  • The variations of real time electric price in competitive electricity markets have influence on electric power demands of the consumers. Residential, commercial, and industrial consumers, with different characteristics cause the different price elasticity of the demand due to changing the pattern of consumption. Therefore, this paper calculate the elasticity of each loads and analysis the effects of electric power demands and spot pricing as a function of elasticity in competitive electricity market.

Sustainable Buildings - or Sustainable Cities?

  • China's rapidly growing cities offer a unique opportunity to create highly sustainable communities. Architects and their clients, typically real estate developers, are highly focused on strategies that are effective at reducing energy and water usage at the scale of the individual building or within a master plan of multiple related buildings. However, a closer look at energy consumption reveals that transportation uses more energy worldwide than residential and commercial buildings combined. In light of this, it is appropriate that China is making massive investments in transportation infrastructure like heavy rail rapid transit and grade separated expressways, but the end result of these investments to date has been to enable people to live further from where they work and shop rather than closer - while simultaneously not creating walkable communities. Using positive and negative examples from Asia and the rest of the world, this article will investigate the specific urban design policies such as height limits, setbacks, land use restrictions, parking ratios, and parcel size which might change to enable the creation of truly sustainable communities for China's 21st century.

A "Fabric-First" Approach to Sustainable Tall Building Design

  • This research suggests the most effective way for improving energy efficiency in tall buildings is a "fabric-first" approach. This involves optimizing the performance of the building form and envelope as a first priority, with additional technologies a secondary consideration. The paper explores a specific fabric-first energy standard known as "Passivhaus". Buildings that meet this standard typically use 75% less heating and cooling. The results show tall buildings have an intrinsic advantage in achieving Passivhaus performance, as compared to low-rise buildings, due to their compact form, minimizing heat loss. This means high-rises can meet Passivhaus energy standards with double-glazing and moderate levels of insulation, as compared to other typologies where triple-glazing and super-insulation are commonplace. However, the author also suggests that designers need to develop strategies to minimize overheating in Passivhaus high-rises, and reduce the quantity of glazing typical in high-rise residential buildings, to improve their energy efficiency.

  • Recently residential buildings are characterized with high-rise and high density. Under this circumstance, achieving comfortable and healthy indoor environment with minimized energy consumption becomes a very challenging engineering and societal issue. Along this the increased size and transparency of window as well as light surface caused by high stories lowers the heat shield efficiency of building. Since glass that constitutes building surface has low heat efficiency, it aggravates heat loss of all building considerably, thereby resulting in extreme heating load and cooling load in the country where temperature varies much in summer and winter. The research will check whether experiment can be effectively done by overcoming the limit of existing artificial solar laboratory constructed in the country and properly adjusting controlled variables with simplified function through construction of this experimental set.

공단지역에서의 휘발성유기화합물의 농도 평가 (Evaluation of VOCs in Kumi industrial Complex)

  • Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) contribute to the formation of ozone and PAN which are injurious to health through complex photochemical reactions. Growing consumption of fossil fuels results in significant emission of VOCs and other air pollutants into the atmosphere. This study was carried out to evaluate of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) concentrations in Kumi industrial complex. Ambient air sampling was determined at five sites from August to September in 2002. The Volatile Organic Compounds samples were collected using the silicocan canisters, and were determined by GC/MS which connected preconcentrator system. The Kumi industrial complex of VOCs concentrations were generally similar with Yeochun's but some of VOCs concentrations of Kumi were higher than Yeochun industrial complex's. Also the industrial area was higher than downtown and residential district.

汚濁河川水의 地球化學的인 硏究(第 III 報) 서울市內 河川水의 브롬舍量 (Geochemical Investigation in Contaminated River Waters(Part III) Bromine Contents of River Water in Seoul)

  • Halogen contents of the river water of Seoul city and of municipal reservoirs were investigated from June in 1969 to February in 1970. Bromine contents were ranging from 0.006 to 0.048 mg/1 of the reservoirs, 0.021 to 0.048 mg/1 of Han River, 0.051 to 0.540 mg/1 of rivers running through residential areas and 0.083 to 0.920 mg/1 of rivers running through industrial areas. Bromine contents increased as the river water became contaminated. Most of Br/Cl of Han River and the reservoirs were higher than $3.4{\times}10^{-3}$ of sea water. Bromine contents at 17 different places were the largest in November. The contents of chlorine, iodine and COD (chemical oxygen demand) were nearly correlated with that of bromine. Bromine contents of the river waters in Seoul chiefly originated from consumption of domestic and industrial salt.

  • One of the problems in using renewable energy sources is great difficulty of stable and sustainable supply. Because the fuel cell can provide stable and sustainable supply of energy sources without regard to external conditions, however, it will become one of the most useful renewable energy sources for buildings that need stable energy supply. For practical application of PEMFC system to common household, the data of household energy consumption are analyzed by electricity, cooking and heating. From the result of the data analysis, practical application methods of PEMFC system to household are designed to several models. The aim of this study is to establish a plan of practical application for applying Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) system to the households.

  • The variations of real time electric power price in competitive electricity markets have influence on electric power demands of the consumers. The effects of the consumers for electric power price can be expressed the price elasticity coefficient of the power demand as a measurement. Residential, commercial, and industrial consumers with different characteristics cause the different price elasticity of the power demand due to changing the pattern of consumption. It is necessary that the effects of electric power demands as a function of elasticity coefficient for each loads should be analyzed in Korea which is processing deregulated electric market. Therefore, this paper calculate the elasticity coefficient of each loads and analysis the effects of electric power demands as a function of elasticity coefficient of inflexible and flexible consumers in competitive electricity market.

사회복지시설 아동의 신체발육 및 영양상태 (Anthropometric and Nutrition Status of Institutional Children)

  • This study was designed to investigate the malnutrition rate with anthropometric indices for the nutrient intake of 74 children aged 4-12 years old in three child welfare institutions in Cheonan city. The average heights and weights of the children are much lower than the Korean average height and weight. The mean BMI is $17.0{\pm}1.53$. In terms of height-for-age, 16.0% of the samples belong to below -2 standard deviation from the mean of the reference group. In terms of weight-for-age, 16.0% of the children belong to below -2 standard deviation. In terms of weight-for-height, 4.0% of the children belong to below -2 standard deviation. The standard deviation scores(Wt/Age, Ht/Age) indicate negative signs for seventy to eighty percent of the children. This is due to the lower consumption of the important nutrients that children consumed and almost all nutrients much less than the recommended daily allowances. Special nutrition welfare policies and programs targcting child welfare institutions should be developed to provide adequate nutrition for children in residential care.

  • The economy of I.R.Iran is so related to oil that has had many environmental problems especially air pollution in urban areas in recent years. Statistics show that most of the time, the condition of air quality is in crisis level especially during fall and winter seasons. Rapid and high population growth has had large amount of fossil fuels consumption in all sectors including transportation, industry, agriculture, residential and commercial and public services and air pollution and healthy problems. Iran's abundance of fossil fuel resources has tended to discourage the country's incentive to shift to cleaner alternative energy sources for its energy needs that must be considered in future programming. These are discussed in this paper.
