A Basic Study on Implementing Optimal Function of Motion Sensor for Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

  • A Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (hereafter 'BNWAS') is to monitor and detect if an officer of watch(hereafter 'OOW') keeps a sharp lookout on the bridge. The careless lookout of an OOW could lead to marine accidents. For this reason on June 5th, 2009, IMO decided that a ship is equipped with a BNWAS. However, an existing BNWAS gives the OOW a lot of inconvenience and stress in its operation. It requires that the OOW should press reset buttons to confirm their alert watch on the bridge at every three to twelve minute. Many OOWs have complained that at some circumstances they cannot focus on their bridge activities including watch-keeping due to a lots of resetting inputs of BNWAS. Accordingly, IMO has allowed the use of a motion sensor as a resetting device. The motion sensor detects the movements of human body on the bridge and subsequently sends reset signals directly to BNWAS automatically. As a result, OOWs can work uninterrupted. However, some of classification societies and flag authorities have a slightly different stance on the use of motion sensor as a resetting method for BNWAS. The reason is that the motion sensor may trigger false reset signals caused by the motion of objects on the bridge, especially a slight movement such as toss and turn of human body which can extend the period of careless watch. As a basic study to minimize the false reset signals, this paper proposes a simple configuration of BNWAS, which consists of only three motion sensors associated with 'AND' and 'OR' logic gates. Additionally, several considerations are also proposed for the implementation of motion sensors. This study found that the proposed configuration which consists of three motion sensors is better than an existing one by reducing false reset signals caused by a slight movement of human body in one's sleep. The proposed configuration in this paper filters false reset signals and is simple to be implemented on existing vessels. In addition, it can be easily installed just by a basic electrical knowledge.

저전력 고에너지 효율 열전에너지 하베스팅을 위한 자가 리셋 기능을 갖는 영점 전류 스위칭 회로 설계 (Self-Reset Zero-Current Switching Circuit for Low-Power and Energy-Efficient Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting)

  • 본 논문에서는 열전에너지 하베스팅을 위한 자가 리셋(self-reset) 기능을 갖는 영점 전류 스위칭(Zero-Current Switching) 회로를 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 영점 전류 스위칭 회로는 전압비교기 회로에 자가 리셋 기능을 추가하여 전압비교기의 동작전류를 최소화함으로써 에너지 하베스팅 회로의 전력 소비를 줄이고 에너지 변환 효율을 향상시킬 수 있게 한다. 회로 시뮬레이션으로 본 논문에서 제안하는 영전 전류 스위칭 회로의 동작을 검증하고 성능을 평가한 결과, 열전에너지 하베스팅 회로의 출력전압-입력전압 비가 5.5 일 때, 기존의 영점 전류 스위칭 회로를 이용한 하베스팅 회로와의 비교를 통해서 본 논문의 하베스팅 회로의 전력효율이 3.4% 개선되는 것으로 평가된다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 영점 전류 스위칭 회로는 열전에너지 하베스팅의 응용 중에서 특히 저전력과 고에너지 효율 특성이 중요한 웨어러블, 바이오 헬스 관련된 하베스팅 회로의 성능 개선에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

인버터시스템 적용 지역난방 시스템의 2차측 공급수 온도 제어방안에 따른 에너지사용량 실증 비교 (Actual Energy Consumption Analysis of Temperature Control Strategies for Secondary Side Hot Water District Heating System with an Inverter)

  • In this study, the actual energy consumption of the secondary side District Heating System (DHS) with different hot water supply temperature control methods is compared. The two methods are Outdoor Temperature Reset Control and Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. While Outdoor Temperature Reset Control has been widely used for energy savings of the secondary side system, the results show that the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method saves more energy. In general, the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method lowers the supply temperature of hot water, and it reduces standby losses and increases the overall heat transfer value of heated spaces due to more flow into the space. During actual energy consumption monitoring, the Outdoor Temperature predictive Control method saves about 6.6% of energy when compared to the Outdoor Temperature Reset Control method. Also, it is found that at partial load condition, such as during daytime, the fluctuation of hot water supply temperature with Outdoor Temperature Reset Control is more severe than that with Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. Thus, it proves that Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control is more stable even at partial load conditions.

AC PDP에서의 대폭소거방식을 이용한 선택적 초기화 파형 (Selective Reset Waveform using Wide Square Erase Pulse in an ac PDP)

  • In this paper, we propose a newly developed selective reset waveform of a ac PDP using the wide erase pulse technique with the control of address bias voltage. Although it is generally understood that the wide pulse erasing methode shows the narrow driving margin in an opposite discharge type ac PDP, we could obtain a moderate driving margin in a 3-electrode surface discharge type ac PDP. The obtained driving margin shows a strong dependency on the sustain voltage and the address bias voltage. The lower the sustain and the address bias voltage, the wider the driving margin. The pulse width of the proposed waveform is only $10{\mu}s$, which gives additional time to the sustain period, hence increases the brightness. The brightness and contrast ratio increase about 20% together comparing to the conventional ramp type selective reset waveform with the driving scheme of 10 subfield ADS method. The driving margin was measured with the line by line addressed pattern on the white test panel of 2inch diagonal size and the discharge gas was Ne+Xe4%, 400torr.

Current-to-Voltage Converter Using Current-Mode Multiple Reset and its Application to Photometric Sensors

  • Using a current-mode multiple reset, a current-to-voltage(I-V) converter with a wide dynamic range was produced. The converter consists of a trans-impedance amplifier(TIA), an analog-to-digital converter(ADC), and an N-bit counter. The digital output of the I-V converter is composed of higher N bits and lower bits, obtained from the N-bit counter and the ADC, respectively. For an input current that has departed from the linear region of the TIA, the counter increases its digital output, this determines a reset current which is subtracted from the input current of the I-V converter. This current-mode reset is repeated until the input current of the TIA lies in the linear region. This I-V converter is realized using 0.35 ${\mu}m$ LSI technology. It is shown that the proposed I-V converter can increase the maximum input current by a factor of $2^N$ and widen the dynamic range by $6^N$. Additionally, the I-V converter is successfully applied to a photometric sensor.

중앙 냉방시스템에 대한 외기보상제어의 절약 성능에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Energy Saving Performance of Outdoor Temperature Reset Control Strategy for Central Cooling System)

  • In this study, energy saving performance of outdoor temperature reset control strategy for central cooling system is researched by experiments. Outdoor temperature reset control is the control method to change indoor air set temperature according to outdoor air temperature change. The range of indoor air set temperature is represented by the comfort temperature range of indoor air temperature offered from ASHRAE and indoor air set temperature is programmed between $22^{\circ}C$ and $27^{\circ}C$ by outdoor air temperature $20^{\circ}C{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ in summer. As a result of applying outdoor temperature reset control to central cooling system, the suggested control method shows better performances of energy savings than the conventional method which indoor temperature maintains constantly.

The 2-dimensional Discharge Cell Simulation for the Analysis of the Peset and Addressing of an Alternating Current Plasma Display Panel

  • The characteristics of the reset and the address discharges of an alternating current Plasma Display Panel (ac PDP) were studied using 2-dimensional numerical discharge cell simulation. We investigated the wall charge variations during the reset discharge adopting ramping reset pulse and the subsequent addressing discharge. The roles of the ramping reset scheme can be divided into two stages, each electrode gathers wall charges during ramping-up of the initial stage and the built-up wall charges are lost during ramping-down of the later stage. Address discharge does not only change the wall charge distributions on the address and the scan electrodes but also on the sustain electrode. The increase in the wall charges on the sustain electrode was observed with the variation of the applied voltage to the sustain electrode during the address period. The increase of the applied voltage to the sustain electrode during the address period is expected to induce the decrease of the sustain voltage during the display period.

A Mixed SOC Estimation Algorithm with High Accuracy in Various Driving Patterns of EVs

  • In this paper, a mixed algorithm is proposed to overcome the limitations of the conventional algorithms, which cannot be applied in various driving patterns of drivers. The proposed algorithm based on the coulomb counting method is mixed with reset algorithms that consist of the enhanced OCV reset method and the DCIR iterative calculation method. It has many advantages, such as a simple model structure, low computational overload in various profiles, and a low accumulated SOC error through the frequent SOC reset. In addition, the enhanced parameter based on a mathematical analysis of the second-order RC ladder model is calculated and is then applied to all of the methods. The proposed algorithm is verified by experimental results based on a 27-Ah LiPB. It is observed that the SOC RMSE of the proposed algorithm decreases by about 9.16% compared to the coulomb counting method.

  • In this paper, we present a 2-Dimensional simulation model of the discharge in an ac plasma display panel cell. Therefore, we study a ramp reset waveform in an ac plasma display panel discharge cell using 2-Dimensional simulation. Finally We research a connection between priming particles' density and stability.

Characteristic of a Negative Driving Waveform in ac PDPs

  • A negative waveform was studied to improve the driving characteristics of reset and address periods in ac PDP. Comparative experiments between negative and conventional positive waveforms were performed with 42-inch XGA PDP module. The negative waveform showed lower breakdown voltage than the conventional positive waveform in reset period. Due to its weak and stable discharge during reset period, the contrast ratio was improved by decreasing the black luminance. During address period, the discharge time-lag was measured. The formative time lag ($=T_f$) of negative waveform was improved about 22.8% than $T_f$ of conventional positive waveform.
