  • A new WDM-based protocol for scheduling a variable-length message is proposed in this paper. Two control slots, Pre-reservation slot and Reservation Slot, are used to coordinate transmission and diminish the collisions of packet to minimize the access delay. When there is an idle reservation slot, a control packet is transmitted on that slot and message is transferred. And the node continues to transmit its control packet through the corresponding slot every cycle, until the message is completely transmitted. If an idle reservation slot is not available, the node schedules the transmission time of message in earliest available time using Pre-reservation slots. The proposed scheduling protocol has several advantages; any new node can join the network anytime without network re-initialization. Moreover, with the pre-reservation slots, we can avoid the packet collisions and destination conflicts, and we can improve the access delay time for message transmissions.

  • Broadband code division multiple access(B-CDMA)previously proposed for personal communication services(PCS) is not suitable for high-speed data services with large variations in speed, because it is designed only for low-speed voice calls with small variations in speed. Meanwhile, hybrid intra-cell TDMA/inter-cell CDMA(Hybrid TDMA/CDMA) recently proposed could accomodate high-speed services easily because of its internal use of the TDMA scheme, but there would be much inefficiency in treating variable bit rate services due to the intrinsic properties of TDMA transmission scheme, In this paper, a media access control(MAC) protocol, called Resevation TDMA/CDMA, which uses a reservation scheme similar to the one in the packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) protocol to compensate for these shortcomings is proposed. In addition, the performance of this protocol is analyzed and compared with conventional protocols by computer simulation. According to the simulation results, it has been shown that the proposed Reservation TDMA/CDMA scheme could support various transmission rates of user data traffics easily, and it could utilize the variations of the treansmission rates in each active call more efficiently.

  • In this paper, a contention-based reservation MAC protocol is proposed for non-real-time bursty traffic services in the wireless ATM networks. In order to reduce the collisions of the reservation request packets, the base station scheduler calculates the transmission probability using the number of RAS minislots and the estimated load of the reservation request packets. And it broadcasts the calculated transmission probability through the downlink control channel. Mobile terminals, which have a traffic burst, select randomly a RAS minislot and transmit the reservation request packet with the received transmission probability. The reservation request packet contains the number of packets in the buffer. The base station allocates slots based on the buffer status of the received reservation request packets.

  • In this paper, we propose a signaling protocol which can support QoS for multimedia applications continuously after handover of a mobile node in the network environment where IP-based wireless access networks co-exist. Since existing RSVP-based signaling protocols can cause the waste of network resources due to double reservation and do not provide fast resource reservation/release, they are not suitable for mobile networks. The proposed QoS signaling protocol can support QoS for multimedia applications using the fast reservation of necessary resources after handover and avoid the waste of resources by resolving the double reservation problem. This paper presents design and implementation architectures of the proposed signaling protocol and analyzes its performance via a physical testbed. Based on the analysis results, it was shown that the proposed protocol is able to support seamless QoS for multimedia applications.

  • In this paper the Dynamic Minislot Reservation Protocol(DMRP) in which the control channel is divided into contention-less and contention minislots in order to reduce re-transmission probability in multicasting is proposed. In the network, earth node has two pairs of transceivers. A transceiver consisting of a fixed transmitter and a fixed receiver is used to control packet registration and the other transceiver is used to transmit data. Two types f transceivers for data transmission are considered : one is FT-TR(Fixed Transmitter-Tunable Receiver) and the other is TT-TR(Tunable Transmitter-Tunable Receiver). In the analysis, FT-TR and TT-TR single-hop passive star networks are compared. As results, we conclude that the DMRP protocol with dynamically divided control channel has improved the system performance such as throughput and system delay regardless of traffic type or network structure.

  • Recently, there ary many researches on local area multichannel network as WDM technology developes. An ideal media access protocol in a multichannel network is one that shows short access delay under low load and high throughput under heavy load. This paper proposed a new media access protocol for WDM passive star coupler network. The proposed one is a random access rpotocol based on reservation. Access delay is short under low load by using random access method, and high throughput is achieved under heavy load by usin greservation access. Analytic model for the performance analysis of the proposed protocol is developed and performance of the proposed protocol is compared with the previous ones. The effect on the performance of the number of the nodes and channels, and the number of transceivers in each node are analyzed.

  • This paper proposes a novel exposed-terminal-eliminated medium access control (ETE-MAC) protocol by combining channel reservation, collision avoidance and concurrent transmissions to improve multi-access performance of the multihop wireless networks. Based on the proposed slot scheduling scheme, each node senses the control channel (CCH) or the data channel (DCH) to accurately determine whether it can send or receive the corresponding packets without collisions. Slot reservation on the CCH can be simultaneously executed with data packet transmissions on the DCH. Therefore, it resolves the hidden-terminal type and the exposed-terminal type problems efficiently, and obtains more spatial reuse of channel resources. Concurrent packet transmissions without extra network overheads are maximized. An analytical model combining Markov model and M/G/1 queuing theory is proposed to analyze its performance. The performance comparison between analysis and simulation shows that the analytical model is highly accurate. Finally, simulation results show that, the proposed protocol obviously outperforms the link-directionality-based dual-channel MAC protocol (DCP) and WiFlex in terms of the network throughput and the average packet delay.

  • In this paper, we proposed an efficient medium access protocol to share single transmission medium for several stations. There are two well known types of medium access protocols: collision allowance and collision avoidance, and each of them is adopted to their own suitable network with advantage. Our proposed protocol have channel reservation facility based on collision allow medium access protocol, CSMA/CD. In a collision, the stations delay collision with generating pseudo collision signal to reserve channel. Then, the collision terminates and the stations, which reserve channel successfully, participate the next competition with higher medium access probability. We show that the proposed protocol reduced collision times and improved utilization of the channel.

  • The voice traffic is one of the most important real-time objects in WATM(Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks. In this paper, we propose a new MAC(Medium Access'Control) protocol for the efficienttransmission of voice traffic over WATM networks in the multimedia environment and compare the performanceto existing similar protocols. The new protocol separates the reservation slot period for voice and that for data toguarantee some level of QoS(Quality of Service) in voice traffic. This is denoted by a slot assignment functiondepending on the frame size. According to the characteristics of voice traffic which is repeatedly in silent states, the protocol allocates voice reservation request slots dynamically with respect to the number of silent(off state)voice sources and also sends the first block of talkspurt restarted after silent period with a reservation requestslot to reduce the access delay. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol has better performance than Slotted Aloha in bandwidthefficiency, and can serve a certain level of QoS by the given slot assignment function even when the number ofvoice terminals varies dynamically. This means we can observe that the new MAC protocol is much better thanthe NC-PRMA(None Collision-Packet Reservation Multiple Access) protocol.

  • Underwater acoustic sensor networks can be used disaster prevention and environmental monitoring systems in underwater environments. Because, the underwater environment is different from the ground, the long propagation delay, low transfer rates and limited bandwidth characteristics should be considered. In this, paper will propose the MAC protocol that allocates time slot into each node according to priority policy through the period of contention-free slot reservation in underwater acoustic sensor networks in order to avoid collision and minimize energy consumption waste. We perform mathematical analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol with regard to the collision probability, the energy consumption by collision, throughput and channel utilization. We compare the proposed protocol with the conventional protocol, and the performance results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the conventional protocol.
