국내 치위생학 교과목 운영실태 및 미국 치위생학교육 인정평가 기준과의 비교연구 (The implement status of dental hygiene curriculum in Korea and the comparison with the US ADA standard)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the improvement basis for Dental Hygiene education program by analyzing the current implement status of Dental Hygiene curriculum in Korea and comparing the status with the US ADA standard. The researcher analyzed the Dental Hygiene syllabus limiting "Dental prophxis", "Comprehensive dental hygiene" subjects only from 31 universities which offer 3 years program. The main interest was to figure the implementing status of the curriculum and to compare the actual teaching content with the CODA 2-17 standard. The results show that there are a number of problems in implementing the Dental Hygiene courses among different universities. First, there is a significant inconsistence among schools in terms of course title, total credit, hours, the ratio for theory and practice, etc. In addition, there is a big gap between the actual content of Dental Hygiene courses and the essential/required content of CODA 2-17 standard. For instance, most of the Dental Hygiene programs in Korea cover the overall assessment stage content and some of implementation stage content. However, very few programs deal with the planning and evaluation stage content. To improve these problematic circumstance a number of suggestions were made. Developing the standardized curriculum for the Dental Hygiene program might be one of the major solutions. Next, the regular accreditation and/or assessment system for the Dental Hygiene program should be developed. This research can provide the basis for the need to assess and improve the Dental Hygiene curriculum.

치위생(학)과 학생의 전공만족도, 치위생전문직관이 진로준비행동에 미치는 영향 (The effects of satisfaction with major, and dental hygiene professionalism on career preparation behavior of dental hygiene students)

  • Objectives: This study was attempted in order to understand about the satisfaction with major and the dental hygiene professionalism in dental hygiene students and to grasp the factors affecting the career preparation behavior. Methods: The research subjects included 264 juniors and seniors who are attending dental hygiene department across Korea (three locations in Gyeonggi province, one locations in Daejeon, four locations in Jeolla province, and one locations in Daegu). Data were collected using the online questionnaire between March 6 to April 7, 2023. The chosen data analysis method included descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple linear regression. Results: The following average scores were obtained from those surveyed: 3.25 points concerning career preparation behavior, 3.83 points concerning the respondent's satisfaction with their major, and 3.45 points concerning dental hygiene professionalism. As for a difference in career preparation behavior according to general characteristics, a meaningful difference was shown in terms of gender, motivation for entering the field, and first desired employment. Aspects of career preparation behavior, satisfaction with one's major, and dental hygiene professionalism showed a significant correlation and were confirmed to explain the prediction of 29.1% of the variation in the regression model. Conclusions: For the sake of having an integrated understanding about career preparation behavior among dental hygiene students, there is a need to conduct repeated research on diverse variables and to inquire into a causal relationships between such variables.

치과병·의원에 근무하는 치과위생사의 업무 범위에 대한 질적 연구 (A qualitative research on work scope in dental healthcare hygienists)

  • Objectives: This qualitative research was conducted to clearly find and clinically understand dental hygienists' work experience in order to lay the legal foundation for their work range and safe execution. Methods: From March 1 to April 30, 2019, seven study participants were selected and participated in-depth interviews. Phenomenological research methodology was applied for intensive analysis. Results: They performed jobs that required no professionalism, such as dental assistance, except for scaling. Dental hygienists, nurses' aids, and dental technicians performed the same jobs regardless of difficulty level and legal work range. Dental hygienists failed to accurately recognize their legal work range. Since there was the wide gap between their legal work range and actual work range, it was necessary to expand the work range in line with actual conditions. Conclusions: Given the results, it is necessary to conduct in-depth discussions within the dental circle to make dental hygienists' work execution in line with reality by improving and discussing a legal system for job assignment and expansion of workers. Therefore, it is required to form a plan for the many jobs dental hygienists executed in a clinical setting.

국내 치위생(학)과 개설 현황 및 치과위생사의 활동 실태 (Current status of dental hygiene educational institutions and dental hygienists' employment in Korea)

  • Objectives: Dental hygienists are an essential human resource in dental service organizations. However, there are several important persisting problems faced by them, that need to be solved. The purpose of this study was to explore the current situation in dental hygiene education institutions, number of active dental hygienists, and employment distribution across South Korea. Methods: The study gathered statistics of dental hygiene educational institutions, the ratio of active dental hygienists and the number of dental hygienists working across South Korea from officially reviewed websites. Results: Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions house the most number of colleges with dental hygiene programs. The Daejeon and Chungnam regions had the most universities with dental hygiene programs. The activity ratio of dental hygienists decreased every year. Dental hygienists' employment was highly focused in the Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces. Conclusions: The survey data can be used as basic data for future dental hygienist education to cope with the shortage of active dental hygienists and regional imbalances. This could prove useful to consider the employment of dental hygienists appropriately.

The Influence of Dental Hygiene Student's Communication Ability and Conflict Management Types on Adaptation to College Life

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dental hygiene students' communication ability and conflict management types on adaptation to college life improve adaptation to college life and to suggest strategies to play a role as a professional dental hygienist in clinical practice. Methods: The subjects of this study were selected by random sample extraction of dental hygiene students from two colleges in Gyeonggi and one Chungcheong area. The survey was conducted online for dental hygiene students from July 20 to October 31, 2020. In order to comply with research ethics, this study was investigated with the consent of the subjects. The sample was analyzed for the final 351. Results: Dental hygiene students' communication ability was 3.74 points, conflict management types was 3.01 points, and adaptation to college life was 3.30 points. In the type of conflict management according to the general characteristics, the problem-solving method, the avoidance method, the compromise method, and the concession method showed statistically significant differences in major satisfaction. Among the types of conflict management, the highest positive correlation (r=0.613) was shown in the relationship between the problem-solving method and the compromise method. Factors influencing the adaptation to college life were concentration, forced method, self-disclosure, conversational coherence, and social relaxation. Conclusion: This study is significant in that it derives sub-areas of communication ability and conflict management types that influence adaptation to college life. In the future, there is a need to improve the quality of dental hygienists by continuously conducting research on the types of conflict management targeting dental hygienists, and responding more proactively and actively to conflict situations in the clinical field.

임상치과 영역 교과목 분석을 통한 통합교육과정에 대한 고찰 : 한국, 일본 일부 치위생학과 사례를 중심으로 (Analysis of a clinical dentistry course to study the need for integrated curriculum : in the case of dental hygiene department in Korea and Japan)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical dentistry curriculum in Korea and Japan in order to review the application of integrated curriculum in the field. We collected the clinical dentistry syllabi for 2015-16 of the department of dental hygiene of Korea G University and Japan N University. Using the data from Korea, items that were duplicated and integrated were classified by the subjects covered in clinical dentistry. In addition, through case studies conducted in Korea and Japan, we analyzed and compared the credits, class hours, teaching methods, and evaluation methods, by subject. In Korea the total class hours in clinical dentistry, including clinical practice, was 1,095, and in Japan it was 1,104. In Korea, the syllabus covered by each department consisted of about 200 hours centering on theoretical lectures. In Japan, the integrated form of clinical dentistry was taught, and the instructions included all the contents of clinical dental study and also problem-based learning for approximately 100 hours. To strengthen the competence of dental hygienists as professionals, who are actively involved in dental practice, it is necessary to integrate the education contents of segmented clinical dentistry from the perspective of dental hygiene. It is also important to apply teaching methods that can help students improve their ability to solve problems.

치위생과 재학생의 전공학과에 대한 태도 및 만족도 조사 (A study on attitude and satisfaction of the students in department of dental hygiene)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to research attitude and satisfaction of the students in the department of dental hygiene in Jeolla-do and Chungcheong-do. Methods : We surveyed 499 students at the department of dental hygiene at colleges. During the period from October 2 to October 30, 2009 using a self-administered questionnaires. The data were analyzed with chi-square, t-test and one-way ANOVA, person correlation coefficients and multiple regression using the SPSS 13.0 program. Results : As for entrance motive with Dental Hygiene, 63.9% of the employment and selection information was 36.3% by oneself. As for pre-knowledge before entrance about dental hygiene by grade(p<0.01), as for satisfaction in the department dental hygiene by regional groups(p<0.05), as for aptitude suitability by educational system(p<0.05), as for encourage of enter school by grade and regional groups(p<0.05), by educational system(p<0.01) were statistically significant. As for encourage of enter school, aptitude suitability, pre-knowledge before entrance about dental hygiene were positive relation to satisfaction in the department dental hygiene. Multiple regression analysis indicated with explanatory power of 30.8% about satisfaction in the department dental hygiene. Conclusions : This study reports that it is necessary to carry out further studies on the various educational process and development of program in college. Dental hygiene education for the whole man and for promote efficiency in the department of dental hygiene, should be positive information activity via various media get the correct information of a department choice.

치위생 과정(Dental hygiene process of care)에 대한 치과의사의 인식조사 (A Study of Dentist's Perception of the Dental Hygiene Process of Care)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to conduct an in-depth interview with dentists in order to provide fundamental data regarding their thoughts in relation to the dental hygiene process of care and its necessity in clinical practice, with the aim of ensuring that dental hygienists can perform their duties as experts. Method : Following explanation of the study, we administered the questionnaire to those who agreed to participate between September 26 and October 28, 2017. A Naver-form (mobile) questionnaire was distributed to the research subjects for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 24.0. Analysis was performed by calculating the frequency and percentage of the general characteristics of the subjects, occupational expertise, and the dental hygiene process of care. Result : Among the 56 research subjects, 48 (85.7 %) were men and 8 (14.3 %) were women. Awareness on the part of respondents of the job responsibilities associated with the dental hygiene process of care ratio was as follows: 11 (19.6 %) categorized their level of knowledge regarding the dental hygienist's job duties as "very much know"; 13 (23.2 %) as "somewhat know"; 18 (32.1 %) as "neither"; and 9 (16.1 %) as "somewhat don't know", while 5 (9.0 %) said "I have no idea". The dental hygiene process of care was categorized as "very much necessary" by 50.0 % of respondents; as "somewhat necessary" by 35.7 %; and as "neither" by 14.3 %. Conclusion : The dental hygiene process of care is one of the methods used to continuously manage patients with dental-related concerns. Recently, the management of patients in the dental clinic has changed from a disease treatment model to a concept of active prevention for improving the quality of life related to oral health. The dental hygiene process of care is considered a very necessary dental health care service because it functions to continuously introduce oral health care or preventive care programs in clinical practice.

임상치위생학에서 문제중심학습(Problem-Based Learning)의 모듈 개발 및 평가 (Development and evaluation of problem-based learning module in clinical dental hygiene)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구의 목적은 문제중심학습(Problem-Based Learning) 수업 모듈을 개발하여 임상치위생학 수업에 적용함으로써 문제중심학습을 운영하는 것에 대한 학습자의 만족도와 치위생학의 역량 수준, 성찰일지를 통한 학습자 의견을 평가하는 것이다. 연구방법: 본 연구는 2020년 2학기에 수행되었고, 연구대상은 4학년 2학기 과정의 임상치위생학(특수환자구강건강관리) 교과목 수강생 31명이었다. 개발된 PBL 학습모듈을 15주간 수업에 적용하였고, 모든 PBL 수업이 종료된 후 수업에 대한 전반적인 만족도, 학생 역량 수준의 변화를 평가하였다. 연구결과: PBL 수업에 대한 학습자의 만족도는 전반적으로 높았고, 자가역량 수준도 수업 전에 비하여 증가하였다. 더불어, PBL 학습활동 후 성찰일지를 통해 상위주제 3개는 PBL 학습을 통해 얻은 역량, PBL 학습을 통해 배운 인문사회학적 요소, PBL 학습에서의 장애 요인이 도출되었다. 결론: 본 연구에서 개발된 PBL 학습모듈은 학생들이 문제를 파악하여 통합적으로 해결할 수 있는 역량뿐만 아니라 인문사회학적 역량 제고를 견인할 수 있는 수업이라는 것을 확인하였다.
