As for the research subjects and methods, 233 dental hygienists who work at the dental clinics located in Daegu, Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam were targeted from February 6, 2012 to March 5, 2012 to administer survey by utilizing patient safety culture recognition tool. Collected data was subjected to the SPSS 18.0 program to calculate average and standard deviation, and to carry out t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Dental hygienists' level of perception towards patient safety culture was mid level, and it was demonstrated that there is a correlation with age, work experience at department, title and type of department that affect level of perception towards patient safety culture. In conclusion, Since this research targeted only a limited number of dental hygienists, it is necessary to be cautious about over-interpreting the results. Above anything, it is necessary to carry out repetitive research by targeting medical professionals of diverse jobs.

  • A recent rapid change in society drives the colleges and universities into the unlimited competition for satisfying users' demand. The introduction of customized educational system is one of the survival strategies of university that reflected this characteristic. The result of a research on the customized curriculum of the dental hygiene study shows that the managers of dental hospitals and clinics think that the dental assistance field is dental hygienist's major task. On the other hand, though the dental hygienists think that the oral health education is the main task, they just comply with the intention of managers of the dental hospitals and clinics in reality. Hence, the reinforcement of the practicum in the industry field is required to meet the demand from the industry. And there is also a need to offer an opportunity of self-realization through work life by allowing dental hygienists to have stable status within dental hospitals and clinics with enhanced education and training on preventive dental treatment and oral health.

  • Background: To promote and maintain oral health among adults, the relationship between oral health and obesity was examined, and the effects of oral health on obesity were investigated. Methods: A total of 4,270 Korean adults aged ≥20 years were selected as study subjects using raw data from the first year (2019) of the eighth period of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Complex sample Rao-Scott chi-square test and complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed using PASW Statistics ver. 18.0. Results: The prevalence of abdominal obesity was 1.3 times higher subjects with poor oral health than in those with good perceived oral health and 1.3 times higher in subjects who did not receive dental checkups compared to those that did. The frequency of brushing of teeth was 1.2 times higher for subjects who reported brushing 2~3 times per day compared to those who reported brushing four or more times per day. The risk of being overweight was 1.3 times higher in subjects with one or more dental implants than in those with none. Conclusion: To build an integrated health program, it is thought that a preventive approach through self and expert oral health care, considering the age-specific characteristics of adults, is necessary for the intervention process used to build customized obesity prevention projects at the national level.

  • This research is to identify the status of the curriculum based on dental hygiene programs, the awareness about medical service technologists, etc. act and job demands of students in the department of dental hygiene. The data was collected by self-reported questionnaires from 536 dental hygiene students. This data was analyzed using SPSS 19.0K program for Windows with a statistical significance level of 0.05. The level of objective awareness of the current Medical Service Technologists Act was higher for females(9.14±1.11) than for males(8.56±1.79)(p=0.043). Meanwhile, there was little difference between college and university(p=0.639), whereas the level dropped as the number of clinical practice experiences went up(p=0.045). Therefore, the law in convergence needs to be revised to reflect the reality of dental hygienists' work, and the dental community needs to change its perception that dental hygienists are not only recognized as assistant workers but also as business partners.
