  • This study is on capacity building and attitude to work of librarians in Edo State public libraries, Nigeria. Investigation was on the capacity building programs in the Edo State public libraries, the levels of librarians' awareness and participation in the programs, methods of building the capacity programs, influence on the librarians' attitudes to work and factors militating against the programs. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the entire population of 23 librarians were used. Results indicate that the capacity building programs in the library include computer literacy skills, online public access catalogue (OPAC), Internet collection management and general trends in librarianship. The methods used in building the capacity programs in the library include conferences, workshops/seminars, on-the-job and internally organized courses. Respondents indicated very low level of participation in the programs and a negative influence of the programs on their attitudes to work. Various problems were identified as militating against the capacity building programs and solutions were suggested.

  • Many studies have been carried out for automatic extraction of building by LiDAR data or airphoto. Combining the benefits of 3D location information data and shape information data of image can improve the accuracy. So, in this research building recognition algorithm based on contour was used to improve accuracy of building recognition by LiDAR data and elaborate building boundary recognition by airphoto. Building recognition algorithm based on contour can generate building boundary and roof structure information. Also it shows better accuracy of building detection than the existing recognition methods based on TIN or NDSM. Out of creating buffers in regular size on the building boundary which is presumed by contour, this research limits the boundary area of airphoto and elaborate building boundary to fit into edge of airphoto by double active contour. From the result of this research, 3D building boundary will be able to be detected by optimal matching on the constant range of extracted boundary in the future.

  • When a severe disaster such as a building collapse occurs, a first priority for rapid rescue is to find a location where people are highly expected to be buried but alive. It is, however, very difficult to correctly designate the location of such cavities by conventional geophysical survey due to a pile of debris of building members. In this study, location of possible lifeguard cavities were evaluated through a series of simulations of building collapse by explosion depending on the height of the building, a structure of basement floor and a location of explosion. Three types of building structure: five-story, ten-story and fifteen-story were prepared as a model for the simulation. As a results, in the case of low building, only basement floor partially collapsed. On the other hand, in the case of high building, a collapsed range on the inside of the building increased and lifeguard spaces were formed only in the lateral side or corner of the building. In addition, when a wall exists in the basement floor, the possibility that cavities could be formed increased compared to the cases without wall. However, for the fifteen-story building case, no possible lifeguard cavity was found. It is noted that for a high rise building, the height of building more affect forming of safeguard cavity than the structure of the basement floor.

  • We propose a new building detection and description algorithm for Lidar data and photogrammetric imagery using color segmentation, line segments matching, perceptual grouping. Our algorithm consists of two steps. In the first step, from the initial building regions extracted from Lidar data and the color segmentation results from the photogrammetric imagery, we extract coarse building boundaries based on the Lidar results with split and merge technique from aerial imagery. In the secondstep, we extract precise building boundaries based on coarse building boundaries and edges from aerial imagery using line segments matching and perceptual grouping. The contribution of this algorithm is that color information in photogrammetric imagery is used to complement collapsed building boundaries obtained by Lidar. Moreover, linearity of the edges and construction of closed roof form are used to reflect the characteristic of man-made object. Experimental results on multisensor data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm produces more accurate and reliable results than Lidar sensor.

  • Purpose: The importance of building airtightness is increased as the demand and expectation of building energy efficiency is growing. Previous research only focused on airtightness of building openings only to improve building airtightness. However, the analysis of difference of airtightness performance according to the characteristic of building structure has not been performed. Therefore, this study analyzed the difference of airtightness performance according to building structural characteristics in a number of ways. Method: Airtightness that are classified as rigid-frame type or wall type are measured and analyzed the difference of airtightness performance between rigid frame type apartments and wall type apartments. This study calculated the heating energy demand and quantitatively analysis using ISO 13790. Futhermore, this study compared research trend of domestic airtightness performance with airtightness standards of the developed countries based on the field measurement. Result: Airtight performance of wall type is better than rigid frame type in terms of energy saving. The difference of heating energy demand between wall type and rigid frame type was $8.14kWh/m^2yr$.

  • The present study has been conducted to simulate dynamics of a gas engine-driven heat pump (GHP) for the design of control algorithm. The dynamic model of a GHP was based on conservation laws of mass and energy. For the control of refrigerant pressures, actuators such as an engine throttle valve, outdoor fans, coolant three-way valves and liquid injection valves were controlled by P or PI algorithm. The simulation results were found to be realistic enough to be applied for the control algorithm design. The model could be applied to build a virtual real-time GHP system so that it interfaces with a real controller for the purpose of developing control algorithm.

  • Architectural market in the world is trying to develop Zero Carbon Buildng that doesn"t use fossil fuel. Residential building that thermal load such as heating and domestic hot water is over 70% in energy consumption is easy to make Zero Carbon Building compared with office building that is mainly electric load. So, As a preliminary for analyzing the effect of Solar thermal system in the building, an annual energy consumption of residential building and total heat loads are calculated. Based on this result, three alternatives of solar thermal system for hot water and heating are applied in the building while installation area is increasing. Solar thermal system is applied on balcony and roof of apartment building as the way to reduce thermal load. In the first case that solar thermal system for hot water is applied on the balcony, optimum installation area is $56m^2$. And you could install $40m^2$ of this system in the roof that angle is $30^{\circ}$. In the second case of solar thermal system for heating and hot water, you can install $40m^2$ on the roof. As a result of economic evaluation, the most economical application method is to install $40m^2$ of solar thermal system for only hot water on the roof of the building. At that time, you can payback the initial investing cost within 10 years. And carbon emission of this method can be reduced until about 4 ton per year.

  • The application of an adhesive calcium carbonate-based hybrid insulation board with quasi-combustibility in the external thermal insulation composite system(ETICS) ensures effective thermal performance and fire safety. This study aimed to conduct a mechanical test of the quasi-non-combustible hybrid insulation board as well as its constituent materials to obtain the basic data for the structural design of the adhesive ETICS. Test specimens were fabricated based on domestic and foreign test standards to examine and evaluate their tensile, compressive, flexural, and shear strengths. The strength characteristics of the quasi-non-combustible hybrid insulation board were identified from the test results, which verified that the minimum required physical properties suggested by the current KS M ISO 4898 were met. Furthermore, the quasi-non-combustible ETICS used in this study was found to be suitable for use as an external insulation system for walls unless subjected to continuous gravity load, such as a heavy exterior finish.
