  • To confirm the genetic identification and phylogenetic relationships of unidentified 6 baleen whales by-caught from 2002 to 2016, a partial sequence of approximately 500 base pair (bp) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region was analyzed and compared to published sequence from Genbank. Our results indicated that the two individuals among 6 specimens are clustered with Omura's whale clade through phylogenetic analysis, which had only a single haplotype. Omura's whale was reclassified as a new species in 2003 and they had not been previously reported in Korean waters. This study firstly revealed existence of Omura's whale in Korean waters by molecular analysis based on mtDNA control region.

  • One specimen of the percophid fish, Pteropsaron evolans Jordan and Snyder and two specimens of the labrid fish, Xyrichtys verrens (Jordan and Evermann) were newly collected from Jeju Island of Korea. P. evolans is characterized by having one pair of spines at snout, cheek without scales, and elongated first dorsal fin in male. X. verrens is easily distinguished by having tip of pectoral fin black, many rows of scales on cheek, and an elongated pelvic fin. We describe as new to Korean fish fauna and propose new Korean names, "Sil-nun-tung-i" for the former and "Jang-mi-ok-du-nol-rae-gi" for the latter.

  • A taxonomic study of Peltigera in South Korea was performed. The phylogenetic analysis based on nr DNA internal transcribed spacer sequences suggests that Peltigera is a well-supported monophyletic group. Important characteristics are the phycobiont type of thallus and the vein type at the lower cortex (wide and flat, or narrow and ridged). The vertical or horizontal arrangement of the apothecia is also important in distinguishing species in this genus. Eleven species of Peltigera were revealed and confirmed, which included one new record, P. elisabethae. A description of each species is presented with morphological, anatomic, and chemical characteristics, and comparisons between similar species are made. A key to the species is also presented.

  • Lichen genus Sarcographa Fee, a stromatoid Graphidacean taxa, was newly found in Geomun Island, Jeonnam province. The lichen grew on the bark of Camellia japonica and Eurya emarginata along the coastal line of the island. It was identified as Sarcographa tricosa (Ach.) Mull. Arg. for the first time in Korea.

  • Three species of Ellobiid molluscs collected from Korea were identified as Auriculastra duplicata (Pfeffer, 1854), Laemodonta siamensis (Morelete, 1875) and Melampus (Pira) flavus (Gmelin, 1791). This is the first record from the Korea, providing a description of the species with illustration for the shell morphology. Including the new recorded in this study, the family Ellobiidae contained six genera and 13 species in the Korea.

  • This work is a report about the first record of alcid species, Thick-billed Murre (Uria lomvia) in Korea. Four individuals of Thick-billed Murre captured by crab net were obtained in Deajin Port and near the Munam Port. three individuals of Thick-billed Murre searching food were observed at an area two miles away from Munam-Port. We describe characters of Thick-billed Murre with illustrations.

  • A taxonomic survey of the dinoflagellate family Prorocentraceae Stein was conducted on 17 locations off the coast of Korea. This monograph is the result of the microscopic analyses. A total of eight species have been identified and described, of which Prorocentrum concavum Fukuyo is new record for Korea.

  • Microturbellarians, small free-living Platyhelminthes are rich in freshwater environments. They are useful as indicator of water quality. There has never been a record of microturbellarians in Korea. Here I report a microturbellarian species, Catenula confusa Nuttycombe, 1956. Although specimens in this study show some differences with those of the original description of C. confusa in length and width of zooid, they conform to the specific diagnosis of this species.

  • One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.
