  • We consider the graph disconnection problem, which is to find a set of edges such that the total cost of destroying the edges is no more than a given budget and the weight of nodes disconnected from a designated source by destroying the edges is maximized. The problem is known to be NP-hard. We present an integer programming formulation for the problem and develop an algorithm that includes a preprocessing procedure for reducing the problem size, a heuristic for providing a lower bound, and a cutting plane algorithm for obtaining an upper bound. Computational results for evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithm are also presented.

  • A flow shop scheduling problem involves scheduling jobs on multiple machines in series in order to optimize a given criterion. The flow time of a job is the amount of time the job spent before its completion and the stretch of the job is the ratio of its flow time to its processing time. In this paper, a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approach is proposed for minimizing the total stretch in flow shop scheduling. HGA adopts the idea of seed selection and development in order to reduce the chance of premature convergence that may cause the loss of search power. The performance of HGA is compared with that of genetic algorithms (GAs).

  • In this study, as a part developing an unmanned container terminal (UCT), Ive designed and implemented an Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV) that can deliver containers in the port fast and safely as they are scheduled. It is preferable to research the intelligent UCT/AGV for delivering containers all day long without causing any trouble. For the sake of safe and fast AGV driving, we implemented a multiple-sensor system with vision, ultrasonic, and IR sensors and we adapted the hight-speed wireless LAN that satisfies the IEEE 802.11 Standard for hi-directional communication between the main processor in AGV and a host computer. The Pentium-III processor board mounted on the bottom frame in AGV combines and computes the information from sensors and controls the AGV driving. There are also the 80C196KC micro-controllers to control the actuating and steering motors. In addition, a steering function that is defined newly in this paper is heavily concerned in the mechanical design, and it plays an important role when AGV moves along a curve. Experimental results show the fast and safe delivery operations are possible with this UCT/AGV

  • This paper relates to develop the human-mobile interface system using saccadic eye movements as an aid to the disabled. EOG(ElectroOculoGraphy) method is used to measure the potentials of rapid eye movements because the method is not expensive and the device is simple. But because the resolution and accuracy of this signal are not good, the algorithm to remove the drifting, using ideal velocity shape, is applied to process the signals. The mobile robot (POSTUR-II) used in this system was developed in Robot & Bio-mechatronics laboratory in POSTECH and has the tele-operation system for the tele-communication with a main computer. Our Research is to help the physically disabled except his eye movements to operate some works with the mobile. Our Results about the system's possibility will be showed by some experimental tests giving the point information to the mobile by eye-gaze.

  • A new architecture of the Digital Scan Converter (DSC) for the linear-scan ultrasound medical imaging systems is proposed and its hardware implementation is reported. While the conventional DSC merely displays the acquisited data and does nor allow access to the frame memory, it is possible, in the new system, to access to the frame memory for further imaging processing so as to obtain useful information for medical diagnosis. Image processing can be performed either by a special pupose processor, or by VAX 11/780. The system is made to operate asyncronously to increase the frame rate with tags assigned to the data. The proposed DSC was designed to be used without much modification for the sector scan system as well.

  • Purpose: Quality management has significantly contributed to the productivity revolution in the past century. However, the argument that quality can be an impediment to innovation in the age of industry 4.0 has intensified recently. Possible solutions to this controversial issue are discussed. Methods: The research papers and magazine articles which described quality as an impediment to innovation are reviewed, and the industries in which this particular problem arises are examined. Results: Conventional quality management is as effective as ever when technology changes quite slowly. However, strong 'quality first' culture serves as an impediment to innovation when technology changes quickly as in the ICT(information and communication technology) industry and platform business. Conclusion: When the technology changes rapidly, faster time-to-market is much more important than variation control and continuous improvement. Moving from a productivity focus to a creativity focus is also required in quality management.

  • Acoustic and pressure type seabed installed wave sensors have advantage in observing long period infra-gravity wave and tsunami, while buoy type wave gauges which measure acceleration of the moored buoy motion are not able to detect long period waves. That's why most of the Japanese coastal wave observation sensors are seabed installed typed ones. Nationwide Japanese coastal wave observation systems with seabed installed sensors are gradually clarifying long-period tsunami profiles and infra-gravity wave characteristics (Nagai.et.al., 1996, 1997,2000,2002a,2002b). • Along with the industry growth, engineering colleges in Korea has have a quantitative growth. Many of the policy promotions and budgets for engineering colleges from the government are supported. And the various monitoring methods to verify their achievement have demanded. This paper deals with the construction of engineering educational statistics system in Korea. It named Korea Engineering Data Management System(K-EDMS). This system is based on the data mining tool and supports data-based decision making for an advanced engineering education service. This paper presents related researches of case studies. Then, we have designed K-EDMS, and constructed 157 cases for engineering colleges of the year 2014.

  • In distance education, use of proper software tools can greatly enhance student's attention and learning efficiency. In such software tools, offering diverse multimedia information is one of the most critical factors. However, integration and synchronization of the various media types has been relatively difficult parts of implementation. This paper proposes a prototype system that uses a metafile and event handling mechanism for the uniform treatment of various media types. This event-level integration and synchronization of multimedia makes the implementation relatively simple. With this approach, instructor's behaviors are automatically recorded, and the instructors can freely choose and show any type of multimedia contents while lecturing. Current commercial or non-commercial lecture management systems could incorporate this approach, so that the distance education market could be expanded with richer multimedia contents.
