  • This paper introduces an empirical modeling technique. This technique uses a set of sample results which are collected from a few small scale simulations. Empirical models are developed by applying a couple of statistical estimation techniques to these samples. We built two types of models for cache miss rates in Symmetric Multiprocessor systems. One is for the changes of input data set size while the specification of target system is fixed. The other is for the changes of the number of processors in target system while the input data set size is fixed. To develop accurate models, we built individual model for every kind of cache misses for each shared data structure in a program. The final model is then obtained by integrating them. Besides, combined use of Least Mean Squares and Robust Estimations enhances the quality of models by minimizing the distortion due to outliers. Empirical modeling technique produces extremely accurate models without analysis on sample data. In addition, since only snail scale simulations are necessary, once a set of samples can be collected, empirical method can be adopted in any research areas. In 17 cases among 24 trials, empirical models present extremely low prediction errors below $1\%$. In the remaining cases, the accuracy is excellent, as well. The models sustain high quality even when the behavioral characteristics of programs are irregular and the number of samples are barely enough.

  • Family companies are the unique industry-academic cooperation-related systems of Korean universities created by universities to promote various forms of industry-academic cooperation with companies. It is important to figure out the current status of family companies in order to understand the achievements of industrial-academic cooperation projects that have been actively pursued since the early 2000s. A lot of studies on industry-academic cooperation have focused mainly on the university's position. On the contrary, this study focuses on understanding the current status of the family company system and the status of industry-academic cooperation. Introduced in 2004, the Family Company System expanded rapidly as it was used as a performance indicator for college financial support projects related to industry-academic cooperation, with 174,425 companies registered as family companies as of 2017. A survey of family companies registered in universities carrying out the LINC+ project shows that companies registered in multiple universities are increasing, with relatively high demand and satisfaction for industry-academic cooperation among companies. Family companies were found to be relatively satisfied in terms of the use of R&D equipment or joint research, while they were relatively less satisfied in terms of workforce training and retraining. While companies have assessed product quality improvements through industry-academic cooperation, they have underestimated the effect of increasing sales and reducing production costs. Further, it was found that it was urgent to expand incentive systems and improve online information services to boost corporate participation in order to enhance the effectiveness of industry-academic cooperation.

  • Experimental research revealed that the spatial dispersion of aggregate grains exerts pronounced influences on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. Therefore, insight into this phenomenon is of paramount importance. Experimental approaches do not provide direct access to three-dimensional spacing information in concrete, however. Contrarily, simulation approaches are mostly deficient in generating packing systems of aggregate grains with sufficient density. This paper therefore employs a dynamic simulation system (with the acronym SPACE), allowing the generation of dense random packing of grains, representative for concrete aggregates. This paper studies by means of SPACE packing structures of aggregates with a Fuller type of size distribution, generally accepted as a suitable approximation for actual aggregate systems. Mean free spacing $\bar{\lambda}$, mean nearest neighbour distance (NND) between grain centres $\bar{\Delta}_3$, and the probability density function of ${\Delta}_3$ are used to characterize the spatial dispersion of aggregate grains in model concretes. Influences on these spacing parameters are studied of volume fraction and the size range of aggregate grains. The values of these descriptors are estimated by means of stereological tools, whereupon the calculation results are compared with measurements. The simulation results indicate that the size range of aggregate grains has a more pronounced influence on the spacing parameters than exerted by the volume fraction of aggregate. At relatively high volume density of aggregates, as met in the present cases, theoretical and experimental values are found quite similar. The mean free spacing is known to be independent of the actual dispersion characteristics (Underwood 1968); it is a structural parameter governed by material composition. Moreover, scatter of the mean free spacing among the serial sections of the model concrete in the simulation study is relatively small, demonstrating the sample size to be representative for composition homogeneity of aggregate grains. The distribution of ${\Delta}_3$ observed in this study is markedly skew, indicating a concentration of relatively small values of ${\Delta}_3$. The estimate of the size of the representative volume element (RVE) for configuration homogeneity based on NND exceeds by one order of magnitude the estimate for structure-insensitive properties. This is in accordance with predictions of Brown (1965) for composition and configuration homogeneity (corresponding to structure-insensitive and structure-sensitive properties) of conglomerates.

  • Seoul metropolitan government has been operating traffic signal control system with the name of COSMOS since 2001. COSMOS uses the degrees of saturation and congestion which are calculated by installing loop detectors. At present, inductive loop detector is generally used for detecting vehicles but it is inconvenient and costly for maintenance since it is buried on the road. In addition, the estimated queue length might be influenced in case of error occurred in measuring speed, because it only uses the speed of vehicles passing by the detector. A traffic signal control algorithm which enables smooth traffic flow at intersection is proposed. The proposed algorithm assigns vehicles to the group of each lane and calculates traffic volume and congestion degree using traffic information of each group using VANETs(Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks) inter-vehicle communication. It does not demand additional devices installation such as cameras, sensors or image processing units. In this paper, the algorithm we suggest is verified for AJWT(Average Junction Waiting Time) and TQL(Total Queue Length) under single intersection model based on GLD(Green Light District) Simulator. And the result is better than Random control method and Best first control method. In case real-time control method with VANETs is generalized, this research that suggests the technology of traffic control in signalized intersections using wireless communication will be highly useful.

  • Recently, there are a number of researches and developments for the personalized software platform for mobility based on SaaS. The platform requires an optimal virtual machine in order to satisfy the operating systems of various users for the software. In addition, the platform must guarantee the mobility of the users' working environments by supporting fast and secure services between internal and external networks in the platform operating systems. In order to verify the optimal behaviors of virtual machines for the platform, the performance of the virtual machines must be measured and analyzed in various perspectives. In the previous research, unfortunately, the performance of a virtual machine were conducted in the condition that a guest operating system was installed on the virtual machine and considered as a computer, by measuring the network traffic between the guest operating system and an external client operating system. This performance measurement was not suitable for a virtual machine for the platform since a number of different software must be handled in the virtual machine. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper presents a measurement method for network performance and proposes the most optimal virtual machine by the method.

  • R-trees are widely used in various areas such as geographical information systems, CAD systems and spatial databases in order to efficiently index multi-dimensional data. As data sets used in these areas grow in size and complexity, however, range query operations on R-tree are needed to be further faster to meet the area-specific constraints. To address this problem, there have been various research efforts to develop strategies for acceleration query processing on R-tree by using the buffer mechanism or parallelizing the query processing on R-tree through multiple disks and processors. As a part of the strategies, approaches which parallelize query processing on R-tree through Graphics Processor Units(GPUs) have been explored. The use of GPUs may guarantee improved performances resulting from faster calculations and reduced disk accesses but may cause additional overhead costs caused by high memory access latencies and low data exchange rate between GPUs and the CPU. In this paper, to address the overhead problems and to adapt GPUs efficiently, we propose a novel approach which uses a GPU as a buffer to parallelize query processing on R-tree. The use of buffer algorithm can give improved performance by reducing the number of disk access and maximizing coalesced memory access resulting in minimizing GPU memory access latencies. Through the extensive performance studies, we observed that the proposed approach achieved up to 5 times higher query performance than the original CPU-based R-trees.

  • Modern server systems are usually composed in the form of cluster systems in order to serve not only as many users but also as many kinds of applications as possible. The progression of the cluster system architecture leads in a middleware approach based on the Java framework. The middleware approach alleviates the efforts for the construction and the management of a server system but still preserves its performance and applications on the server. In this research, we introduce a new clustering scheme for the easy construction and maintenance of a cluster server system with the Java Management Extensions. We first demonstrate the construction and configuration process. Our experiment sets can verify that it is easy to construct, expand and manage a middleware based cluster system as well as the applications which reside on it. In addition, we can achieve reasonable performance on our service oriented clustered system with the help of state-of-the-art middleware. The experimental results of performance demonstration contain the availability of a server, and the effectiveness of load balancing and scheduling mechanisms. Especially, our service oriented scheduling mechanism was shown to successfully manage load imbalance under the normal load and cope with the overloaded situations, compared with other known scheduling mechanisms.

  • Due to the following reasons, the management of curtain wall parts and material is very Important. Firstly, curtain wall work is one of the main works in High-rise building construction for it takes about $10{\sim}15%$ of the total construction cost. Secondly, the whole process of curtain wall work including manu acture, delivery, storage, installation and maintenance is very complicated and sometimes more than 30 companies involve in the process. Thus there are many control points for curtain wall units. Thirdly, there are not enough space on site for material storage and this situation is more serious for sites in urban area. The purpose of this research is to validate an information systems using RFID technology that is developed to manage the curtain wall units following the process of curtain wall work. For the validation, the cycle times of curtain wall work before and a ter the system was used. The results show that using the systems shorten the cycle time of the curtain wall work. Thus it is concluded that the system can increase the efficiency of managing curtain wall work.

  • A subway system is one of the major transportation modes at a metropolitan area. When it meets the other lines, the metro station, so-called transferring station, is usually threatened by severe pedestrian congestion and safety issue of transit users including the transportation vulnerable. Although transportation planners forecast travel demand at the beginning, it is not easy to predict pedestrian flows precisely for a long term if land use plans have dramatically changed. Due to expensive costs, structural extension of metro stations is limited. Therefore, it requires efficient and technical improvements as meeting the demand of pedestrian and physical characteristics. In this study, the core mechanism of pedestrian movement-based simulation model was introduced and evacuation scenarios were analyzed with the developed model. As a result, the multiple optimal routes for unexpected events at the solid space of the multiple stories are easily searched through the simulator and in the case of Sadang Station, travel time can be reduced by 60% when the evacuation information and intuitive design are provided.

  • Recently, there has been an increase of accidents related to the rise in the use of Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV). To solve this problem, the National Assembly announced an amendment that restricted the use of PMV to bicycle roads and to prohibited for people under 13 years old to use PMV, but there is no detailed information about travel speed and safety. In this study, a survey was conducted by dividing the group into minors and adults based on the age of obtaining a driver's license to find out the direction of improvement of laws and systems about PMV. Our results showed that adults considered PMV as more dangerous (Adults 5.50, Minors 4.94) and the suggested age for PMV use was lower from minors than adults (Adults 15.70, Minors 13.85). We found that proper travel speed on bicycle roads differed according to the presence of a driveway (Driveway 26.21 km/h, Non-Driveway 23.55 km/h) and minors had higher a travel speed than adults on all types of bicycle road. Also, Helmets for PMV were seen as the most important safety equipment on all types of bicycle road. and the importance of other safety equipment differed according to the presence of a driveway (Driveway Front-Lighting, Non-Driveway Car Horn). Through this study, It proposes that we have to make new regulations about the use of front lights and horns, as well as enforcement measures that differentiate the speed on each bicycle road type as a way to improve the laws and systems for PMV.
