  • Studies were carried out to report breeding procedure and characteristics of Fb, a strain of silkworm with abnormal food habit polyphagous. Selection was continued up to the 14th generation toward higher incidence of cabbage leaves feeding variants. In the autumn of 1992(7th generation), selected strain were subjected to severe selection by feeding them on artificial diet that did not contain mulberry leaf powder. The results were clearly positive and reached to higher than 95% of cabbage feeding in the 14th generation. This strain was first discovered by feeding cabbage leaves, but later they were observed to eat some kind of plants like lettuce, Chinese cabbage, radish, beet, apple, persimmon, pear, etc. As described above the procedure, cabbage feeding trait was clearly heritable. The strain responsible for this traits was named Fb.

  • The Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that many collective observations gave a aspect of a global warming and other changes in the climate system. Future earth observation using satellite data should monitor global climate change, and should contribute to social benefits. Especially, human activities has given the big impacts to earth environment This is a very complex affair, and nature itself also impacts the clouds, namely the seasonal variations. JAXA (former NASDA) has the plan of the Global Change Observation Mission (GCOM) for monitoring of global environmental change. SGLI (Second Generation GLI) onboard GCOM-C (Climate) satellite, which is one of this mission, is an optical sensor from Near-UV to TIR. This sensor is the GLI follow-on sensor, which has the various new characteristics. Polarized/multi-directional channels and 250m resolution channels are the unique characteristics on this sensor. This sensor can be contributed to clarification of coastal change in sea surface. This paper shows the introduction of the unique aspects and characteristics of the next generation satellite sensor, SGLIIGCOM-C, and shows the preliminary research for this sensor.

  • Given a tree structured network in which each node has its own demand and also stands for a candidate location of a potential facility, such as plant or warehouse, a capacitated facility location problem on the network (CFLPOT) is to decide capacitated facility locations so that the total demand occurred on the network can be satisfied from those facilities with the minimum cost. In this paper, we first introduce a mixed integer programming formulation for CFLPOT with two additional assumptions, the indivisible demand assumption and the contiguity assumption and then show that it can be reformulated as a tree partitioning problem with an exponential number of variables. We then show that it can be solved in O($n^2b$) time by utilizing the limited column generation method developed by Shaw (1993), where n is the total number of nodes in the network and b is the maximum facility capacity. We also develop a depth-first dynamic programming algorithm with a running time of O(nb) for finding the locally maximal reduced cost which plays an important role in the limited column generation method. Finally, we implement our algorithms on a set of randomly generated problems and report the computational results.

  • The study reports on the design and performance of two air-filled and two partial ethanol-filled photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structures with a tetra core for supercontinuum generation. The PCFs are nonlinear with ultra-flattened zero dispersion. Holes with smaller areas are used to create a tetra-core PCF structure. Ethanol is filled in the holes of smaller area while the larger holes of cladding region are airfilled. Optical properties including dispersion, effective mode area, confinement loss, normalized frequency, and nonlinear coefficient of the designed PCF structures are investigated via full vector finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. A PCF structure with lead silicate as wafer exhibits significantly better results than a PCF structure with silica as wafer. However, both structures report dispersion at a telecommunication wavelength corresponding to 1.55 ㎛. Furthermore, the PCF structure with lead silicate as wafer exhibits a very high nonlinear coefficient corresponding to 1375 W-1 km-1 at the same wavelength. This scheme can be used for optical communication systems and in optical devices by exploiting the principle of nonlinearity.

  • In this paper, we report the development of two DEM (digital elevation model) generation algorithms over urban areas from an IKONOS stereo pair. One ("EpiMatch") is originally developed for SPOT images and modified for IKONOS images. It uses epipolar geometry for accurate DEM generation. The other is based on graph-cut algorithm in 3D voxel space. This algorithm is believed to work better on height discontinuities than EpiMatch. An IKONOS image pair over Taejon city area was used for tests. Using ground control points obtained from differential GPS, camera model was set up and stereo matching applied. As a result, two DEMs over urban areas were produced. Within a DEM from EpiMatch small houses appear as small "cloudy" patches and large apartment and industrial buildings are visually identifiable. Within the DEM from graph-cut we could achieve better height information on building boundaries. The results show that both algorithms can generate DEMs from IKONOS images although more research is required on handling height discontinuities (for "EpiMatch") and on faster computation (for "Graph-cut").

  • Clonorchiasis, caused by direct contact with Clonorchis sinensis worms and their excretory-secretory products (ESPs), is associated with chronic inflammation, malignant changes in bile ducts, and even cholangiocarcinogenesis. Our previous report revealed that intracellular free radicals enzymatically generated by C. sinensis ESPs cause NF-${\kappa}B$-mediated inflammation in human cholangiocarcinoma cells (HuCCT1). Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine the role of upstream Toll-like receptors (TLRs) on the initial host innate immune responses to infection. We found that treatment of HuCCT1 cells with native ESPs induced changes in TLR mRNA levels in a time-dependent manner, concomitant with the generation of free radicals. ESP-mediated free radical generation was markedly attenuated by preincubation of the cells with TLR1-4-neutralizing antibodies, indicating that at least TLR1 through 4 participate in stimulation of the host innate immune responses. These findings indicate that free radicals triggered by ESPs are critically involved in TLR signal transduction. Continuous signaling by this pathway may function in initiating C. sinensis infection-associated inflammation cascades, a detrimental event leading to progression to more severe hepatobiliary diseases.

  • When analyzing default predictions in real estate companies, the number of non-defaulted cases always greatly exceeds the defaulted ones, which creates the two-class imbalance problem. This lowers the ability of prediction models to distinguish the default sample. In order to avoid this sample selection bias and to improve the prediction model, this paper applies a minority sample generation approach to create new minority samples. The logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM) classification, and neural network (NN) classification use an imbalanced dataset. They were used as benchmarks with a single prediction model that used a balanced dataset corrected by the minority samples generation approach. Instead of using prediction-oriented tests and the overall accuracy, the true positive rate (TPR), the true negative rate (TNR), G-mean, and F-score are used to measure the performance of default prediction models for imbalanced dataset. In this paper, we describe an empirical experiment that used a sampling of 14 default and 315 non-default listed real estate companies in China and report that most results using single prediction models with a balanced dataset generated better results than an imbalanced dataset.

  • Nemaline myopathy is a genetically heterogeneous neuromuscular disorder and one of the most common congenital myopathies. The clinical manifestations usually vary depending on the age of onset. Neonatal nemaline myopathy has the worst prognosis, primarily due to respiratory failure. Several genes associated with nemaline myopathy have been identified, including NEB, ACTA1, TPM3, TPM2, TNNT1, CFL2, KBTBD13, KLHL40, KLHL41, LMOD3, and KBTBD13. Here, we report a neonatal Korean female patient with nemaline myopathy carrying compound heterozygous mutations in the gene KLHL40 as revealed using next generation sequencing (NGS). The patient presented with postnatal cyanosis, respiratory failure, dysphagia, and hypotonia just after birth. To identify the genetic cause underlying the neonatal myopathy, NGS-based gene panel sequencing was performed. Compound heterozygous pathogenic variants were detected in KLHL40: c.[1405G>T];[1582G>A] (p. [Gly469cys];[Glu528Lys]). NGS allows quick and accurate diagnosis at a lower cost compared to traditional serial single gene sequencing, which is greatly advantageous in genetically heterogeneous disorders such as myopathies. Rapid diagnosis will facilitate efficient and timely genetic counseling, prediction of disease prognosis, and establishment of treatments.

  • Fetal lung interstitial tumor (FLIT), which is characterized by immature interstitial cells resembling the fetal lung parenchyma of 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, is a rare respiratory neoplasm. This study presents the first reported FLIT in Korea. It also aims to refine the diagnostic method of FLIT and increase the accuracy of prognostic assessment by using next-generation sequencing to check for anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) gene rearrangement. Although the initial prognosis for FLIT has been promising since its first report in 2010, certain pathological features are associated with poorer outcomes. Therefore, achieving an accurate diagnosis of FLIT is crucial for avoiding unnecessary treatments beyond surgical resection.

  • The HELlOS-MASTER code system is verified through the benchmark of the critical experiments that were performed by RRC "Kurchatov Institute" with water-moderated hexagonally pitched lattices of highly enriched Uranium fuel rods (8Ow/o). We also used the same input by using the MCNP code that was described in the evaluation report, and compared our results with those of the evaluation report. HELlOS, developed by Scandpower A/S, is a two-dimensional transport program for the generation of group cross-sections, and MASTER, developed by KAERI, is a three-dimensional nuclear design and analysis code based on the two-group diffusion theory. It solves neutronics model with the AFEN (Analytic Function Expansion Nodal) method for hexagonal geometry. The results show that the HELIOSMASTER code system is fast and accurate enough to be used as nuclear core analysis tool for hexagonal geometry.ometry.
