  • During the shipbuilding construction, the repair works will be occurred by various reasons such as the natural disaster, mistakes of engineers or workers, defect of material, and so on. The one of the engineer's responsibilities is to design considering every possibility and to prevent the repair works due to the mistakes during construction stages, but actually it is very difficult and impossible to avoid every mistake. However, it is also the responsibility of engineers to find the best solution for the unavoidable mistakes which is to maintain the capacity of vessel and guarantee the safety for the repair works considering the construction schedules and economic cost. In this paper, it will be introduced the brief of repair works to the structural damage of the moon-pool structure in drillship which is built in our shipyard. For the verification of the structural strength, the fatigue analysis has been carried out based on the guide of Classification society. Furthermore, the modifications of structure design and welding procedure have been applied to avoid the stress concentration in the moon-pool structure.

  • A numerical analysis has been performed through implicit dynamic finite element analysis using the commercial package, ABAQUS in order to investigate effect of laser peening on welding residual stress mitigation of dissimilar metal welds in a safety injection nozzle of integral reactor. The implicit dynamic finite element analysis are compared with the previous experimental results. By comparison, it is identified that the implicit dynamic finite element analysis is valid for residual stress mitigation via laser peening. Implicit static finite element residual stress analysis has been performed for the dissimilar metal welds subject to inner repair welding. The analysis results represent that both axial and hoop residual stresses are tensile on inner surface of safety injection nozzle due to inner repair welding. Also Parametric study has performed to investigate effect of laser peening variables such as maximum impact pressure, duration time of pressure, spot diameter and peening direction on the welding residual stress mitigation. As a result, it is found that laser peening has the preventive maintenance effect to mitigate mainly residual stresses of region near inner surface.

  • The effects of weld repair on the durability in Al-10%Si-0.3%Mg castings were evaluated. The strength and fracture toughness in fusion zone were higher than those in the base metal by rapid cooling of fusion zone after welding. There were no significant differences between fatigue properties in castings and weld repaired specimen as the results of low cycle fatigue and rotating bending fatigue test. Therefore it was concluded that weld repairing did not have any significant effect on the mechanical properties of castings.

  • Steel bridges, which have been damaged by load and corrosion, need repair or strengthening. In general, before the repair welding procedure, cutting procedure carry out. Therefore, the investigating of the behavior of stress generated by cutting is so important for safety of structure. Residual stress produced by gas cutting was analyzed using 2D and 3D thermal elasto-plastic FEM. According to the results, the magnitude of temperature was analyzed by 2D-FEM is smaller than that was analyzed using the 3D-FEM program at the start and end edge of flange. And the magnitude and distribution of residual stress of perpendicular to the cutting line was analyzed by the 2D-FEM program was similar to that was analyzed by the 3B-FEM program. Therefore, it is possible to predict of cutting stress by 2D and 3D FEM.

  • Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding is essential technology to repair micro-cracking on the airfoil of blades and vanes for gas turbines. Understanding of the characteristics of TLP bonding of the superalloys is necessary in the application of the technology for repairing these components. In this study, the focus was on investigating TLP bonding characteristics of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitation strengthened Ni based superalloy. TLP bonding was carried out with an amorphous filler metal in various bonding conditions, and the microstructural characterization was investigated through optical microscopy (OM) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). The experimantal results explained clearly that bonding temperatures had critical effects on the TLP bonding behaviors, and that isothermal solidication of the joints made at higher temperatures than $1170^{\circ}C$ was controlled by Ti diffusion instead of B.

  • There are many weld defects such as surface crack, lack of fusion, and incomplete penetration(IP) in the butt joint weld of the existing steel bridges. The crack-like defects may significantly reduce the life of the structure. This paper presents the procedure and the results of the fatigue life assessment of the butt joints with weld defects in the existing steel girder bridge. The butt joint welds with incomplete penetration were instrumented with strain gages to determine the stress histogram under normal traffic. Based on the measured stress histogram the crack propagation analysis were performed for the fatigue life assessment. By using the suggested procedure and methodology, one can decide the time of periodic inspection and the necessity of repair of the butt joint welds with serious weld defects in the existing steel bridge. • Structural integrity assessment is indispensable for preventing catastrophic failure of industrial structures/components/facilities. This diagnosis of operating components should be done periodically for safe maintenance and economical repair. However, conventional standard methods for mechanical properties have the problems of bulky specimen, destructive and complex procedure of specimen sampling. Especially, the mechanical properties at welded zone including weldment and heat affected zone could not be evaluated individually due to their size requirement problem. So, an advanced indentation technique has been developed as a potential method for non-destructive testing of in-field structures. This technique measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation such as yield strength, tensile strength and work-hardening index. Also indentation technique can evaluate a residual stress based on the concept that indentation load-depth curves were shifted with the direction and the magnitude of residual stress applied to materials. In this study, we characterized the tensile properties and welding residual stress of various industrial facilities through the new techniques, and the results are introduced and discussed.

  • The operating temperature has been increased to improve the efficiency of gas turbine. The most advanced Gas turbine is operated at above $1,500^{\circ}C$. Improvement in material and cooling method permit hot gas path component to run at increased temperature. But, the repair of blades which are developed with advanced manufacture technique is difficult to use normal welding. Most of gas turbine blades are made of precipitation harden nickel base superalloy, which is very hard to weld. Therefore, the employment of welding filler on blade is solid solution nickel base superalloy(Hastelloy X, Inconel 617). In this study, Tensile test in high temperature was conducted on welded GTD111DS with GTD111 to evaluate effect of variation of pre, post treatment. The result of this study showed that the specimen was treated with optimum pre and post treatment(preweld HT($1200^{\circ}C$), Post treatment($1100^{\circ}C$ HIP, $1200^{\circ}C$ + $1100^{\circ}C$ + $800^{\circ}C$ HT) is mush superior.
