This study was performed to establish the characteristics of the heat affected zones from view point of the repair weldability for a damaged CrMoV steam turbine rotor steel. Characterization of the heat affected zones of the weldment was conducted with respect to various of postweld heat treatment temperatures, $566^{\circ}C$, $621^{\circ}C$ and $677^{\circ}C$. The evaluations of the heat affected zones were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, Charpy v-notch impact, tensile and stress-rupture tests. The results indicated that the effect of the postweld heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$ exhibited the favorable microstructure and mechanical properties for the stability of the heat affected zones. While the heat affected zone of the weldment, produced without postweld heat treatment, displayed the inferior toughness and microstructure indicating localized carbide precipitations on the grain boundary. It was also indicated that the stability of the heat affected zones were deteriorated by the formation of the cavitation on the grain boundaries.
This study was performed to determine the repair weldability of the damaged Ni type superalloy used for gas turbine blade. The experimental works included the evaluation of the microstructures of the damaged blade, selection of the repair welding procedure, characterization of repair weldment and finding the heat treatment procedures for repaired weldment. The morphology of the microstructure for the base metal was composed of austenite matrix with cubical ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase, MC type coarse precipitates located within grain and fine $M_{23}C_6$ type precipitates decorated at grain boundaries. The repair welding process using 90 amp current exhibited the best weld properties showing no weld microcracks. The solution and aging heat treatments of the repaired weldment could recover the original service properties of the damaged blade.
This study was performed to develop repair technology for J-Groove dissimilar metal weld of pressurizer heater sleeve in nuclear power plants. Pad, J-Groove automatic welding and mechanical machining equipments to develop repair technology using 'Half Nozzle Repair' were designed and manufactured. To obtain the optimum welding process parameters during Pad temperbead overlay welding, several welding experiments using Taguchi method were conducted. Weldability of Pad overlay weld specimens was estimated by PT/RT test, FE-SEM, EDS and Vickers hardness test. Also, J-Groove welding to adjust weld shape conditions requiring in ASME Code was carried out and its integrity of weld specimens was evaluated through PT/RT test and optical microscope. Consequently, it was revealed that Pad and J-Groove overlay welding for dissimilar metal weld of pressurizer heater sleeve could be possible to meet Code standard without weld defect.
We have investigated the traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, including the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516), under various specific circumstances regarding post heat treatment, multilayered welds, and thick or repeated welds for repair. For evaluations, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by micro vickers hardness, tensile, and etching tests the results were compared with those of EPR tests. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW and SAW with the time of heat treatment as the variable, a that was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, and 1280 min. Then, the change in corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. With carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro-hardness gradually increased and decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area also increased gradually. The oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316 and the clad metal showed STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results on multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. The purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations for developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.

Ni-base superalloys are used extensively in industry, both in aeroengines and land based turbines. About 60% by weight of most modern gas turbine engine structural components are made of Ni-base superalloys. To satisfy practical demands, the efficiency of gas turbine engines has been steadily and systematically increased by design modifications to handle higher turbine inlet or firing temperatures. However, the increase in operating temperatures has lead to a decrease in the life of components and increase in costs of replacement. Moreover, around 80% of the large frame size industrial/utility gas turbines operating in the world today were installed in the mid-sixties to early seventies and are now 25 to 30 years old. Consequently, there are greater opportunities now to repair and refurbish the older models. Basically, there are two major factors influencing the weldability of the cast alloys: strain-age cracking and liquation cracking. Susceptibility to strain-age cracking is due to the total Ti plus AI content of the alloy; Liquation cracking is due either to the presence of low melting constituents or constitutional liquation of constituents. Though Rene 41 superalloy has 4.5wt.% total Ti and Al content and falls just below the safe limit proposed by Prager et al., controlled grain size and special heat treatments are needed to obtain crack-free welds. Varying heat treatments and filler materials were used in a laboratory study, then the actual welding of service parts was carried out to verity the possibility of crack-tree weld of components fabricated from Rene 41 superalloy. The microstructural observations indicated that there were two kinds of carbides in the FCC matrix. MC carbides were located along the grain boundaries, while M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ carbide was located both inter and intra granularly. Two kinds of filler materials, Rene 41 and Hastelloy X were used to gas tungsten arc weld a patch into the sheet metal, along with varying pre-weld heat treatments. The microstructure, hardness and tensile tests were determined. The service distressed parts were categorized into three classes: with large cracks, with medium cracks and with small or no visible cracks. No significant difference in microstructure among the specimens was observed. Specimens were cut from the corner and the straight edge of the patch repair, away from the corner. The only cracks present were found to be associated with inadequate surface preparation to remove oxidation. Guidelines for oxide removal and the welding procedures developed in the research enabled crack-free welds to be produced.d.
The effect of residual metallic sodium on the solidification cracking susceptibility of type 316FR stainless steel was investigated via transverse-Varestraint tests. And a solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of type 316FR stainless steel was 37 K. However, the BTR expanded from 37 to 67 K, as the amount of metallic sodium at the specimen surface increased from 0 to $7.99mg/cm^2$. Microstructural observation of the weld metal suggested that metallic sodium existed in the weld metal, including in the cell boundaries, during welding solidification. Thermodynamic calculations suggested that sodium expanded the temperature range of solidliquid coexistence during welding solidification of the steel weld metal. Therefore, the increased solidification cracking susceptibility (i.e., expansion of the BTR) in the residual sodium environment was attributed to enhanced segregation of sodium during the welding solidification; this segregation, in turn, resulted in an expanded temperature range of solid-liquid coexistence.

In casting steels for offshore construction, manufacturing integral casted structures to prevent fatigue cracks in the stress raisers is superior to using welded structures. Here, mold design and casting analysis were conducted for integral casting steel. The laminar flow of molten metal was analyzed and distributions of hot spots and porosities were studied. A prototype was subsequently produced, and air vents were designed to improve the surface defects caused by the release of gas. A radiographic test revealed no internal defects inside the casted steel. Evaluating the chemical and mechanical properties of specimens sampled from the product revealed that target values were quantitatively satisfied. To assess weldability in consideration of repair welding, the product was machined with grooves and welded, after which the mechanical properties of hardness as well as tensile, impact, and bending strengths were evaluated. No substantive differences were found in the mechanical properties before and after welding.
Gas turbine blades serviced for a period are usually repaired for reuse via "rejuvenation processes" including fluoride ion cleaning, brazing or welding, and recoating. Among these processes, the welding process is applied to rebuilt damaged parts of the blade in which welding materials being mostly Ni base superalloy are supplied in the form of powder or wire. When powder is used in the welding process, the uniform supply of powder is a very important factor for the uniformity of welding. According to our experience, the uniformity was very poor with the powder supply system only utilizing pressurized air flow. A new powder supply system was developed in which powder is supplied via air flow and simultaneously mechanically. The welding uniformity was much improved with this new system. In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded parts obtained from several kinds of powder using the new powder supply system were characterized.
