  • In order to prohibit global warming, various kinds of regulatory policies have been established in the whole world. One example is the establishment of the Renewable Portfolio Standard. It requires the increased portion in energy production from renewable energy sources. The Republic of Korea adopted the act on the promotion of the development, use, and diffusion of new and renewable energy since 2012. However, in spite of the effort on the consideration of the renewable energy sources, it was reported the carbon intensity of electricity in Korea was not that low in 2015. Thus, it is required to examine the recent state of the utilization degree of the renewable energy sources in Korea. This paper analyzed the statistical data provided by Korea Power Exchange (KPX) to examine any problems and solutions for generating electricity from the renewable energy sources. We focused on the generation capacity provided by the power plants participated in the market, the electric power trading amount, and the utilization coefficient for 10 years. By analyzing the data, we provide an alternative to solve some imbalance among the factors contributing to renewable energy use.

  • Governments and global companies are working towards using renewable sources of energy, such as solar, wind, and biomass, to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. In the defense sector, the new strategy seeks to increase the sustainable use of renewable energy sources to improve energy security and reduce military transportation. Renewable energy technologies are affected by factors such as climate, resources, and policy environments. Therefore, governments and global companies need to carefully select the optimal renewable energy sources and deployment strategies. Biomass is a promising energy source owing to its high energy density and ease of collection and harvesting. Many techniques have been developed to convert the biomass into electrical energy. Recently, diverse types of fuel cells have been suggested that can directly convert the chemical energy of biomass into electrical energy. The recently developed biomass flow fuel cell has significantly enhanced the power density several hundred times, reaching to ~100 mW/cm2. In this review, we explore various strategies for producing electrical energy from biomass using modern methods, and discuss the challenges and potential prospects of this method.

  • Although renewable energy sources are more environmentally friendly than fossil energy sources, it is far more costly, considering current technological standards. It would not present many competitive advantages in the power market. If the renewable electricity is viable in the market, the government should take 'visible' actions to compensate production costs. Popular policies, such as Feed-In-Tariff and Renewable Portfolio Standards, can help to attract investors into generators of renewable electricity. But presently, they are mainly financed through a undifferentiated increase of electricity bills and occasionally confronted with the opposition of the electricity consumers. And most policies tend to focus on increasing the supply of renewable electricity with little consideration toward elevating the motivation of consumers. This study evaluates the potential of environmentally friendly energy consumption and examines the 'green pricing' program which realize the potential.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic methodology for small signal stability analysis of power system with correlated wind sources. The approach considers not only the stochastic characteristics of wind speeds which are treated as random variables with Weibull distributions, while also the wind speed spatial correlations which are characterized by a correlation matrix. The approach based on the 2m+1 point estimate method and Cornish Fisher expansion, the orthogonal transformation technique is used to deal with the correlation of wind farms. A case study is carried out on IEEE New England system and the probabilistic indexes for eigenvalue analysis are computed from the statistical processing of the obtained results. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are confirmed by comparing with the results of Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method can actually capture the probabilistic characteristics of mode properties of the power systems with correlated wind sources and the consideration of spatial correlation has influence on the probability of system small signal stability.

  • This study suggests a simple economic model to analyze electricity grid that consists of different power sources. The substitutability of renewable energy for nuclear power in Korean electricity transmission network is investigated by suggested model. The monthly data from January 2006 to December 2013 reported by Electricity Power Statistics Information System (EPSIS) of Korea Power EXchange (KPX) are used. To estimate the elasticities of substitution among four power sources (i.e. coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable energy), this paper uses the trans-log cost function model on which local concavity restrictions are imposed. The estimated Hicks-Allen and Morishima elasticity of substitution shows that renewable electricity and nuclear power are complementary. The results also evidenced that renewable electricity and fossil fueled thermal power generation are substitutes.

  • This study aims to restrain free conducting wire-type particles which are commonly and dangerously existing within DC gas-insulated transmission lines. A realistic platform of a coaxial cylindrical electrode was established by using a high-speed camera and a partial discharge (PD) monitor to observe the motion, PD, and breakdown of these particles. The probabilities of standing or bouncing, which can be affected by the length of the particles, were also quantitatively examined. The corona images of the particles were recorded, and particle-triggered PD signals were monitored and extracted. Breakdown images were also obtained. The air-gap breakdown with the particles was subjected to mechanism analysis on the basis of stream theory. Results reveal that the lifting voltage of the wire particles is almost irrelevant to their length but is proportional to the square root of their radius. Short particles correspond to high bouncing probability. The intensity and frequency of PD and the micro-discharge gap increase as the length of the particles increases. The breakdown voltage decreases as the length of the particles decreases.

  • A reliability model of wind farm located in mountainous land with complex terrain, which considers the cable and wind turbine (WT) failures, is proposed in this paper. Simple wake effect has been developed to be applied to the wind farm in mountainous land. The component failures in the wind farm like the cable and WT failures which contribute to the wind farm power output (WFPO) and reliability is investigated. Combing the wind speed distribution and the characteristic of wind turbine power output (WTPO), Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is used to obtain the WFPO. Based on clustering algorithm the multi-state model of a wind farm is proposed. The accuracy of the model is analyzed and then applied to IEEE-RTS 79 for adequacy assessment.

  • The economic development of most countries in the world has negatively impacted fossil energy resources. Fossil energy sources such as petroleum and coal are increasingly depleted. When energy sources are exhausted, renewable energy sources are growing strongly. Renewable energy development can help to replace diminishing fossil fuels. Furthermore, the usage of renewable energy can contribute to a green economy and sustainable development by protecting the environment. Solar power on the roof is one of the many renewable energy sources available. But at present, the investment in roof voltage systems has not developed strongly in Vietnam. This paper uses the SEM model to evaluate the factors affecting investment in rooftop solar power in some provinces of Vietnam. The article uses the household interview method. The article has given 8 factors affecting the decision to invest in rooftop solar power for households. Research results show that most of the factor variables have a positive impact on the decision to invest in rooftop solar power. Based on assessing the factors affecting the decision to invest in rooftop solar power, the article will provide conclusions and policy suggestions to increase investment in rooftop solar power in Vietnam.

  • When the RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standards) becomes effective in 2012, the use of renewable energy will be dramatically increased. However, there are no production simulations and demand supply programs that reflect the characteristics of the renewable energy. This paper analyzes correlations of the domestic wind power and solar power generation pattern in different areas and those of these sources' output and load pattern. Based on the regional correlation analysis, an appropriate method that uses a average output of the renewable energy or another modeling that takes account of uncertainty could be selected. Because it's output is dependent on weather condition, we can not control the generation of renewable energy, that is the reason why the correlation between the load and output pattern of sources can be helpful to determine whether the renewable energy is modeled as a generator or load modifier. Through this analysis, a basis will be provided in order to properly model the renewable energy source.

  • By introducing RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard) for reduction of greenhouse gas, Renewable energy sources have becoming widespread gradually. However, Renewable energy sources, such as wind power and PV are difficult to control the output and they have intermittent characteristics of the output. These characteristics would cause some problems when it is connected in the power system. In order to solve these problems, Energy Storage Systems(ESS) are considered to use. Although there are many different storage devices, the utilization of Secondary Battery is the one of the best ways to stabilize an output fluctuation of RES because of its fast responsibility. For that reason, it would better fit a large-capacity of Secondary battery for stabilization. However, batteries cannot be installed with a large capacity blindly because of its expensive cost. So to select proper capacity of the battery is an important consideration. This paper presented a methodology for the optimal capacity and operation of ESS in microgrids.
