Due to global environmental regulations and policies with rapid advancement of renewable energy technologies, the development type of renewable energy sources (RES) in power systems is expanding from small-scale distributed generation to large-scale grid-connected systems. In the near future, it is expected that RES achieves grid parity which means the equilibrium point where the power cost of RES is equal to the power costs of conventional generators. However, although RES would achieve the grid parity, the cost related with development of large-scale RES is still a big burden. Furthermore, it is hard to determine a suitable capacity of RES because of their output characteristics affected by locations and weather effects. Therefore, to determine an optimal capacity for RES becomes an important decision-making problem. This study proposes a method for determining an optimal installed capacity of RES from the business viewpoint of an independent power plant (IPP). In order to verify the proposed method, we have performed case studies on real power system in Incheon and Shiheung areas, South Korea.

Due to environmental regulation and technical improvements, renewable energy sources (RES) are increasingly penetrated and operated in power systems. Clean energy technologies have become cost-competitive with conventional power systems, and in the near future, the generation cost of RES is expected to approach grid parity. In this situation, it should be considered an extraordinarily important issue to be maximized resulting in utilization of RES as well as to develop technologies for efficiency improvement of RES. Therefore, in this paper, the method for determining an optimal installed capacity and interconnected location of RES is proposed in order to minimize the cost of energy not supplied, which can contribute to improve distribution reliability.
The increasing penetration of renewable energy based distributed generation(DG) sources in low-voltage grid feeders has been receiving increased attention. High penetration of renewable energy generation in a distribution system can cause power quality and efficiency problem. In this paper, the operating plan for ESS and the efficiency analysis on RES(Renewable energy source) concentrated distribution system.
This study aims to propose a new optimization-based approach for design and analysis of the stand-alone hybrid energy supply system using renewable energy sources (RES). In the energy supply system, we include multiple energy production technologies such as Photovoltaics (PV), Wind turbine, and fossil-fuel-based AC generator along with different types of energy storage and conversion technologies such as battery and inverter. We then select six different regions of Korea to represent various characteristics of different RES potentials and demand profiles. We finally designed and analyzed the optimal RES stand-alone energy supply system in the selected regions using multiobjective optimization (MOOP) technique, which includes two objective functions: the minimum cost and the minimum $CO_2$ emission. In addition, we discussed the feasibility and expecting benefits of the systems by comparing to conventional systems of Korea. As a result, the region of the highest RES potential showed the possibility to remarkably reduce $CO_2$ emissions compared to the conventional system. Besides, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of the RES-based energy system is identified to be slightly higher than conventional energy system: 0.35 and 0.46 $/kWh, respectively. However, the total life-cycle emission of $CO_2$ ($LCE_{CO2}$) can be reduced up to 470 g$CO_2$/kWh from 490 g$CO_2$/kWh of the conventional systems.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by fossil fuels consumption is one of the challenging issues worldwide. Renewable energy source (RES)-based energy supply system can be a promising alternative to the current fossil fuel-based system. In this study, we propose an optimization approach for designing a stand-alone hybrid energy supply system using RES and evaluating economic performances of the energy systems. The suggested approach is used to answer the questions; i) what technology is suitable to various demand sectors in different regions, and ii) how does it cost to meet the demand in term of the levelized costs of energy (LCOE). We illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach by applying to the design problem of energy supply systems for residential, agricultural and commercial sectors of Korea. As the results of LCOE analysis, for the residential sector has the LCOE ranging of $0.37~$0.44/kWh, the agricultural sector of $0.15~$0.61/kWh and the commercial sector of $0.12~$0.28/kWh.

Increasing of the nonlinear type power electronics equipment, power conditioning systems (PCS) have been researched and developed for many years in order to compensate for harmonic disturbances and reactive power. PCS's not only improve harmonic current and power factor in the ac grid line but also achieves energy saving used by the renewable energy source (RES). In this paper, the implementation of a current controlled voltage source inverter (CCVSI) using RES for PCS is presented. The basic principle and control algorithm is theoretically analyzed and the design methodology of the system is discussed. The proposed system could achieve power quality control (PQC) to reduce harmonic current and improve power factor, and demand side management (DSM) to supply active power simultaneously, which are both operated by the polarized ramp time (PRT) current control algorithm and the grid-interactive current control algorithm. A 1KVA test model of the CCVSI has been built using IGBT controlled by a digital signal processor (DSP). To verify the proposed system, a comprehensive evaluation with theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results is presented.
Voltage and frequency stability issues occur in existing centralized power system due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources, which decrease grid absorptive capacity of them. The grid-connected inverter that mimics synchronous generator characteristics with inertia characteristic is beneficial to electric power system stability. This paper proposed a novel three-phase four-wire grid-connected inverter with an independent neutral line module that mimics synchronous generators. A mathematical model of the synchronous generator and operation principles of the synchronverter are introduced. The main circuit and control parameters design procedures are also provided in detail. A 10 kW prototype is built and tested for further verification. The primary frequency modulation and primary voltage regulation characteristics of the synchronous generator are emulated and automatically adjusted by the proposed circuit, which helps to supports the grid.
This study analyzed the optimal electricity cost of a 100% renewable energy source (RES) based system. Especially energy storage system (EES) and supplementary biopower system as well as photovoltaic (PV) and wind power component were included in the proposed RES-based system to overcome the intermittence of RESs and to efficiently balance energy supply and demand. To comparatively analyze the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of different RES-based systems, six scenarios were developed according to the involved RESs: PV, wind, PV/wind, PV/biopower, wind/biopower, and PV/wind/biopower systems. We then applied the proposed systems to build a 100% RES-based system in Jeju Island, Korea. As a result, the single component based system, PV and wind power system of 0.18 and 0.28 $/kWh, respectively, cannot compete with the economics of existing electricity grid. However, the optimal LCOE of the hybrid system where PV and wind power are used as main supply options and biopower as supplementary option was identified to be 0.08 $/kWh, which can compete with the economics of an existing electricity grid.
This study aims to design energy supply systems from various energy sources for transportation sectors and comparatively analyze the life cycle cost of different scenario-based systems. For components of the proposed energy supply system, we consider a typical oil refinery, byproduct hydrogen system, renewable energy source (RES)-based electric generation system and existing electricity grid. We also include three types of vehicles in transportation sector such as internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), electric vehicle (EV), fuel cell vehicle (FCV). We then develop various energy supply scenarios which consist of such components and evaluate the economic performance of different systems from the viewpoint of life cycle cost. Finally we illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework by conducting the design problem of energy supply systems of Jeju, Korea. As the results of life cycle cost analysis, EV fueled by electricity from grid is the most economically feasible. In addition, we identify key parameters to contribute the total life cycle cost such as fuel cost, vehicle cost, infra cost and maintenance cost using sensitivity analysis.
Voltage-controlled voltage source inverter (VCVSI) based distributed generation systems (DGS) using renewable energy sources (RES) is becoming increasingly popular as grid support systems in both remote isolated grids as well as end of rural distribution lines. In VCVSI based DGS for load voltage stabilization, the power angle between the VCVSI output voltage and the grid is an important design parameter because it affects not only the power flow and the power factor of the grid but also the capacity of the grid, the sizing of the decoupling inductor and the VCVSI. In this paper, the steady state modeling and analysis in terms of power flow and power demand of the each component in the system at the different values of maximum power angle is presented. System design considerations are examined for various load and grid conditions. Experimental results conducted on a I KVA VCVSI based DGS prove the analysis and simulation results.
