  • There has been increasing interest in the renewable energies. Wind energy is worldwide number one renewable energy from the installed capacity viewpoint. Most of the power systems utilizing wind energy are connected to other large systems. In such integrated systems, frequency control is not big issue. Rut the situation is different in isolated systems like Korean power system. It is important to assess appropriate capacity of wind power for our system, as it affects the system operation and control strategy. In this paper we made it clear the relationship among generator inertias, governor droop, system damping and wind energy capacity.

  • The world is moving towards a post-carbon society and needs clean and renewable energy for sustainable development. There are many methodological approaches which are helping this shift based on analyzed data about energy resources and which focus on limited types of energy including liquid fossil, solid fossil, gaseous fossil, and biomass (e.g. IPCC Guidelines, ISO 14064-1, WRI Protocol, etc.). We should also consider environmental impact (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, water use, etc.) and the economic cost of the renewable energy to make a better decision. Recently, researchers have addressed the environmental impact of new technologies which include photovoltaics, wind turbines, hydroelectric power, and biofuel. In this work, we analyze the environmental impact with a carbon emission factor to present a correlation between $CO_2$ emission and the cost of energy resources standardized by the energy output. In addition, we reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as another methodology. Researchers who are studying energy systems have ignored the impacts of entire energy systems, e.g. the extraction and processing of fossil fuels. In power sector, the assessment should include extraction, processing, and transportation of fuels, building of power plants, production of electricity, and waste disposal. Therefore LCA could be more suitable tool for energy cost and environmental impact estimation.

  • Recently, as research on smart farms has been actively conducted, systems for efficiently cultivating crops have been introduced and various energy systems using renewable energy such as solar, geothermal and wind power generation have been proposed to save the energy. In this paper, we propose a new and renewable energy convergence system for crops that provides energy independence and improved crop cultivation environment. First, we present LPWA-based communication node and gateway for ICT-based data collection. Then we propose an integrated monitoring server that collects energy data, crop growth data, and environmental data through a communication node and builds it as big data to perform optimal energy management that reflects the characteristics of the environment for cultivating crops. The proposed system is expected to contribute to the production of low-cost, high-quality crops through the fusion of renewable energy and smart farms.

  • Photovoltaic and Thermal collector (PV/T) systems are renewable energy devices that can produce electricity and heat energy simultaneously using solar panels and heat exchangers. Since PV/T systems are exposed to the outdoors, their reliability is affected by various environmental factors. This paper presents a reliability test for a PV/T system and evaluates the test results. The reliability assessment entails performance, environment, safety, and life tests. The factor that had the greatest influence on the life of the system was the hydraulic pressure applied to the heat exchanger. A test was conducted by repeatedly applying pressure to the PV/T system, and a reliability analysis was conducted based on the test results. As a result, the shape parameter (β) value of 5.6658 and the B10life 308,577 cycles at the lower 95% confidence interval were obtained.

  • While global demand for energy increases annually, at the same time the demand for carbon-free, sulphur-free and NOx-free energy sources grows considerably. This state poses a challenge in the research for newer sources like biomass and shale gas as well as renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydraulic energy. Although wave energy also is a form of renewable energy it has not fully been exploited technically and economically so far. This study tries to explain those reasons in which it is beyond doubt that the demand for wave energy will soon increase as fossil energy resources are depleted and environmental concerns gain more importance. The electrical energy supplied to the grid shall be produced from wave energy whose conversion devices can basically work according to three different systems. i. Systems that exploit the motions or shape deformations of their mechanisms involved, being driven by the energy of passing waves. ii. Systems that exploit the weight of the seawater stored in a reservoir or the changes of water pressure by the oscillations of wave height, iii. Systems that convert the wave motions into air flow. One of the aims of this study is to present the classification deficits of the wave energy converters (WECs) of the "wave developers" prepared by the European Marine Energy Center, which were to be reclassified. Furthermore, a new classification of all WECs listed by the European Marine Energy Center was arranged independently. The other aim of the study is to assess the technological state of the art of these WECs designed and/or produced, to obtain an overview on them.

  • The small-scaled onsite generators such as photovoltaic power, wind power, biomass and fuel cell belong to decarbonization techniques. In general, these generators tend to be connected to utility systems, and they are called distributed generations (DGs) compared with conventional centralized power plants. However, DGs may impact on stabilization of utility systems, which gets utility into trouble. In order to reduce utility's burdens (e.g., investment for facilities reinforcement) and accelerate DG introduction, the advanced operation algorithms under the existing utility systems are urgently needed. This paper presents the advanced voltage regulation method in power systems since the sending voltage of voltage regulators has been played a decisive role restricting maximum installable DG capacity (MaxC_DG). For the proposed voltage regulation method, the difference from existing voltage regulation method is explained and the detailed concept is introduced in this paper. MaxC_DG estimation through case studies based on Korean model network verifies the superiority of the proposed method.

  • Recently, smart grid for solving energy problems have been receiving growing attention. Also, renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic and fuel cell as future energy for realizing smart grid have been widely studied. On the other hand, hybrid structures have been proposed since the output power of these renewable energy sources is usually dependent on weather conditions. This paper proposes a hybrid system involving a proper photovoltaic in the hybrid system, Polymer Elecrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell with water electrolyzer and ultracapacitor. The results of simulation and output of the proposed model are established and analysed by Matlab/Simulink and SimPowerSystems.

  • The application of renewable energy in electric power systems is growing rapidly in order to make provision for the inequality of the climate, the dwindling supplies of coal, oil and natural gas and a further rise in oil prices. Solar cell generators(SCG) is one of the fastest growing renewable energy. A study on the renewable energy is getting more important for the application of renewable energy. This paper presents the capacity factor of SCG by calculating the probabilistic production energy of SCG.

  • At the moment, with an interest in renewable energy sources (RES) that continue to grow its penetration will be expected to considerably increase in the future power system. However, this penetration of RES leads to new challenges to be solved in electric power systems. In this paper, optimal configuration of renewable energy resources and operation strategy is presented. By using this methodology for allocation of the optimal sizes and types, system operational efficiency and stability of the microgrid will be maximized.
