  • Mining wastes left without any proper treatment are affecting barren or arable lands where are located near and far from source through various pathway Metals are the only hazardous constituents that cannot be destroyed or altered by chemical or thermal methods and must be converted into the most insoluble and harmless form as possible, which have slower leaching rates than the original species, to prevent their reentry into the environment. Three types of chemical additives used in this study to immobilize heavy metals showed high immobilized capacity (q) and the efficiency (k) in the order of CaO, $Na_2$S.$5H_2$O, and $CaCO_3$. In addition, bentonite was considered as a good additive to remedy AM(Acid Mine Drainage) from the results of the physicochemical characteristics and immobilizing capacity. The Freundlich coefficients (n and k) from adsorption isotherm for the heavy metals adsorbed on 50g Benlonite were calculated.

  • In this study, the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$ from aqueous solution on the biochar derived from used coffee grounds at different pyrolysis temperatures has been investigated as a potential low-cost treatment method for heavy metal-containing waters. Three biochar samples prepared by heating coffee sludge at temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ (B300), $500^{\circ}C$ (B500), and $700^{\circ}C$ (B700) were tested for the adsorption capacity and kinetics of Cd and Cu. Also the influencing factor of heavy metal removal by ion exchange in terms of cation exchange capacity (CEC) of each biochar was measured. Adsorption of Ca and Cu by biochar produced at higher pyrolysis temperature showed higher adsorption capacity but the optimal pyrolysis temperature based on performance and economy was known as $500^{\circ}C$. Sorption of Cu and Cd by biochar followed a Langmuir model at pH 6~6.5, attributing mainly to surface sorption. The biochar was more effective in Cu and Cd sorption than activated carbon (AC), with BC 500 being the most effective, which indicates that sorption of Cd and Cu by coffee sludge biochar is partly influenced by chemical sorption on surface functional group as well as physical sorption.

  • Red mud is generated as a by-product in the production of $Al(OH)_{3}/Al_2O_3$ from bauxite ore. In this study the pellet-type adsorbents have been made from the red mud, and their adsorption capacities of heavy metal ions have been tested. The pellet-type adsorbents were synthesized to utilize the excellent adsorption capacity of the powder-type adsorbent for industrial application. The pellet-type adsorbents were prepared by mixing several kinds of additives with the red mud. It is found that the pellet-type adsorbent, made by sintering a mixture of red mud (96.0 wt%), polypropylene (2.5%), fly ash (0.5 w%), and sodium metasilicate(1.0 wt%) at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, has the highest adsorption capacity. in this work, the two kinds of pellet-type adsorbents (bead-type, crushed-type) were prepared. The crushed-type adsorbent was found to show a better adsorption/desorption performance than the bead-type adsorbent. The crushed-type adsorbent showed a good adsorption capacity of $Pb^{2+}$ like the powder-type adsorbent.

  • The rapid growth of the economy recently gas led to increasing social needs for large scaled structures, such as high-rise buildings and long span bridges. In building these large-scaled structures the trend has been to construct foundations beating on or in rock masses in order to ensure stability and serviceability of the structure under several significant loads. However. when designing the drilled shaft foundation socketed in rock masses in Korea, the bearing capacity for the pier used to be determined by using the empirical expression, which depends on the compressive strength of the rock, or presumable bearing capacity recommended on foreign references or manuals. In this study, numerical analyses are used to trace rock-socketed pile behavior and are made alike with pile load test result in field. The result of this numerical analyses study have shown that following factors have a significant influence on the load capacity and settlement of the pier. Significant influence first factor of the geometry of the socket as defined by the length to diameter ratio. Second factor of the modulus of the rock both around the socket and below the base. third factor of the condition of the end of the pier with respect to the removal of drill cuttings and other loose material from the bottom of the socket.

  • Full load rejection capability of nuclear power plant depends primarily on steam dump capacity (SDCAP) and steam generator level control capability. Recently, Ulchin Units 1&2 have performed stretched power uprate (SPU) and replacement steam generator (RSG) projects, which increase the power by 4.5 percent. They change major design or operating parameters and especially reduces steam dump capacity at full power due to increase of the steam flow. The reduction of SDC after SPU results in degradation of heat removal capability in full load rejection transients. Therefore, we should perform evaluation to determine whether reactor trips occur in large load rejection transients. Uchin Units 1&2 have experienced full load rejection (FLR) three times from 2004 to 2010. Operating data from the plant occurrence of FLR at Ulchin Units 1&2 showed that steam generator (SG) level transients were limiting in point of reactor trip. However the plant had never reached reactor trip in the FLR and successfully continued in house load operation. The parameters and setpoints for the SG will be changed if the SG is replaced. Therefore, we evaluated the appropriateness of steam dump, main feedwater and steam generator water level control system preventing the plant from reactor trip in case of FLR by the parameter sensitivity study whether SG water level operated smoothly after SPU and RSG projects.

  • Since the cement industry is expected to face serious setbacks in the near future associated with environmental concerns. With the advent of new technologies and increased public awareness about global environmental issues, the cement industry is actively seeking to adopt new technologies as part of an effort to diversity its resources. This study is designed to assess the fundamental properties of zeolite cement concrete which consists mainly of natural zeolite, which is known for removal of and harmful gas, ion exchange capacity removing cation contaminant including heavy metals and ammonia, absorptive capacity and molecular sieving effect together with excellent insulation capacity as a porous material, and recently draws much attention for its possibility as an alternative material to cement. The study was conducted to show the compressive strength of concrete, slump, bleeding and air volume according to the changes of natural zeolite and alkali activator(NaOH). As a result of measuring the compressive strength of natural zeolite concrete, it was almost 40MPa and displayed similar to general concrete in the tests of slump, bleeding and air volume, with which it was considered that it may be used as a future high performance, high performance construction material.

  • This study examined the adsorption of a synthetic cutting fluid and cutting fluid effluent on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan, Chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were prepared in form of beads and fibers. A series of batch experiments were carried out as a function of the initial concentration of cutting fluid, contact time and pH of the fluid. The contact angle study suggested that the SDS-modified chitosan was more hydrophobic than chitosan. The Zeta potential study showed that chitosan, SDS-modified chitosan and synthetic cutting fluid had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7.8, 9 and 3.2, respectively. SDS-modified chitosan has a greater adsorption capacity than chitosan. The experimental results show that adsorption capacity of the cutting fluid on 1.0 g of SDS-modified chitosan at pH 3 and for a contact time of 120 min was approximately 2,500 g/kg. The adsorption capacity of chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan increased with decreasing pH. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) adsorption models were used to explain the adsorption isotherm. The Langmuir isotherm fitted well with the experimental data of chitosan while the BET isotherm fitted well with the SDS-modified chitosan data. Pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used to examine the kinetic data. The experimental data was fitted well to a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The significant uptake of cutting fluid on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were demonstrated by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and heat of combustion.

  • We have prepared the porous carrier that has high capacity for immobilization of microorganisms and adsorption capacity for cation using fly ash in the previous work. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of piggery wastewater treatment in comparison with commercial carrier and conventional activated sludge process by continuous-flow fixed biofilm process in laboratory scale at the same experimental conditions to develop the biofilm process using porous fly ash carrier for wastewater treatment. As a result, the prepared fly ash carrier showed that removal efficiency of COD, TN and $NH_4{^+}-N$ items were 80%, 77% and 65%, respectively, which were higher efficiency than the commercial carrier and conventional activated sludge process. And the result of measurement for immobilized microorganisms after treatment showed higher capacity than the commercial carrier, and it was confirmed by SEM observation on fly ash carrier that the colony of microorganisms was stably formed.

  • Porous alginate-based hydrogel beads (porous ABH) have been prepared through a facile and sustainable template-assisted method using nano-calcium carbonate and nano-$CaCO_3$ as pore-directing agent for the efficient capture of methylene blue (MB). The materials were characterized by various techniques. The sorption capacities of ABH towards MB were compared with pure sodium alginate (ABH-1:0) in batch and fixed-bed column adsorption studies. The obtained adsorbent (ABH-1:3) has a higher BET surface area and a smaller average pore diameter. The maximum adsorption capacity of ABH-1:3 obtained from Langmuir model was as high as $1,426.0mg\;g^{-1}$. The kinetics strictly followed pseudo-second order rate equation and the adsorption reaction was effectively facilitated, approximately 50 minutes to achieve adsorption equilibrium, which was significantly shorter than that of ABH-1:0. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. Thomas model fitted well with the breakthrough curves and could describe the dynamic behavior of the column. More significantly, the uptake capacity of ABH-1:3 was still higher than 75% of the maximum adsorption capacity even after ten cycles, indicating that this novel adsorbent can be a promising adsorptive material for removal of MB from aqueous solution under batch and continuous systems.

  • To abate the problem of odor from restaurants, a hybrid adsorbent consisting of organic and inorganic materials was developed and evaluated using acetaldehyde as a model compound was deveioped and evaluated. Powders of activated carbon, bentonite, and calcium hydroxide were mixed and calcinated to form adsorbent structure. The surface area of the hybrid adsorbent was smaller than that of high-quality activated carbon, but its microscopic image showed that contours and pores were developed on its surface. To determine its adsorption capacity, both batch isotherm and continuous flow column experiments were performed, and these results were compared with those using commercially available activated carbon. The isotherm tests showed that the hybrid adsorbent had a capacity 40 times higher than that of the activated carbon. In addition, the column experiments revealed that breakthrough time of the hybrid adsorbent was 2.5 times longer than that of the activated carbon. These experimental results were fitted to numerical simulations by using a homogeneous surface diffusion model (HSDM); the model estimated that the hybrid adsorbent might be able to remove acetaldehyde at a concentration of 40 ppm for a 5-month period. Since various odor compounds are commonly emitted as a mixture when meat is barbecued, it is necessary to conduct a series of experiments and HSDM simulations under various conditions to obtain design parameters for a full-scale device using the hybrid adsorbent.
