  • Debugging for application Programs running in embedded Linux systems has mostly been done remotely due to the limited resources of the target systems. The gdb, which is one of the most famous debugger in Linux systems, does not support the debugging of the child processes which is created by the fork system call in local and remote environments. Therefore, by using gdb, developers can debug the application programs that have single-process structure in local and remote environments, but they cannot debug the application programs that have multi-process structures by using gdb in remote environments. Also, although developers can debug the application programs that have multi-process structures by using gdb in local environments, it needs additional and unnecessary codings. In this paper, we presents the remote debugging scheme that can be used for debugging multi-process structured applications. The proposed scheme is implemented by using the library wrapping scheme, and also uses the conventional system components such as gdb and gdbserver.

  • Since ubiquitous embedded software is sensitive to the resources and environment of target system, it should be debugged in the same environment as actual target system. However, existing tools to debug embedded software, in which access to internal signal or resources is limited, are uneconomical. In the thesis, economical and practical USB-JTAG Adapter that can use open GDB is suggested. It can remove existing limitations of environment implementation that have many difficulties in implementing an environment for remote debugging. Hence, the thesis provides economical interfacing environment that can debug ubiquitous embedded software inside remote system.

  • Debugging in distributed environments, such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which consist of sensor nodes with limited resources, is an iterative and occasionally laborious process for programmers. In sensor networks, it is not easy to find unintended bugs that arise during development and deployment, and that are due to a lack of visibility into the nodes and a dearth of effective debugging tools. Most sensor network debugging tools are not provided with effective facilities such as real-time tracing, remote debugging, or a GUI environment. In this paper, we present a hybrid debugging framework (HDF) that works on WSNs. This framework supports query-based monitoring and real-time tracing on sensor nodes. The monitoring supports commands to manage/control the deployed nodes, and provides new debug commands. To do so, we devised a debugging device called a Docking Debug-Box (D2-Box), and two program agents. In addition, we provide a scalable node monitor to enable all deployed nodes for viewing. To transmit and collect their data or information reliably, all nodes are connected using a scalable node monitor applied through the Internet. Therefore, the suggested framework in theory does not increase the network traffic for debugging on WSNs, and the traffic complexity is nearly O(1).

  • In the embedded Linux environments, developers can concurrently debug multiple processes that have parent-child relationships using multiple gdbs and gdbservers. But, it needs additional coding efforts and messy works of activating another gdbs and gdbservers for each created process, and so, it may be inefficient in the viewpoint of developers. In this paper, we propose a mgdb library and mgdbserver that supports concurrent debugging of multiple processes in the embedded Linux systems by using the library wrapping mechanism without modifying the kernel. Also, through the experimentation of concurrent debugging for multiple processes that communicate by an unnamed pipe, we show that our proposed debugging mechanism is more efficient than the preexisting mechanisms.

  • In this paper, we implement processor debugger based on OCD(On-Chip Debugger). Implemented debugger consist of software debugger that supports a functionality of symbolic debugging, OCD integrated into target processor as a function of debugging, and Interface & Control block which interfaces software debugger and OCD at high speed rates. The debugger supports c/assembly level debugging using software debugger as OCD is integrated into target processor. After OCD block is interfaced with 32bit RISC processor core and then implemented with FPGA, the verification of On-Chip Debugging System is carried out through connecting OCD and Interface & Control block, and SW debugger.

  • Most of software developers use the GNU Debugger (GDB) in order to debug code execution. The GDB supports a remote debugging environment through serial communication. However, in embedded systems, the speed is limited in the serial communication. Due to this reason, the serial communication is rarely used for the debugging purpose. To solve this problem, many embedded systems adapt the JTAG and the USB interface. This paper proposes debugging environment via USB-JTAG interface to debug the EISC processor, and introduces how the USB interface works on the GDB and how the JTAG module handles debugging packets.

  • To develop SoC program for embedded systems, a tool that can remotely debug from host system is needed. Because the existing remote debugging systems using GDB don't offer information of the SoC program execution in real-time, it is difficult to observe condition of the program execution, and also they have limited characteristics to tools and use costly adaptors. In this paper, a real-time tracking tool that can record SoC status on the nv each execution of the assigned instructions is introduced and an economical USB-JTAG adaptor is proposed. And it is shown that this tool can track the execution of a composed program in the target system based on PXA255 processor.

  • In this paper, we present a multi-task debugging environment for Qplus-T embedded-system such as internet information appliances. We will propose the structure and functions of a remote multi-task debugging environment supporting environment effective ross-development. And, we are going enhance the communication architecture between the host and target system to provide more efficient cross-development environment. The remote development toolset called Q+Esto consists to several independent support tools: an interactive shell, a remote debugger, a resource monitor, a target manager and a debug agent. Excepting a debug agent, all these support tools reside on the host systems. Using the remote multi-task debugger on the host, the developer can spawn and debug tasks on the target run-time system. It can also be attached to already-running tasks spawned from the application or from interactive shell. Application code can be viewed as C/C++ source, or as assembly-level code. It incorporates a variety of display windows for source, registers, local/global variables, stack frame, memory, event traces and so on. The target manager implements common functions that are shared by Q+Esto tools, e.g., the host-target communication, object file loading, and management of target-resident host tool´s memory pool and target system´s symbol-table, and so on. These functions are called OPEn C APIs and they greatly improve the extensibility of the Q+Esto Toolset. The Q+Esto target manager is responsible for communicating between host and target system. Also, there exist a counterpart on the target system communicating with the host target manager, which is called debug agent. Debug agent is a daemon task on real-time operating systems in the target system. It gets debugging requests from the host tools including debugger via target manager, interprets the requests, executes them and sends the results to the host.

  • When we design the control system used Programmable Logic controller(PLC), if we program a Sequential Function Chart(SFC), It is easy to understand the sequential flow of control, to maintenance the controller and to describe a program. SFC language is programmed by a single sequence, a select sequence and a parallel sequence. In a select sequence, when the select step is error, the whole process is stopped. If the error step has no connection the whole process, the loss is down when we debugging the program without stopping the whole process. Therefore, this thesis shows the efficient method of remote control for select sequence and we confirmed its feasibility through actual example.
