The performance of a newly designed wastewater treatment process equipped with an anaerobic and two intermittent aeration tanks operated alternately was investigated. During the experimental period, several types of cyclic operating schedules with different aeration and non aeration time were examined for the optimization. At all modes, the removals of organic matter and SS were highly achieved. With respect to T-N removal, however, the cycle length for aeration on/off affected the efficiencies. At the optimal operating mode, the ORP bending point indicating the disappearance of nitrate was observed. Considering the influent wastewater characteristics and cyclic operating schedules, it can be suggested that T-P removal is much more BOD/T-P ratio and/or its load dependant rather than the aeration on/off time. The results obtained from pilot-scale test showed the competitive advantage of this alternating process through an omission of nitrate recycle and operational flexibility against influent load variations when comparing with other continuous flow processes.

Batch experiments were performed to investigate the effects of volumetric mixing ratio(v/v) of two substrates, food wastes(FW) and waste activated sludge(WAS). In batch experiments, optimum mixing ratio for hydrogen production was found at $10{\sim}20$ v/v % addition of WAS. CSTR(Continuous Stirred tank reactor) was operated to investigate the hydrogen productivity and the microbial community under various HRTs and volumetric mixing ratio(v/v) of two substrates. The maximum yield of specific hydrogen production, 140 mL/g VSS, was found at HRT of 2 day and the volumetric mixing ratio of 20:80(WAS:FW). The spatial distribution of hydrogen producing bacteria was observed in anaerobic fermentative reactor using fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH) method.

The concurrent injection of cosolvent and air, a cosolvent-air (CA) flood was recently suggested for a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation technology. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the DNAPL removal mechanisms of the CA flood and to quantify mass transfer rate coefficients during CA flooding. DNAPL removal mechanisms were examined by evaluating the effects of air flow rate and DNAPL solubility and visually documented at a pore-scale. Two serial processes, immiscible displacement and dissolution, were experimentally and visually documented during CA flooding. Mass transfer rate coefficients (K) were computed from the data showing PCE saturation versus time. Results showed that CA floods exhibited higher K values than cosolvent floods without concurrent air injection. Catalytic degradation of pentachlorophenol in soil by heme and hydrogen peroxide has been hypothesized to occur through nonspecific catalytic reactions similar to those involving ligninase. The present study examines the evidence for a heme catalytic mechanism for the oxidation of organic compounds. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, heme is converted to the ferryl heme radical (Hm-$Fe^{+4{\cdot}}$), which can oxidize organic compounds, such as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). A second 5-ASA may later be oxidized by ferryl heme (Hm-$Fe^{+4}$), which reverts to the ferric heme state (Hm-$Fe^{+3}$) to complete the cycle. We believe that this catalytic cycle is involved in the degradation of hazardous pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Remediation via heme catalytic reactions of PAHs in soil from a pole yard was evaluated, and about 96% of PAHs was found to disappear within 42 days after treatment with heme and hydrogen peroxide. In addition, benzo[a]pyrene and six other PAHs were undetectable among a total of 16 PAH compounds examined. Therefore, we propose heme catalysis as a novel technology for the remediation of hazardous compounds in contaminated soil.

After kaolin clay was artificially contaminated with Co$^{2+}$ ion, the remediation characteristics were analyzed by the electrokinetic method. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and $CH_3$COOH was continuously inputted to the cathode reservoir to restrain the pH increase. Since the pH of the cathode side of the soil column was 4.0 initially and increased to only 6.5 after remediation for 43.6 hours, precipitate, Co(OH)$_2$, was not formed in the column. The effluent rate increased with the passage of time and Co$^{2+}$ removal in the column at the initial time were mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of the total amount of Co$^{2+}$ in the soil column was removed in 10 hours, 46.8% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 20.8 hours, 71.7% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 30.1 hours, and 94.6% of the total Co$^{2+}$ in 43.6 hours. Meanwhile, residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment. experiment.

In this study, Anaerobic sewage sludge in a batch reactor operating at $35^{\circ}C$ was used as the seed to investigate the effect of pretreatments of waste activated sludge and to evaluate its hydrogen production potential by anaerobic fermentation. Various pretreatments including physical, chemical and biological means were conducted to utilize for substrate. As a result, SCODcr of alkali and mechanical treatment was 15 and 12 times enhanced, compared with a supernatant of activated sludge. And SCODcr was 2 time increase after re-treatment with biological hydrolysis. Those were shown that sequential hybridized treatment of sludge by chemical & biological methods is most efficient process for sludge treatment. The pre-treatment activated sludge was tested to conform hydrogen production potential in batch experiments. When buffer solution was added to the activated sludge, hydrogen production potential increased as compare with no addition.

In our previous studies, we have isolated bacteria from BTEX-contaminated sediment, which utilized BTEX as a sole carbon source and $NO_3$-N as an electron acceptor. For the possibility of field application, we have applied co-culture of those isolates in the BTEX-contaminated soil and evaluated their biodegradation efficiencies. To investigate the relationship between the isolates and indigenous microorganism in soil, changes of microbial community structure in soil samples with respect to time were monitored. To examine this, soil samples were artificially contaminated with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene. BTEX-degrading bacteria such as Pseudomonas stutzeri strain 15(DQ 202712), Klebsiells sp. strain 20(DQ 202715) and Citrobacter sp. strain A(DQ 202713) were injected into the soil samples in the ratio of 2:1:1. Our results showed that the highest BTEX biodegradation efficiency was achieved when both BTEX and $NO_3-N$ existed simultaneously. The change in soil microbial community structure was characterized by PCR-DGGE analysis comparing the relative DGGE band intensities. The band intensities of indigenous microorganisms in the soil were reduced by injecting co-culture of the three isolates. On the contrary, the relative band intensities of the isolates were increased. Among the three isolates, Pseudomonas stutzeri strain 15 rendered the highest band intensity. This indicates that the Pseudomonas stutzeri was the dominant microbial species found in the soil samples.

The synthesis of 1,1-difluoroethane from acetylene as a function of HF/acetylene ratio, contact time and reaction temperature was studied on a fluorinated ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The fluorination of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was treated with pure HF gas at high temperature. The crystallinity, the porosity, and the acid properties of the prepared samples were examined using XRD, the nitrogen adsorption, pyridine-IR and ammonia-TPD respectively. The activity was enhanced by further fluorination of alumina. The fraction of 1,1-difluoroethane was obtained above 90% at reaction temperature of about $200^{\circ}C$. The ratio of 1,1-difluoroethane to vinylfluoride over fluorinated ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst was increased with the mole ratio of HF/acetylene and contact time, and was found to be the highest ratio at reaction temperature of $200^{\circ}C$.

The objective of this study was to decide the designing factor for remediaton of the contaminated site. The soil and ground-water samples were analyzed and hydro- geological characteristics was assayed for the survey of pollution level. Also air-permeability test and MPN(most probable number) test were conducted for selecting the designing factor. The contaminants were mainly found in north-west part of the site and were expected to move toward the south. Ex-situ technology was expected more useful than in-situ one with the results of air-permeability test saying that air permeability was relatively low. Additional microbes were expected for remediation efficiency because residual microbes were loosely populated. The choosing of the designing factor was requisite for remediation of contaminated site.

The most common soil contaminants are petroleum-based. Hydrocarbons from diesel fuel and gasoline are widespread problems, as are total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH). There are two distinct classes of soil remediation: in-situ, or on-site, and ex-situ, or off- site. On-site cleanups are often preferred because they are cheaper. On the other hand, excavating a contaminated area and transporting it to a remote site before cleaning it can often be more complete. Ex-situ remediation also has the added bonus of taking the bulk of contaminants off-site before they can spread further. In addition, in-situ situations are limited because only the topside of the soil is accessible.
