  • The program ESRAS Ver 0.5 that can assess the risk of slopes by means of fuzzy inference is developed in this paper. The results of assessment involve the degree of stability of slopes, the possible travel distance of the soil mass being failed, and anticipated loss of life and properties. With this program, vulnerable slopes can be managed most effectively and the fuzzy inference is used to express quantitatively the judgement of an expert and the uncertainty of slope stability. The fuzzy rule base is composed of an evaluation list for slope stability together with the experience of an expert. This program has been examined for 88 slopes which have been failed or shown a possibility of failure. With this examination, the standards to assess the stability of slopes can be presented and it is proven that this is particularly useful in determining the priority of investment for remedial works of slopes.

  • Since W.A. Shewhart (1931) developed the quality control method using the control chart, many theoretical and empirical works about such an analytical method have been done. However there are two major methods relating to the control chart analysis; the conventional 3 sigma control method and the warning limit method which has been suggested as a modification of the former. The conventional 3 sigma method requires to take a remedial action only when a quality characteristic is beyond the control limit (3 sigma). However, once a quality characteristic is over the control limit, searching and repairing an assignable cause requires time consuming job and high costs. Therefore if we set the warning limit between the central line and the control limit, we will be able to take remedial measures before too late. In spite of its advantage, much attention has not been paid to use the control chart with warning limit in Korean industries. The main object of this study is to examine improvement of quality and productivity when the control chart with warning limit is used.

  • Over the past decade, major advances have occurred in both understanding and practice with regard to assessment and mitigation of hazard area associated with seismically induced soil liquefaction. In this paper, assessment of liquefaction resistance of soil are reviewed from the recent researches. In addition site characteristics investigation methods and tests for seismic design and liquefaction analysis are reviewed. Finally, introduction and characteristics of remedial measures against soil liquefaction are reviewed briefly.

  • The purpose of this study was on effect of Gagamsipungtang(GGSP) which removal of fever, side effect etc. During 4months between September and December 1998 , GGSP water extract administered to the patients coming to Dept. of Pediatrics, Dongguk university Pundang Oriental Hospital on account of the symptom of fever with common cold in acute stage, and this study was conducted for 97 children (male 55, female 42). GGSP was used in children both men and women. There were 13 kinds of complications including cough, nasal obstruction, headache, nausea, anorexia, chilling and sweat etc. The distributions of remedial value were improved(62.9%) and no improved(37.6%) patients. 'Improved' standed for no fever over 2 days after GGSP used to patients. GGSP was affected in remedial values by only used without antipyretics. Side effect were diarrhea, anorexia, vomiting and so on.

  • I intended to be helpful to understand significant cause for treated patients comed to Dept of Pediatrics growth clinic in short stature of delayed growth and effect of oriental medical therapy. I studied at first 54 patients(36 men and 18 women) comed to Dept. of Pediatrics growth clinic of Dongguk Pundang Oriental Hospital and investigated characteristics, remidial value and side effect which 20 patients(1l men and 9 women) treated oriental medical therapy in short stature of delayed growth between June 1997 and October 1998. First study resulted the average was 8.37 year(chronological age), 6.96 year(bone age), 15.43 (height percentile by age), 164.2 cm(mid parental height) and the ratio of using the prescription was Bojunggunatang-derivative at first. second study resulted the distribusions of remedial values were improved(55.0%) and no improved(45.0%) patients. remedial values was affected by appetite.

  • Levels of arsenic in stream and reservoir waters affected by an abandoned gold mine were examined. The abandoned mine has been left without proper civil and remedial works preventing potential environmental hazards. Field and laboratory chemical analyses revealed that the stream waters downgradient from the mine area were severely contaminated with arsenic and furthermore the reservoir water, 2-3 km away from the mine, also contained substantial levels of As, far exceeding the Korean stream water standard. Relatively higher pH values (6.5-9.4) enhanced mobility of As and mainly sustained substantial As concentration in waters. Chemistries of the stream water, groundwater and reservoir water were dominated by two main factors including effects of mine effluent and anthropogenic agricultural activities. Considering that there has been a substantial As input to the reservoir and the reservoir water has been used for agricultural and domestic uses, immediate remedial works are essentially required.

  • Electron transfer is the major natural process governing the behavior of contaminants in soils and groundwaters. Biological degradation of contaminants, i.e., microbial transformation of hazardous compounds, is a well known irreversible electron transfer process. Although it is not well defined as a separate process, abiotic electron-transfer is also an important process for mobilizing/demobilizing inorganic contaminants in soils and groundwaters. Therefore, numerous remedial technologies have been developed on the basis of electron transfer concept. Among them,
