  • This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of the single phase switched reluctance motor based on the converter coupled FE analysis. The converter comprises a rectifier, LC filter and switching power device. A computational technique for the converter coupled FE analysis is introduced and its validity is proven by the experiment.

  • A new excitation method of switched reluctance motor drive is described in this paper. This excitation method produces reluctance torque by mutual action between two phases as well as conventional self reluctance torque due to two phase excitation at a time. In other words, the change of self inductance and mutual inductance are used to produce torque. This paper suggests the operational principle, the mechanism of torque product of switched reluctance motor with two phase excitation. The acoustic noise characteristics of two phase excitation method are described against that of conventional excitation method.

  • The pole shape. turn-on angle. and turn-off angle are important design factors that largely influence Switched Reluctance Motor' s performance when designing a switched reluctance motor. These design factors must be considered simultaneously because an independent factor restricts the improvement of the switched reluctance motor' s performance. After performing the analysis using nonlinear same characteristic finite element method that contains a operating circuit, the influence upon the torque characteristics was analyzed by the pole shape and the angles. This paper presents the most suitable design value according to input conditions and various speeds. Especially.the most suitable angles were derived from the voltage equation. and an effective design range is showed from the angles.

  • Switched Reluctance Motors have an inexpensive, intrinsic simplicity and low cost that makes them well suited to home appliance and office applications. However the motor suffering with necessity of shaft position sensor, lead to non-linearity of operations. Further, the involvement of static converters deteriorates the operational power factor. Implementation of a sensorless algorithm, can remove the need of position sensors. Also, the drive includes a compact power factor control in the input stage by implementing Zero Current Switching Quasi-Resonant Boost Technology. This paper presented, aims at optimized low line current distortion, high power factor, low cost and a shaft position sensorless Switched Reluctance Motor drive.

  • In this paper, the classical Lyapunov synthesis method for designing controllers is extended to fuzzy logic. This control technique is then applied to the design of a novel tracking controller for reluctance motor drives. The main features of the method are small rule base, simplicity of construction, and low cost. The proposed controller has been simulated for a model case. In addition, its dynamic performances have been shown to be satisfactory. Capabilities of the proposed technique in controlling the highly nonlinear systems of reluctance motors with much simplicity are also verified.

  • RM(Switched Reluctance Motor)'s Torque is generated by phase-current and inductance profile. A new analytical concept is proposed to determine the turn-off angle for maximization of the torque output. This paper describes a new method to maximization the average torque of a current control Switched Reluctance Motor. It is based on the simplified turn-off angle equation using least square method. Simulations carried out on a three-phase 6/4 pole SRM justify the algorithm is described. The suggested maximization average torque is verified by simulation in this paper.

  • The paper presents the design of a segmented type synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM) to increase its torque and power factor. The main feature of a segmented type synchronous reluctance motor is the flux barrier. Thus, the design process to find optimum value of various geometric parameters including flux barrier will be explained. Optimum value of each parameter is found where the d, q inductance difference and saliency ratio are maximized because these inductance characteristics are related to torque and power factor. Finite Element Analysis will be used to simulate motor characteristics. Analysis results of redesigned SynRM show higher saliency ratio over 10 and improved value of maximum power factor.

  • A novel segment type switched reluctance motor (SRM) as a rare-earth-less motor is proposed. The torque was increased by 40% and the radial force was decreased by 76% compared with the same size usual variable reluctance (VR) type SRM. Increasing the average torque, however, caused increasing torque ripple. In this paper we develop a 4-phase segment type SRM and show that the torque ripple can be decreased well.

  • The switched reluctance motor has high efficiency over a wide range of speed and torque. However the switched reluctance motor exhibit comparatively low efficiency in the chopped excitation which produces additional inverter losses. This paper examines the optimal efficiency operation using choppingless excitation under the changed supply voltage. The excitation is designed to produce the required torque and speed satisfying the optimal efficiency in a nonlinear switched reluctance motor. The optimal algorithm is applied to 119 operation points which are chosen over the full range of driving torque and speed. The result in this paper indicate the improved efficiency comparing to the efficiency obtained by both switched and chopped excitataions under a fixed supply voltage.

  • A simple drive circuit without position sensors for a switched reluctance motor is presented. The turn on and turn off points are determined by detecting the rate of change of the active phase current. The drive circuit consists of a current sensing resistor, RC filter, comparator, OP Amp, and OR gates. It is verified through the experiments that the switched reluctance motor with the proposed sensorless drive circuit is well operated in wide speed ranges.
