Upavasa (fasting) for health & longevity: an overview

  • Ayurveda is the science of life. It guides about the protection of health of the healthy and alleviation of ailments of diseased person. In Ayurveda Upavasa (fasting) is one among all Daivavyapashraya (spiritual) therapies and one among ten Langhana (that which produces lightness of the body) therapies. It is also stated in Ayurveda that fasting increases digestive fire and causes digestion of Ama-dosha (metabolic toxins). On religious grounds, Upavasa is a way to get closer to the almighty. Scientists have found fasting activates autophagy. Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese cell biologist won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2016 for his research on how cell recycle and renew their content, a process called autophagy. Many published studies indicate positive effects of fasting on neuroprotection and longevity.

  • Korea, China and Japan are countries located in Northeast Asia territory sharing similar natural environment. Countries are also using rice as a main diet material accompanied with vegetables, marine products and bean or fermented bean food. Yet, at the same time each country's food culture appeared as to be unique in food space due to their diverse food materials from different natural, cultural and religious background. This research is probing a way to recover subjective food culture and accomplish food environment which appropriates to modern globalized era by developing simple and economical repast tools meeting public's needs and distributing unique repast tools becomes Korean food culture and can be used in the life pattern of modernized nuclear families.

  • Alkaloid producing species of plants have long been a major component of the medicinal social and magico-religious aspects of human culture. A diverse array of biological activities has been attributed to different alkaloids including numerous members of benzylisoquinoline family of alkaloids. For biotechnological approaches of alkaloid biosynthesis in poppy family, plant regeneration protocol through somatic embryogenesis or shoot organogenesis is a first step. This paper describes the methods and applications of plant regeneration of poppy family.

  • This study was intended to find out the differences of characteristics between the married women who were participating in the voluntary activities and those who were not. Based on the review of various theories on the volunteerism, the three variable groups - demographic, psychosocial and family related- were identified as the possible factors which differentiate the characteristics of those two groups. The results were as follows 1) Significant group differences were found in the age, the last child's age, education, income, sense of health, religion, the degree of religious activities, leisure satisfaction and type of leisures. 2) Married women participating in the voluntary activities showed more sociable, higher sense of responsibility to the society and more distinct feeling of social identity. 3) Family -related variables such as family function, type of family, the degree of socialization in the family and experiences and quality of contact with successful volunteers were found to be closely related to the married women's participation in the voluntary activities.

Resilience and Adjustment of Retired Husbands and Wives (퇴직한 남편과 그 부인의 탄력성과 적응분석)

  • This study examined the effect of resilience on the adjustment of retired husbands and their wives. Data was collected from 174 retired husbands and their wives in the Seoul metropolitan area. Collected data were analyzed by mean score, percentile, paired-t tests and regression analyses. The major findings were as follows : 1. There was no significant difference in the adjustments between retired husbands and their wives. 2. Individual resilience, family resilience and social resilience had a strong impact on the adjustment of retired husbands and their wives. Self-esteem, acceptance of retirement, communication between the couple, family cohesion, and retirement policy had a significantly positive impact on the husbands' adjustment. 3. As for the adjustment of the wives, self-esteem, communication between the couple, family cohesion, acceptance of husbands' retirement and religious activity had a significantly positive impact. In summary, this study shows the importance of resilience in the adjustment of retired husbands and their wives.

  • Urban redevelopment make a short term effects without consideration about resident‘s lives. so, there are many problems and planners solve the problems to improve urban redevelopment based on resident leaded direction. The purpose of this research is to find inherent district which is character by residents. Most of them could be explained in relation to life, religious leadership, traditional cultural heritage and democratic movement. Group interviews at a field site were carried as the main methodology by people who have an intimate knowledge of the place facts. This research has implication on a cognitive and emotional community map of residents compared to the just physical and geographical map. The places and place recognition activities and movement can be a basic foundation for residents participation in improving their housing neighborhood environment.

A Study on the Clothes of Shamanistic Ritual(I) (한국무속의예 복식의 연구(I))

  • Signifying clothes can be defined as a process in which a clothes obtains a symbolic meaning by confining its use and purpose. In this paper we catagorize the process of signifying clothes that appears in the Byongkut as follows : first removing the clothes, secondly putting on the clothes, and thirdly burning off the clothes. Removing the clothes is a process of dramatic realization and clearly shows proven facts about the things that will occur in the process. Putting on the clothes is a process of falsified expression in which the interest is transferred from the person who wears the clothes to the clothes itself by the shaman's insinuation who leads an interpretation about the clothes. Buring off the clothes is a pro-cess of mystification in which the end of Byongkut is sublimated mistiriously by making the partici-pants believe with the burning that the clothes and the diseases have been curred, and therefore, the ritual is kept from spoiling. The clothes used in Byongkut that religious belief and belief system are expressed through behavior style, and that supernatural power is designed to reveal is related with the various aspects of symbolic life indicated by the clothes.

  • Carnival is an allowed chance to express ordinarily suppressed and overlooked emotions. Especially with strong meaning of daily overthrow masks, masquerades, and mask-costumes are essential for expressing methods and festival personality reasons. Carnival in modern society without losing a significant portion religion in a format suitable for the era of secularization and the transformation has been created of nothing, that is not a reflection of society is also a cultural phenomenon of its own internal social and external conditions through a variety of means can analogy cultural phenomenon is a stage. The purpose of this research comes from the carnival festivities, religious background, but the daily routine of life to know who joined his escape with the conduction of the role, going to enjoy the satire and humor, using the Dress to the eruption, which means that the form of the festival variety of analysis and with the victory of the expression of cultural phenomena and features on the festival and the dress for you should you wish to study.

  • This study attempts to expore factors which influence of stress. Date were obtained from structed interview conducted with 373 men and women who were 60 years over and living in Kyungnam. Data were analyzed through X2, ANOVA, T-TEST, FACTOR ANALYSIS, MULTIPLE REGRESSTION techniques. The results are summarized as follow: 1. Stress of old age were showed over middle level. The domains of stress showed that health problem is first, later life problem is second, trouble of communication is third, dependency problem is fourth, alienation is last(p<.001). 2. Of the variables health status, family type, economic status, self-esteem, mastery were significant with stress(p<.001). 3. Of the variables sex, religious, self-esteem, mastery were significant of used method in coping with stress. 4. The most of effective variables of stress were mastery, health status, self-esteem.

  • This paper makes a report of Shaman\`s ritual performed among Korean resiednts in Japan as socio-historical facts, and this also examines the symbolic meanings of Shamans\` costumes. The results are as follows ; 1) At the ritual of Jungsip-Wang Maji, Shamans wear Gwandae, Kunbok, Jangsam, Durumaki, and Chima-jugori. These costumes show that their wearers are priests and gods at the same time. 2) The reason why Simbang performs the ritual in different costumes at different Jaechas is that each object-god needs different costumes to represent its different character. 3) Shamans\` instruments consist of musical instruments and other instruments. Among the musical instruments are such percussions as Buk, Jing, Janggo and Sulsae. Among other insttruments are Sindo, Sanban and Yoryung. 4)Shamans think that the musical instruments have magic powers to drive out minor demons and invite gods. Sindo, Sanban and Yoryung are thought to be the symbolic instruments representing god\`s will.
