Reliability-based design of prestressed concrete girders in integral Abutment Bridges for thermal effects

  • Reliability-based design limit states and associated partial load factors provide a consistent level of design safety across bridge types and members. However, limit states in the current AASHTO LRFD have not been developed explicitly for the situation encountered by integral abutment bridges (IABs) that have unique boundary conditions and loads with inherent uncertainties. Therefore, new reliability-based limit states for IABs considering the variability of the abutment support conditions and thermal loading must be developed to achieve IAB designs that achieve the same safety level as other bridge designs. Prestressed concrete girder bridges are considered in this study and are subjected to concrete time-dependent effects (creep and shrinkage), backfill pressure, temperature fluctuation and temperature gradient. Based on the previously established database for bridge loads and resistances, reliability analyses are performed. The IAB limit states proposed herein are intended to supplement current AASHTO LRFD limit states as specified in AASHTO LRFD Table 3.4.1-1.

Dynamic Reliability Model for Stability Analysis of Armor Units on Rubble-Mound Breakwater (경사제 피복재의 안정성 해석을 위한 동력학적 신뢰성 모형)

  • A dynamic reliability model for analyzing the stability of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater is mathematically developed by using Hudson's formula and definition of single-failure mode. The probability density functions of resistance and loading functions are defined properly, the related parameters to those probability density functions are also estimated straightforwardly by the first-order analysis. It is found that probabilities of failure for the stability of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater are continuously increased as the service periods are elapsed, because of the occurrence of repeated loading of random magnitude by which the resistance may be deteriorated. In particular, the factor of safety is incorporated into the dynamic reliability model in order to evaluate the probability of failure as a function of factor of safety. It may thus be possible to take some informations for optimal design as well as managements and repairs of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater from the dynamic reliability analyses.

  • In the present work a time-dependent reliability model for a typical solar domestic hot water and heating system is developed using the method of Fault Tree Analysis and existing mathematical techniques. The reference system used in this analysis is a typical solar heating system. The system reliability structure has been identified with the aid of Fault Tree methods. In addition, a simulation of the solar system reliability has been performed employing the Monte Carlo method. In the computer simulation, failure rate data such as WASH-1400, MIL-HDBK-217B, and Green and Bourne are used as input data. These results show that the developed reliability model is capable of expressing the primary failure phenomena of the solar heating and domestic hot water system.

  • Bridge decks are one of the main structural components that are most suitable for utilizing the advantages of FRP materials due to the high strength weight ratio of FRP materials. Design codes for the design of FRP bridge decks should be established to apply FRP materials for bridge decks effectively. At present, design codes are relatively well established for the use of FRP materials as reinforcements in concrete structures. However, design codes have not yet been provided for the structures made of FRP as a main construction material. In this study, for the purpose of preparing design code provisions, reliability analyses were performed to evaluate target level of safety and serviceability on GFRP decks. Based on the results, several guidelines for the development of design codes are suggested.

  • Hydraulic breakers, the attachment devices of the excavators, refer to a machine that converts back and forth motions of pistons into energies to break objects down finely. As the use of hydraulic breakers has been steadily increasing world-wide, consumers have become more interested in not just the quality of hydraulic breakers but their reliability. This study show functions and usages of several main parts on hydraulic breakers. In addition, based on the effect of action of hydraulic breakers, FMEA was performed to figure out the major causes and manifestations of malfunctioning. As above mentioned, we analyzed reliability of hydraulic breakers by models, and the data that had been used for the analyses were obtained from malfunctioning data in the field.

  • This paper is concerned with the reliability centered maintenance (RCM) of the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) vehicle system. Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has developed the AGT vehicle system from 1999 to 2004. The provisions for a specific maintenance system including RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability & safety) of AGT vehicle system is necessary for maintaining good operation conditions. RCM is a process used to determine what must be done to ensure that any system continues to do whatever its users want it to do in its present operating conditions. Therefore, we introduce RCM in details and describe how RCM should be applied to AGT vehicle system on Gyeong-San test line. Analyses to approach RCM to AGT vehicle system are demonstrated in the seven steps that contain each main task and detailed operating conditions.

  • Claim history data of rather long period were collected to assess reliability and warranty cost analyses. The data were appropriately organized to be used for further statistical analyses. For each critical component, nonparametric statistical method was applied to obtain reliability plot. Hazard plots of the components in a subsystem or system level were also obtained. Competing risk model was assumed to obtain the performance of the subsystem or system level.

A method for static and dynamic analyses of stiffened multi-bay coupled shear walls

  • In this study an approximate method based on the continuum approach and transfer matrix method for static and dynamic analyses of stiffened multi-bay coupled shear walls is presented. In this method the whole structure is idealized as a sandwich beam. Initially the differential equation of this equivalent sandwich beam is written then shape functions for each storey is obtained by the solution of differential equations. By using boundary conditions and storey transfer matrices which are obtained by these shape functions, system modes and periods can be calculated. Reliability of the study is shown with a few examples. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB and numerical samples have been solved for demonstration of the reliability of this method. The results of the samples show the agreement between the present method and the other methods given in literature.

  • The purpose of this preliminary study was to test the validity and reliability Sexual Development Assessment Scale for Adolescents. Subjects were 579 middle school and 504 high school students in Seoul and Gyeonggido. Statistical analyses were by factor analyses, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, $x^2$ value and Cramer's V. Construct validity was composed with 10 factors on sexual Development Assessment Scale for middle school students and 12 factors for high school students. Reliability of each subscale was high and the item discrimination, $x^2$ value and Cramer's V were also meaningful.

Loss Analyses of Soft Switching Techniques for Two-transistor Forward Converter (Two-transistor 포워드 컨버터에서 소프트 스위칭 기법의 손실 분석)

  • In this paper, the loss analyses of two soft switching techniques for two-transistor forward converter are performed. The sums of snubber conduction and capacitive turn-on losses for two transistors are calculated to compare the losses of the two techniques. While the conventional soft switching technique shows the loss difference between two transistors, the proposed soft switching technique shows equal as well as lower losses In two transistors. Thus, it can be said that even thermal distribution and higher reliability can be obtained by the proposed soft switching technique.
