  • Biodiesel is technically competitive with it and offers technical advantages over conventional petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel is an environment friendly alternative liquid fuel that can be used in any diesel engine without modification. In this study, (dP/dCA)max and heat release, emission characteristics with different fuel injection timings are compared between diesel fuel and biodiesel in the D.I. diesel engine with T/C. The engine was operated at five different fuel injection timings from BTDC 6deg to 14deg at 2deg intervals and with four different loads at engine speed of 1800rpm. The experiments in a test engine showed that ranges between low and high of (dP/dCA)max got narrower, as the engine load increased, BD blend rate increased, and fuel injection timing was delayed. Cumulative heat release increased with the advanced fuel injection timing. NOX emissions decreased with the delays of fuel injection timing.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to derive solutions and prevent similar cases from occurring by analyzing the causes of cracks found in temperature cycling tests of rocket motor. Methods: By combining the results of the current state confirmation test, non-destructive test, domestic and foreign rocket motor comparison test, cutting test, and adhesion test according to the number of times to apply mold release agent, a Cause and Effect Diagram analysis was performed to derive the cause of cracks. Results: Through this study, 26 factors that could cause cracking in rocket motors during temperature cycling tests were identified. Through various additional test results, a total of five causes were identified, including chemical and structural design of the joint between the propellant and stress relief insert, omission of procedure in the manufacturing procedures, natural aging due to temperature, and load accumulation due to temperature changes. The fundamental cause was confirmed to be insufficient consideration of the release properties of the propellant and stress relief insert. Conclusion: During the design process, it was confirmed that this could be solved by structurally or chemically designing the insert so that it does not combine with the propellant, or by applying a mold release agent during the manufacturing process.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of premixing condition on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a HCCI diesel engine. To form homogeneous charge before intake manifold, the premixed fuel is injected into premixed tank by GDI injection system and the premixed fuel is ignited by direct injected diesel fuel. But in the case of high intake air temperature, premixed fuel is auto-ignited before diesel combustion and soot emission is increased. In the case of light load condition, the BSFC is improved by intake air heating because increased air temperature promoted the combustion of premixed mixture. NOx and smoke concentration of exhaust emissions are reduced compared to conventional diesel engine. The combustion characteristics of the HCCI diesel engine such as combustion pressure, rate of heat release, and exhaust emission characteristics are discussed.

  • To find out an adequate failure criterion in two-dimensional linear elastic crack problems, finite element programs, SED, which determine stress intensity factors $K_I, K_{II}$, crack angle and peak load by the minimum strain energy density failure criterion were developed. In this program, the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singular elements with 6 nodes were used. The results of SED were compared with the results of those which followed by the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and those by the maximum energy release rate criteria and those by Jenq and Shah`s experiments of the same geometry and material properties. The maximum energy release rate criteria were better close to those of the Jenq and Shah`s experiments than the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and the minimum strain energy density criteria.

  • In this paper, the solution of a semi-infinite plane with one circular hole is presented. This solution is induced by repeatedly superposing the solution of an infinite plane with one circular hole and that of a semi-infinite plane without holes to cancel out the stresses arising on both boundaries. This procedure is carried out until the stresses arising on both boundaries converge. This method does not require complicated calculation procedures as does the method using stress functions defined in a bipolar coordinate system. Some numerical results are shown by graphical representations.

  • This study was analyzed dynamically by finite element method about the results of experiments which the double cantilever beam specimens with two kinds of materials were applied by impact load. And they were compared with each other as the simulation data applied onto impact velocities of 6.4 and 18.47 m/s. The crack energy release rate, force and displacement of block were calculated numerically by computer. As the numerical simulation data of specimen analyzed in this study approached the experimental data, the inspection of this specimen model suggested in this paper could be reasonable for the numerical simulation.

  • As one of the mission payloads to be verified through the cube satellite mission of Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project (STEP Cube Lab), we developed a hinge driving separation nut-type holding and releasing mechanism. The mechanism offers advantages, such as a large holding capacity and negligible induced shock, although its activation principle is based on a nylon cable cutting mechanism triggered by a nichrome burn wire generally used for cube satellite applications for the purpose of holding and releasing onboard appendages owing to its simplicity and low cost. The basic characteristics of the mechanism have been measured through a release function test, static load test under qualification temperature limits, and shock measurement test. In addition, the structural safety and operational functionality of the mechanism module under launch and on-orbit environments have been successfully demonstrated through a vibration test and thermal vacuum test.

  • R-curve based on the size effect law previously developed for geometrically similar specimens (geometry type III) is extended to geometries with variable depth (geometry type I) as well as with variable notch (geometry type II), where the R-curve is defined as the envelope of the family of critical strain energy release rates from specimens of different sizes. The results show that the extended R-curve for type I tends to be the same for different specimen configurations, while it is greatly dependent on specimen geometry in terms of the initial crack length. Furthermore, the predicted load-deflection responses from the suggested R-curve are found to agree well with the testing results on concrete and rock materials. Besides, maximum loads for type II specimen are predicted well from the extended R-curve.

  • As a preliminary study to evaluate the reliability of the calculation method of fire load for residential furniture combustibles, the present study estimates the fire load considering the volume data obtained by the 3D geometrical information of combustibles and material properties based on the literature survey and sample burning test. A kitchen sink cabinet, couch and workstation were investigated for estimating its fire load and real fire test have been performed to measure total energy released from the combustibles. Based on total energy measured from real fire test, the relative error of the estimated fire load due to literature survey and measured material properties showed 6~120% and less than 20%, respectively. It shows that the estimation error of fire load are greatly affected by its material properties as well as geometrical information of combustibles and the present study will be able to contribute to accurate estimation of fire load.

  • In this paper, the modified singular fracture process zone (S-FPZ) model is proposed to consider variation of a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and crack closure stress (CCS) versus crack opening displacement (COD) relationship in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the estimated fracture energy of experimental results. The analysis results of the experimental data shows that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. But the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. Until 25 mm crack extension, the strain energy release rate is a constant minimum value, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for an large size specimen. The fracture criterion remains the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-tracking and micro-crack localizing behaviors of concrete.
