Modification of Urea Formaldehyde Resin with Pyrolytic Oil on Particleboard

  • Urea formaldehyde resins are widely used in the manufacturing of wood composite and their usage is always combined with release of formaldehyde characterized to be hazardous to health during and after the manufacturing of the products. This study investigates the effectiveness of wood-based adhesive from oil of pyrolysed Triplochiton scleroxylon sawdust for the production of composite board. The wood-derived Pyrolytic Oil (PyO) was blended with Urea Formaldehyde (UF) resin to formed Pyrolytic Oil-Urea Formaldehyde (PyOUF). The obtained PyOUF called Wood-Based Adhesives at four blends and control (UF) viz; 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 1:3 were further employed to prepare the composite board and test for their bonding strength by physical (water absorption-WA and thickness swelling-Th.S) and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity-MOE, modulus of rupture-MOR, and impact bending-IB). Data obtained was analysed using analysis of variance at α 0.05. The result of analysis of variance conducted on physical properties show significant difference (p≤0.05) between the WA values obtained when testing the different blending proportion of PyOUF and likewise between 2 and 24 h of immersion. PyOUF had significant effect (p≤0.05) on Th. S for 24 h but no significant different (p>0.05) for the 2 h period of soaking. The analysis of variance on mechanical properties of the composite board (MOE, MOR, and IB) show significance differences (p≤0.05) between the strength values obtained when testing the different ratios of PyO with UF. PyO content influenced the properties of the boards and it is evident that PyO can be used in the manufacture of composite board.

Effect of caffeine on the antibacterial activity of Lactobacillus casei: caffeine and antibacterial activity of L. casei

  • Coffee is a popular beverage worldwide, and the scale of consumption is growing rapidly. Many studies have shown that increased coffee consumption has various effects on human health, including beneficial effects on liver diseases, clinical type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson's disease. However, the influences of coffee or caffeine (a component of coffee) on the gut microbiota have not been examined in detail. Here, we tested whether caffeine could alter the antimicrobial activity of L. casei against E. coli. Interestingly, we found that treatment with 0.3 mg/mL caffeine increased the antimicrobial activity of L. casei against E. coli. This activity was not associated with the release of lactic acid but did appear to be related to a heat-labile factor present in the L. casei culture supernatant. Our analyses suggest that the putative antimicrobial factor found in the culture supernatant of L. casei treated with caffeine may be bacteriocin. Taken together, our results suggest that caffeine, which is an ingredient of coffee, increases the antimicrobial activity of L. casei against E. coli through the enhanced production of bacteriocin. These findings also suggest that coffee consumption affects the ability of beneficial bacteria to decrease pathogenic bacteria and/or prevent the progression of bacterial infection-associated diseases in the gut.

Effects of Mancozeb on the Activities of Murine Peritoneal Macrophages In Vitro and Ex Vivo

  • Mancozeb (MCZ) is known to have detrimental effects on the reproductive system, but the toxicity of MCZ on immune responses has not been systematically investigated. We investigated the effects of MCZ exposure on the activities of murine peritoneal macrophages through evaluation of MCZ-induced alteration of nitric oxide (NO) production and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}(TNF-\alpha)$ synthesis. Macrophages were examined ex vivo from mice orally treated with various doses of MCZ for 5 consecutive days per week for 4 weeks (subacute exposure, 250, 1000, 1500 mg/kg/day) followed by culture for 2 $(TNF-{\alpha})$ or 3 days (NO) in the presence of LPS plus $IFN-{\gamma}$. Macrophages from naive mice were also cultured with various concentrations of MCZ (0.05, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 ${\mu}g//mIL$ in the presence of LPS plus $IFN-{\gamma}$ for 2 $(TNF-{\alpha})$ or 3 days (NO) in vitro. NO production was decreased with the in vitro exposure to all concentrations of MCZ. However, the amount of NO production by peritoneal macrophages from MCZ-subacutely exposed mice was increased in comparision with that of control group. In vitro, MCZ suppressed $(TNF-\alpha)$ secretion with significant reduction at 2 ${\mu}g/mL$ MCZ. Conversely, $(TNF-{\alpha})$ release was enhanced ex vivo. This study provides the substantial evidence on MCZ-induced alternation in macrophage activity. In order to clearly understand the contrasting effect of MCZ on peritoneal macrophage activity, it is necessary to further investigate the influence of major metabolite of MCZ (ETU) exposure on the NO production and $(TNF-{\alpha})$ synthesis.

틸라피아 배대동맥의 아드레날린성 반응의 특성 (The characteristics of adrenergic responses in tilapis dorsal aorta)

  • 경골어류의 혈관평활근에 대한 adrenaline성 조절기작을 규명의 일환으로 틸라피아의 배대동맥을 사용하여 Adrenergic agonist의 효과와 그 매개에 관여하는 수용체의 subtype에 대한 연구를 하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. Epinephrine, norepinephrine, phenylephrine, clonidine 및 methoxamine은 tilapia의 배대동맥에 대하여 농도의존적인 혈관수축효과만을 나타내었으며, 효력은 epinephrine, norepinephrine, phenylnephrine, clonidine, methoxamine의 순이었으며, 이들 수축반응은 혈관내피세포의 존재유무에 영향을 받지 않았다. 2. Epinephrine, norepinephrine, phenylephrine 및 clonidine 의 농도의존적인 혈관수축반응곡선은 선택적인 $\alpha_2$-adrenergic 수용체 길항제인 yohimbine의 농도가 증가함에 따라 오른쪽으로 평행이동 되었으며, epinephrine과 norepinephrine은 선택적인 $\alpha_1$-수용체 길항제인 prazosin의 농도가 증가함에 따라 오른쪽으로 평행이동되었다. 3. Epinephrine과 norepinephrine의 혈관수축반응은 calcium제거 생리적 완충용액에서는 각각 약 41%, 51% 소실되었며, calcium 유입차단제인 verapamil에 의해서도 거의 유사한 경향을 보였다. 이상의 실험결과들을 종합하면 Catecholamine류는 수축효과만을 나타내었으며 혈관내피세포 존재유무와는 무관하였다. 이러한 수축작용은 $\alpha_1$- 및 $\alpha_2$-adrenergic receptor가 모두 매개하였으며 voltage dependent $Ca^{2+}$ channel을 통하여 유입된 세포외액의 $Ca^{2+}$과 세포내 $Ca^{2+}$의해 일어난다고 사료된다.

감마선 조사가 쇠고기의 연도개선에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Improvement of Beef Tenderness)

  • 감마선 조사가 쇠고기의 연도개선에 미치는 효과를 조사하기 위하여 도축 직후 쇠고기에 감마선을 조사시켜 전단력의 변화 및 근육의 미세구조를 관찰하였다. 감마선이 조사된 쇠고기는 최고 전단력치에 도달하는 시간이 감마선 조사선량이 증가함에 따라 단축되었다. 감마선 조사가 근육의 초미세구조에 작용하여 근절의 단축을 지연시켰고, Z-line의 수축을 유도하였다. 또한 감마선이 조사된 쇠고기에서 근속과 perimysium의 파괴는 감마선 비조사구에 비해 더 빨리 진행되는 것이 관찰되었다. 결론적으로 감마선 조사는 쇠고기의 사후경직에 도달하는 시간을 단축시키고, 연도개선 효과에 유효한 것으로 사료된다.

Effect of Chlorination on Removal of Cyanobacterial Microcystins

  • The effective removal of microcystins by chlorination was investigated on a laboratory scale. With an initial chl.a concentration of more than 1,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ℓ, the required chlorine dose for the effective removal of microcystins from the raw water was more than 8.0 mg/ℓ. Whereas, a chlorine dose of 3.0 mg/ℓcould effectively remove microcystins from raw water containing a chl.a concentration of less than 1,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ℓ. The microcystin removal was more effective below pH 8.0, plus the optimum pH range was unrelated to the concentration of toxic algal material. Although chlorination is one of the most effective methods for reducing the toxin from blue-green algae, it causes cell lysis and toxin release. However, it was demonstrated that the released cell lysates and toxins could be effectively removed by a higher dose of the oxidant. The highest removal efficiency of dissolved microcystins(initial concentration: 280 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$\^$-1/) was with a chlorine dose of 5.0 mg/ℓ.

Initiating Events Study of the First Extraction Cycle Process in a Model Reprocessing Plant

  • Background: Definition and grouping of initiating events (IEs) are important basics for probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). An IE in a spent fuel reprocessing plant (SFRP) is an event that probably leads to the release of dangerous material to jeopardize workers, public and environment. The main difference between SFRPs and nuclear power plants (NPPs) is that hazard materials spread diffusely in a SFRP and radioactive material is just one kind of hazard material. Materials and Methods: Since the research on IEs for NPPs is in-depth around the world, there are several general methods to identify IEs: reference of lists in existence, review of experience feedback, qualitative analysis method, and deductive analysis method. While failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is an important qualitative analysis method, master logic diagram (MLD) method is the deductive analysis method. IE identification in SFRPs should be consulted with the experience of NPPs, however the differences between SFRPs and NPPs should be considered seriously. Results and Discussion: The plutonium uranium reduction extraction (Purex) process is adopted by the technics in a model reprocessing plant. The first extraction cycle (FEC) is the pivotal process in the Purex process. Whether the FEC can function safely and steadily would directly influence the production process of the whole plant-production quality. Important facilities of the FEC are installed in the equipment cells (ECs). In this work, IEs in the FEC process were identified and categorized by FMEA and MLD two methods, based on the fact that ECs are containments in the plant. Conclusion: The results show that only two ECs in the FEC do not need to be concerned particularly with safety problems, and criticality, fire and red oil explosion are IEs which should be emphatically analyzed. The results are accordant with the references.

Adsorption of residual gases on carbon nanotubes and their field emission properties

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have long been reported as an ideal material due to their excellent electrical conductivity and chemical and mechanical stability as well as their high aspect ratios for field emission devices. CNT emitters made by screen printing the organic binder-based CNT paste may act as a source to release gases inside a vacuum panel. These residual gases may cause a catastrophic damage by electrical arcing or ion bombardment to the vacuum microelectronic devices and may change their physical or electrical properties by adsorbing on the CNT emitter surface. In this study, we analyzed the composition of residual gases inside the vacuum-sealed panel by residual gas analyzer (RGA), investigating the effects of individual gases of different kinds at several pressures on the field emission characteristics of CNT emitters. The residual gases included $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2O$, $C_2H_6$, and Ar. Effect of residual gases on the field emission was studied by observing the variation of the pulse voltages with the duty ratio of3.3% to keep the constant emission current of $28{\mu}A$. Each gas species was introduced to a vacuum chamber up to three different pressures ($5\times10^{-7}$, $5\times10^{-6}$, and $5\times10^{-5}$ torr) each for 1 h while electron emission was continued. The three different pressure regions were separated by keeping a high vacuum of $\sim10^{-8}$ torr for a 1 h. The emission was terminated 6 h after the third gas exposure was completed. Field emission characteristics under residual gases will be discussed in terms of their adsorption and desorption on the surface of CNTs and the resultant change of work function.

수축저감제의 종류 및 혼입률에 따른 변형경화형 시멘트복합체의 역학적 특성 (Effects of Shrinkage Reducing Agent (SRA) Type and Content on Mechanical Properties of Strain Hardening Cement Composite (SHCC))

  • 본 연구는 두 종류의 수축저감제를 혼입한 변형경화형 시멘트 복합체(SHCC)의 압축, 인장 및 휨 특성을 평가하기 위하여 계획되었으며, 재령과 수축저감제의 종류 및 혼입률을 변수로 진행되었다. SHCC는 설계기준압축강도 50 MPa이며, 섬유는 PVA 섬유를 2.2% 혼입하였다. 배합에 혼입된 수축저감제는 상변이 물질로 수화현상으로 발생되는 열을 흡수 또는 방출하여 급격한 수축 및 팽창을 제어하는 물질이다. 수축저감제의 혼입에 대한 영향은 선변형 길이변화 실험과 압축, 인장 및 휨 성능의 측면에서 평가되었으며, 수축저감제를 혼입할 경우 초기 재령에서의 수축량이 감소되었다. 또한 수축저감제를 혼입함에 따라 균열 분산 성능과 인장 및 휨 성능이 개선되었다.

교근부 보툴리눔 A형 독소(Botulinum Toxin Type A) 주사가 쥐의 턱뼈 성장에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Botulinum Toxin Type A Injection into Masseter Muscle on the Jaw Growth in Rats)

  • Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has a local effect at the neuromuscular junction by blocking acetylcholine release and thus causing paralysis and atrophy of the affected muscles. In dentistry, Botulinum toxin type A(BTX-A) is used for the treatment of masseteric hypertrophy, temporomandibular disorder, and severe bruxism related neurologic disorder. We hypothesized that the muscle atrophy after BTX-A injection into masseter muscle in growing rats, could affect the jaw growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the BTX-A injected into the masseter muscle on the jaw growth in rats. Rats were divided into four groups(group 1; control group, group 2; saline injection group, group 3; BTX-A injection group, group 4; baseline control group). Group 4 was sacrificed at the beginning of the experiment to provide baseline values of jaw measurements. The weight, length and width of jaw in those groups were measured every weeks. This study reported that the mandibular body length, condylar length, coronoid process length, anterior region height, coronoid process height and condylar height of the jaw in BTX-A injection group were shorter than those of the control and saline injection groups(P<0.05). In conclusion, BTX-A injected into the masseter muscle may affect the undergrowth of the jaw in rats.
