Immediate Effects of Various Contract-Relax Techniques on the Peck Force and Range of Motion of Knee Extension -A Pilot Study- (수축-이완 기법 방법에 다른 최대 힘과 무릎관절 가동 범위에 미치는 즉각적인 효과 비교 -예비연구-)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the immediate effects of various contract-relax (CR) techniques on the peck force and passive range of motion (ROM) of knee extension. Methods: This study recruited 17 adult males and females who obtained below $90^{\circ}$ in straight leg raising. The subjects randomly performed one of three different CR techniques (direct CR, indirect CR, and modified CR) on the right knee extension four times per day for three days. The subjects' peck force during each CR and their passive knee extension on the hip at a $90^{\circ}$ flexed position before and after each CR were measured. Results: The peck force was significantly higher in the direct and modified CR than in the indirect CR. The ROM in the passive knee extension significantly increased after direct and indirect CR. Comparing between each CR, the passive knee extension range was significantly more improved in the direct and indirect CR than in the modified CR. Conclusion: Direct and indirect CR are more effective than modified CR in the ROM of passive knee extension. The study results suggest that the modified CR did not have the same effect on the ROM of the knee extension as the direct and indirect CR and that further research is needed to recruit more subjects and to determine the effects on different muscles after modified CR.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to compare the immediate effect of hamstring stretching techniques of static stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) hold-relax and PNF irradiation on the hamstring muscle. Design: Three-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Fifty-one subjects with shortened hamstrings were randomly assigned to the static stretching group (n=17), PNF hold-relax group (n=17), and the PNF irradiation group (n=17). All subjects performed an active knee extension (AKE) test to assess for the lower extremity with a shortened hamstring. The static stretching group performed stretches by lifting their leg to the maximum extent (3 times, 30 seconds). The PNF hold-relax group performed maximal isometric contraction against the experimenter's resistance (3 times, 10 seconds). The PNF irradiation group performed maximum isometric contraction against the experimenter's resistance toward the direction of the body (5 times, 5 seconds). The pre and post-tests measured range of motion (ROM), pressure pain thresholds (PPT) and muscle tone. Results: There were significant differences in ROM and PPT between pre and post intervention in each group (p<0.05). There was a significant difference only in the ROM among groups (p<0.05). Post-hoc analysis showed that the changes in ROM occurred in the order of the PNF hold-relax group, static stretching group and PNF irradiation group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the PNF irradiation technique may improve ROM and may be used to improve ROM similar to other stretching techniques. Therefore, the PNF irradiation technique could be included in stretching programs and can be used as a suitable stretching method depending on the situation.

The Effect of Contract-Relax with Agonist Contraction on Hamstring Extensibility in Normal Subjects (무릎굽힘근의 신장성에 대한 수축-이완 기술의 효과)

  • Thirty healthy adults aged 20 to 29 with no history of musculoskeletal or neurogenic disorder volunteered for this study. The contract-relax with agonist contration(CRAC) was applied to the right hamstring muscles with the subject in the supine position. Each hamstring group was stretched on three sucessive days with several repetitions of the technique lasting 1min, 3min, and 5min. respectively. Hamstring extensibility at the knee(ROM) was measured before and after stretching using on electronic digital inclinometer(EDI). The results, namely the increase in ROM, were analysed using one-way repeated ANOVA at p<0.05. The differences were not significant. Possible factors influencing the results are excessive sensitibility of the measuring instrument, the psychological and physical status of the subjects, and the level of muscle fatigue. The mean increases in ROM were 3.0 at 1min., 2.6 at 3min, and 2.1 at 5min. Inclusion of a control group would have further defined the effects of the stretching technique.

Effects of Three-Week Contract-Relax Interventions with and without Reinforcement Using Temporal Summation for Flexibility and Balance Ability in Young People with Hamstring Shortening (공간적 가중을 이용한 강화 유무에 따른 3주간 수축-이완 중재가 넙다리뒤근 단축 대상자의 유연성과 균형능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of three-week contract-and-relax (CR) interventions with and without reinforcement using temporal summation for flexibility and dynamic balance ability in young people with hamstring shortening. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 female college students with hamstring shortening. The participants were divided equally into two groups using stratified randomization: the CR group (CRG) and the CR with reinforcement group (CRRG). All interventions were applied three times a week for three weeks. The passive straight leg raise (PSLR) test and functional reaching test (FRT) were conducted on each participant before and after the three-week intervention. Results: In both groups, PSLR and FRT improved significantly after the three-week intervention compared to before intervention (p < 0.01). The amount of change in PSLR after the three-week intervention was significantly higher in CRRG than in CRG (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Three-week CR interventions with and without reinforcement were effective in improving PSLR and FRT. To improve hamstring shortening, CR intervention with reinforcement may be more useful than CR intervention without reinforcement.

Effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Relaxation Techniques on Hamstring Flexibility and Vertical Jump Performance (고유수용성신경근촉진법 이완기법이 뒤넙다리근 유연성과 점프수행력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) relaxation technique (hold relax; HR, contract relax; CR) and static stretch (SS) on hamstring flexibility and vertical jump performance in healthy adults over a four-week period. Methods: Twenty-four healthy adults volunteered to participate in PNF and static stretch sessions. The subjects were divided into three groups as follows: 8 subjects in the SS group, 8 subjects in the HR group, and 8 subjects in the CR group. In the HR and CR groups, contractions lasted 15 seconds per trial and consisted of 5 sets of 15 seconds of hamstring contraction immediately followed by 15 seconds of passive static hamstring stretching. For the static group, the participants were asked to stretch by hanging a leg over a table for 30 seconds. Subjects in all groups performed the exercises three days per week for 4 weeks. The active straight leg raising (ASLR) test, active knee extension (AKE) test, and vertical jump test were performed before the intervention and after 1, 2, and 4 weeks. Results: The SS, HR, and CR techniques effected positive improvement in hamstring flexibility and vertical jump performances but neither of the stretching methods had any statistically significant different effects according to group, although there were interactions (between group and time) in the ALSR group from 1 week to 2 week and in the AKE test from pretest to 1 week. Conclusion: Based on the results of the current study, SS, HR, and CR were shown to affect hamstring flexibility and vertical jump performance in healthy adults. In particular, it was determined that within a short period, hamstring flexibility could be attributed more to CR than to SS.

  • 본 연구에서는 아로마 화장품의 생리ㆍ심리적 효과를 살펴보았다. 20-30대 건강한 성인 여자를 상으로 스트레스 부하 후 아로마 화장품 사용과 무사용의 두 조건에서 중추 신경계의 뇌파(EEG) 중 Alpha파의 주파수 변동리듬(l/f), 자율신경계(ECG, SKT, GSR) 및 주관적 기분감 평가(POMS) 를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 우전두부의 U파 변동리듬계수의 크기와 변동리듬 경사도를 이용한 쾌적도는 무사용에 비해 아로마 화장품 사용에서 시간이 경과됨에 따라 유의하게 증가하였다(p<0.05). SKT에서는 조건간 유의차는 나타나지 않았으나 GSR에서는 무사용에 비해 아로마 화장풍 사용 후 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.1). 주관적 기분감 평가(POMS)에서는 무사용에 비해 아로마 화장품 사용 후 성냄, 혼란 항목의 득점이 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.1). 이상의 결과로부터 스트레스 부하 후 사용한 아로마 화장품의 스트레스 해소 경향 즉 Relax, 진정 효과가 확인되었다.

Comparison of the Duration of Hamstring Flexibility Improvement Following Termination of Modified Dynamic Stretching, Hold-Relax, and Static Stretching

  • The aim of this study was to compare the duration of hamstring flexibility improvement after 3 stretching interventions in people with limited hamstring flexibility. Twenty-two subjects (12 men, 10 women) with limited hamstring flexibility of the dominant leg received 3 stretching interventions- modified dynamic stretching (MDS), hold-relax (HR), and static stretching (SS)-in a random order. All the subjects received all 3 interventions at intervals of at least 24 hours to minimize any carry-over effect. Modified dynamic stretching was applied as a closed kinetic chain exercise in the supine position by using the sling suspension system (Redcord Trainer(R)). The SS and HR interventions were individually performed in the straight leg raising (SLR) position, and all 3 interventions were performed for 3 minutes. Outcome measures included passive knee extension (PKE) measurements. Five post-test measurements were recorded for all subjects at 3, 6, 9, 15, and 30 minutes after the interventions. MDS was associated with a significant increase in knee extension range of motion even at 30 minutes post-treatment. In contrast, the HR and SS stretching methods showed increased hamstring flexibility for only 6 minutes post-treatment. Improvements in the range of motion of knee extension (indicating enhancement in hamstring flexibility) with MDS were maintained longer than those with the HR and SS interventions. Therefore, MDS may be more effective than the other interventions for maintaining hamstring flexibility.

Effects of Sunghyangchungisan on contractile Reactivity of Isolated Rabbit Carotid Artery (성향정기산(星香正氣散)이 가토(家?)의 경동맥(頸動脈) 평활근(平滑筋) 긴장도(緊張度) 조절(調節)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of Sunghyangchungisan (SHCS) on the regulation of vascular tone. Vascular rings isolated from rabbit carotid artery were myographed isometrically in isolated organ baths and the effect of SHCS on contractile activities were determined. SHCS relaxed the arterial rings which were pre-contracted by phenylephrine(PE). The responses to SHCS were partially dose-dependent at concentrations lower than 0.5 mg/ml. When SHCS was applied prior to the exposure to PE, it inhibited the PE-induced contraction by a similar magnitude which was comparable to the relaxation of pre-contracted arterial rings. Washout of SHCS after observing its relaxant effect resulted in a full recovery of PE-induced contractions, indicating that the action mechanism is reversible. The observation that SHCS did not change the $ED_{50}$ of PE on its dose-response curve ruled out the possible interaction of SHCS and ${\alpha}-receptor$. The relaxant effect of SHCS was not affected by removal of endothelium, and pretreatment of the arterial rings with methylene blue or nitro-L-arginine. This results suggest that the action of SHCS is not mediated by endothelium nor soluble guanylate cyclase. SHCS relaxed high $K^{+}-induced$ contractions as well, whereas it failed to relax phorbol ester-induced contractions. When contraction was induced by additive application of $Ca^{2+}$ in arterial rings which were pre-depolarized by high $K^+$ in a $Ca^{2+}-free$ solution, the relaxant effect of SHCS was attenuated by increasing the $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. SHCS, when applied to the arterial rings pre-contracted by PE and then relaxed by nifedipine, a $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, did not show additive relaxation. From above results, it is suggested that SHCS relax PE-induced contraction of rabbit carotid artery in an endothelium-independent manner, and inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ influx may contribute to the underling mechanism.

  • The design of the healing space provides people with tranquility and relaxation. It restores the tired body and provides the resilience of life. We have established the importance and value of healing through the meaning of healing and foreign cases. that humans come from nature and return to nature I think it is extremely inevitable, and while living, They set their goal and finish it gradually. Then they reach the goal. You can enjoy the effect of healing by creating an atmosphere of nature that comes from nature and living in it. The use of wood inside the building is the most comfortable healing condition, and as you can see from the case of Japan, The building of Sunny Hills made of wood outside reminds me of a magpies house. Indoor desk or book case made of wood make, warmer at mosphere, and the effect of healing becomes even greater if you take the plants. In the ceiling, if you paint pictures of clouds, trees, sun, etc., and apply blue or pink color that makes you relax, then the effect of healing is doubled. Through this study, I could forming living space being in touch with nature and using natural materials which is basic of healing an bring the effect of healing.

Effects of PNF Contract-Relax Technique, Myofascial Release, and Massage Guns on Hamstring Flexibility and Pressure Pain Threshold in Subjects with Hamstring Shortening (PNF 수축-이완 기법, 근막이완기법, 마사지건이 넙다리뒤근 단축 대상자의 유연성 및 압통에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aims to compare hamstring flexibility and pressure pain threshold (PPT) after an intervention with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation contract-relax (PNF CR) technique, myofascial release (MFR), and a massage gun (MG), as well as to verify the effectiveness of the MG. Methods: This study recruited 36 participants (22 males and 14 females) with shortening of less than 70 degrees upon a straight leg raise (SLR) test, and they were randomly assigned to one of the PNF, MG, and MFR groups, each of which underwent its own protocol for 30 minutes. Flexibility of the hamstring was measured after the intervention using the active and passive knee extension (AKE and PKE) test, the sit and reach test, and PPT. Results: The AKE and PKE angles significantly decreased, as well as significantly increased in flexibility when each of the PNF, MFR, and MG interventions was performed (p<0.05). In addition, there was no significant difference among groups. However, according to the Cohen's D effect size, the MG demonstrated the largest effect size in AKE (d = 1.41) and PNF demonstrated the largest effect size in PKE (d = 1.66) and flexibility (d = 0.63). Conclusion: All interventions used in our study are effective in increasing hamstring flexibility. Based on the Cohen's D effect size, an MG is beneficial to increase the AKE, whereas PNF CR technique is recommended for increasing PKE and flexibility.
