  • Permeable reactive barriers used for groundwater treatment require proper estimation of the reactive material behavior regarding the emplacement method. This study evaluates the dry emplacement of zeolite (clinoptilolite) to be used as a reactive material in the barrier by carrying out several geotechnical laboratory tests. Dry zeolite samples, exhibited higher wetting-induced compression strains at the higher vertical stresses, up to 12% at 400 kN/m2. The swelling potential was observed to be limited with a 3.5 swell index and less than 1% free swelling strain. Direct shear tests revealed that inundation reduces the shear strength of a dry zeolite column by a maximum of 10%. Falling head permeability tests indicate decreasing permeability values with increasing the vertical effective stress. Regarding self-loading and inundation, the porosity along the zeolite column was calculated using a proposed 1D numerical model to predict the permeability with depth considering the laboratory tests. The calculated discharge efficiency was significantly decreased with depth and less than 2% relative to the top for barrier depths deeper than 20 m. Finally, the importance of directional dependence in the permeability of the zeolite medium for calibrating 2D finite element flow analysis was highlighted by bench-scale tests performed under 2D flow conditions.

  • With many consumers being exposed to news via social media platforms, news organizations are challenged to attract visitors and generate revenue during visits to their websites. They therefore need detailed information on how to write articles and headlines to increase visitors' engagement with the content to drive advertising revenues. For those news organizations whose business model depends mainly on advertisements, rather than subscriptions, it is particularly crucial to understand what makes the website attractive to their visitors, what drives users to stay on the website, and what factors affect a user's exit decision. The current research examines individual news consumers' choices to find patterns of increase or decrease in user engagement relative to a variety of topics, as well as to the mood or tone of the content. Using clickstream data from a major news organization, the authors develop a user-level dynamic model of clickstream behavior that takes into account the content of both headlines and stories that visitors read. The authors find that readers appear to exhibit state dependence in the tone of the articles that they read. They also show how the topics expressed in headlines can affect the amount of content readers consume when visiting the news organization to a much larger degree than the topics expressed in the content of the article. Online publishers can make use of such findings to present visitors with content that is likely to maintain and/or increase their engagement and consequently drive advertising revenue.

  • The model developed in this study holds significant importance in predicting carbon emissions in maritime transport. By utilizing ship data and EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) guidelines, the model presents a highly accurate prediction tool, providing a solid foundation for maximizing operational efficiency and effectively managing carbon emissions in ship operations. The model's accuracy was demonstrated by an R2 score of 0.95 and a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 1.4%. Through SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) and Partial Dependence Plots (PDP), it was identified that Speed Over Ground and relative wind speed are the most significant variables, both showing a positive correlation with increased CO2 emissions. Additionally, environmental factors such as exceeding an average draft of 22(m), a Leeway over 5°, and a current angle exceeding 200° were found to increase emissions significantly. Specific ranges of wind and swell wave angles also notably affected emissions. Conversely, lower pitch, roll, and rudder angle were associated with reduced emissions, indicating that stable ship operation enhances efficiency.

  • The dielectric-spectroscopic and ac conductivity studies firstly carried out on layered manganese doped Sodium Lithium Trititanates ($Na_{1.9}Li_{0.1}Ti_3O_7$). The dependence of loss tangent (Tan$\delta$), relative permittivity ($\varepsilon_r$) and ac conductivity ($\sigma_{ac}$) in temperature range 373-723K and frequency range 100Hz-1MHz studied on doped derivatives. Various conduction mechanisms are involved during temperature range of study like electronic hopping conduction in lowest temperature region, for MSLT-1 and MSLT-2. The hindered interlayer ionic conduction exists with electronic hopping conduction for MSLT-3. The associated interlayer ionic conduction exists in mid temperature region for all doped derivatives. In highest temperature region modified interlayer ionic conduction along with the polaronic conduction, exist for MSLT-1, MSLT-2, and only modified interlayer ionic conduction for MSLT-3. The loss tangent (Tan$\delta$) in manganese-doped derivatives of layered $Na_{1.9}Li_{0.1}Ti_3O_7$ ceramic may be due to contribution of electric conduction, dipole orientation, and space charge polarization. The corresponding increase in the values of relative permittivity may be due to increase in number of dipoles in the interlayer space while the corresponding decrease in the values of relative permittivity may be due to the increase in the leakage current due to the higher doping.

  • Luminance properties of external electrode fluorescent lamps and optical components in backlight unit (BLU) and optical transmission rates of optical sheets, are investigated for LCD-TV of 32" in diagonal with WXGA level resolution (1366$\times$768). The luminance is measured in 12-lamps and 18-lamps of BLU. The luminance uniformity preserves about 85 % in the 12-lamps backlight, while the luminance of optical components and the efficiency of backlight in the 12-lamps are lower than those in the 18-lamps backlight. When the lamp luminance in BLU having 12-lamps and 18-lamps is normalized as 100 %, the relative luminance of a diffusion plate, a diffusion sheet, a prism sheet (BEF), a polarization sheet (DBEF), has a constant value without dependence on a lamp luminance. The relative luminance of optical components in 12-lamps BLU is lower than that in 18-lamps backlight. The light transmission rate, the relative luminance of liquid crystal display panel with the luminance 100 % of backlight, is 7.14 % in the use of DBEF and BEF, 6.12 % in the use of only DBEF, and 3.21 % in the use of only BEF. Those Data obtained in this experiment for the lamps and optical components, are the design parameters for the LCD backlight.

  • This paper focuses on the retail industry of industrial share of the GDP, productivity of distribution industry and input-out analysis between Korea and Japan, also results are summarized as follows. First, the share of GDP in agriculture, forestry and fisheries of the both countries is falling. That of manufacture increases in South Korea, while Japan is falling. While distribution industry shows vice versa. Employed population by industry is falling both countries also. The relative labor productivity shows that agriculture, forestry and fisheries, retail industry needs more labor, while manufacture has been met for both countries. Second, compare to Japan, the retail industry of Korea has been increased since 1990. Likewise, overall productivity of distribution industry in Korea has been increased while almost that of Japan has declined. Third, production inducement effects of Japan are greater than that of Korea. On the other hand, import inducement effects show vice versa. Fourth, as shown from the final demand of distribution industry and the rate of dependence on production inducement, we can see that the “increase in stocks” increases while gross government fixed capital formation shows vice versa. Korea's private consumption expenditure increases while Japan shows versa. South Korea's government consumption expenditure and exports are rising, on the other hand, that of Japan is declining. Fifth, the rate of dependence on distribution industry and import inducement shows the same tendency from both countries. As we can see from the private consumption expenditure, government consumption expenditure, gross government fixed capital formation, gross private fixed capital formation, increase in stocks, the rate of dependence on import inducement is more effective than the rate of dependence on production inducement. While the exports are comparatively ineffective. Sixth, the degrees of influence of retail industry are similar between Korea and Japan, while sensitivity of the Korean industry has been weakened. In this sense, strong policies are needed to boost the industry. Seventh, the investments in the retail industry of Korea showed the public-led trend, while Japan showed private sector-led investment trend. The investment trend of Korea's retail industry will be switched into private sector-led investment step by step in the future. This finding will be an important clue to set the policy direction of Korea distribution industry. Finally, both Korea and Japan are still in need of employment in retail industry. Not addressed in this paper, such as value-added-induced effects, employment inducement effect, will be remaining challenges in the following paper.

  • Until recently, regression based spatial interpolation methods and Kriging based spatial interpolation methods have been largely used to estimate land price or housing price, but less attention has been paid on comparing the performance of these spatial interpolation methods. In this regard, this research applied regression based spatial interpolators and Kriging based spatial interpolators for estimating the land prices in Dalseo-gu, Daegu metropolitan city and evaluated the accuracy of eight spatial interpolators. OLS, SLM, SEM, and GWR were used as regression based spatial interpolators while SK, OK, UK, and CK were employed as Kriging based spatial interpolators. The global accuracy was statistically evaluated by RMSE, adjusted RMSE, and COD. The relative accuracy was visually compared by three-dimensional residual error map and scatterplot. Results from statistical and visual analyses indicate that GWR reflecting the spatial non-stationarity was a relatively more accurate spatial predictor to estimate land prices in the study area than SAR and Kriging based spatial interpolators considering the spatial dependence. The findings from this research will contribute to the secondary research into analyzing the urban spatial structure with land prices.

  • An analysis was made on optimal N fertilizer for high yielding and ordinary rice varieties and their dependence upon the climatic conditions during growth stage in 1971-1979. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The coefficient of variation for optimum N rates were 19.1% for high yielding varieties and 21.9% for ordinary varieties. And the those of yields at optimum N levels were 7.0% for high yielding varieties and 9.9% for ordinary varieties. 2. Optimum N fertilizer rates for high yielding varieties were 22.4kg/10a in favorable climatic years and 16.1kg/10a in unfavorable climatic years. As for ordinary varieties, optimum N levels were 19.2kg/10a in favorable climatic years and 13.0kg/10a in unfavorable climatic years. Accordingly, more N should be applied in favorable climatic years regardless of varieties. 3. This difference was derived from sunshine hours, rainfall, and relative humidity. Optimum N rates were correlated positively with sunshine hours, and negatively with rainfall and relative humidity.

  • Korea launched Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Satellite (GEMS), a UV/visible spectrometer that measure pollution gases on 18 February 2020. Because satellite retrieval is an ill-posed inverse solving process, the validation with ground-based measurements or other satellite measurements is essential to obtain reliable products. For this purpose, satellite-based OMI and OMPS total column ozone (TCO), and ground-based Pandora TCO in Busan and Seoul were selected for future GEMS validation. First of all, the goal of this study is to validate the ground ozone data using characteristics that satellite data provide coherent ozone measurements on a global basis, although satellite data have a larger error than the ground-based measurements. In the cross validation between Pandora and OMI TCO, we have found abnormal deviation in ozone time series from Pandora #29 observed in Seoul. This shows that it is possible to perform inverse validation of ground data using satellite data. Then OMPS TCO was compared with verified Pandora TCO. Both data shows a correlation coefficient of 0.97, an RMSE of less than 2 DU and the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference of >4%. The result also shows the OMPS-Pandora relative mean difference with SZA, TCO, cross-track position and season have insignificant dependence on those variables. In addition, we showed that appropriate thresholds depending on the spatial resolution of each satellite sensor are required to eliminate the impact of the cloud on Pandora TCO.
