  • Seashore landfill projects use undersea pump dredging method for construction of airport and factory site. Coarse grain soil from the dredging is considered for use at inland. West sea shore bottom consists of primarily coarser grained silt-sand and this component contains far more percentage than is the case with East sea and South sea area. This soil shows very different characteristic at consolidation and compaction behavior. This research targets to utilize this type of dredging soil. Test specimen is from West sea (Saemangum) dredged soil landfill site. Model analysis is done for getting prediction of original soil relative density and N-value from dynamic compaction energy variance. Dynamic compaction energy is calculated for efficient foundation design.

  • In Korea, the pipe type that has been well used as sewage pipe from the past is primarily a rigid pipe which is represented by concrete hume pipe, but the use of it is being decreased sharply because of the problems such as tube erosion and incomplete watertightness securing through the time. On the other hand, the use of flexible pipe has been increased because its construction ability is excellent on account of its light weight as well as it is resistant to corrosion. However, because there are lacks of market's confidence in flexible pipe and occurrence cases of partial damage incomplete caused by compaction control, cause analysis and management for them are needed. Therefore, this study tried to estimate the deformation characteristics of pipe caused by each condition through numerical analysis changing construction sequence, rigidity of pipe, strength of ground concrete under the pipe, relative compaction ratio of sand foundation under the pipe and relative compaction ratio of backfill material above the pipe. Evaluation result is that influence on each factor is confirmed and the quality control of sand around the pipe are turned up to be important.

  • In cases of the loosely accumulated ground and soft clayey soils, the settlement criterion usually governs in evaluating the stability of structures. The settlement is also a dominant factor to control the design of granular compaction piles mainly applied to the reinforcement of foundation structures in soft ground. In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on the load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the present study, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles is proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. Further, far the verification of a validity of the proposed method, predicted settlements are compared with results from previous studies. In addition, parametric studies are performed together with detailed analyses of relevant design parameters.

  • In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on tile load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the companion research paper, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles was proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. In the presented study, to validate a propriety of the previously proposed method, large scale field load tests and three dimensional numerical analyses are performed. The results are analyzed in detail and compared with the predicted settlements by the proposed method. Finally, a simple method to estimate the settlement of granular compaction piles is suggested for an easy application of the practical design.

  • The densification of $Al_2$O$_3$/15v/o ZrO$_2$ (Zirconia Toughened Alumina: ZTA) to the 99% of theoretical density was attempted by controlling the processing parameters affecting the each processing step i.e., milling, spray-drying, forming and pressureless sintering. The ZTA processed under the identical conditions showed a large variation in the green and sintered densities, and the mechanical properties. The deviation of 4-point bending strength was more than 100MPa for the ZTA with ~99% of theoretical density. Moreover, the relative green and sintered densities were deviated greatly from the average value. This low reproducibility could be caused by the variation of spray-dried granule properties. Thus, the effect of yield strength and morphology of spray-dried ZTA granule on the green and sintered densities and the mechanical properties needs to be studied in detail. The objective of this work is to fine out the optimum condition of compaction pressure and compaction method depending on the properties of spray-dried granules.

  • In this study, we reported the microstructure and properties of Ag-$SnO_2$ contact materials fabricated by a controlled milling process with subsequent consolidation. The milled powders were consolidated to bulk samples using a magnetic pulsed compaction process. The nano-scale $SnO_2$ phases were distributed homogeneously in the Ag matrix after the consolidation. The relative density and hardness of the Ag-$SnO_2$ contact materials were 95~96% and 89~131 Hv, respectively.

  • This is a study on the influence of percent retaining of No. 10 sieve on soil compaction. Reviewing the test values in part 1 and part 2, a relative equation to predict maximum dry density and optimum moisture content was induced. Results of the study are as follow; 1. Maximum dry density increases according as percent retatining of No. 10 sieve increase untill 40%, but it decreases in more than 50%. 2. Maximum dry density has the greatest value at 25%, also it decreases according to increase or decrease at 25% in percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 3. Grain size distribution that Maximum dry density is largest, is 40% in 4.76mm to 2.0mm, 35% in 2.0mm to 0.074mm, 25% in lese than 0.074mm. 4. Correlation betwesn Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content made a curved line. The deviation between maximum dry density to be predicted from optimum moisture content and test values, is less than about 5%. 5. Range of deviation between optimum moisture content to be predicted from classification area and uniformity coefficient isless than about 20%, which belongs to range of moisture content that is correspondent with 95% of maximum dry density, generally.

  • In this study, a series of laboratory tests based on 'Unit-cell concept' are performed to investigate improvement characteristics of clay ground in sand compaction pile method. Settlement reduction characteristics of composite ground and improvement characteristics of clay part could be qualified. In these procedure, the new strain-compression index($C_{\epsilon}$) of composite ground are adopted to show compressibility of composite ground according to the area replacement ratio, which is similar to the compression index($C_c$) in pure clay ground. Also, using normalization of reduction of water content in composite ground to the initial water content, improvement characteristics of clay part are investigated.

  • In the present investigation, it is attempted to derive a yield function and associated flow rules of loose metal powders to predict plastic deformation and density change during compaction. The loose metal powders yield by shear stress as well as hydrostatic stress and the yield strength is much smaller in tension than compression. Therefore, a yield function for the powders is expressed as a shifted ellipse toward the negative direction in the hydrostatic stress axis in the space defined by the two stresses. Each of parameters A, B and .delta. used in the yield function is expressed as a function of relative density and it is determined by uniaxial strain and hydrostatic compressions using Cu powder. Flow rules obtained by imposing the normality rule to the yield function are applied to the analyses of unidirectional, bidirectional and hydrostatic compressions, resulting in an excellent agreement with experiments. The yield function is further examined by checking volume changes in plane stain, uniaxial strain and shear deformations.

  • The introduction of ceramic particulate into metallic powder will unavoidably lower the compressibility and formability of the mixed powder. In this study, warm compaction, which is a simple and low cost technique to produce high density PM parts, was introduced in preparing composite. The aim of this paper is to prepare the warm compacted NbC particulate reinforced Fe-based composite, then study its tribological behavior and application in the valve-guide cup. A 15 wt.% NbC reinforced iron-based composite was prepared. It possesses a relative density of 98%, a tensile strength of 515 MPa, a hardness of HRC 58 and a remarkable tribological behavior.
