In this study, inorganic (steel, asbestos and carbon) and organic (polyacryl and polyamide) fibers were used to investigate their reinforcing effects of the physical properties of Portland cement. From the load-displacement curve of each reinforced specimen, fracture strength, Young's module, fracture energy and fracture toughness were computed and compared with each other. In addition, the experiment of their impact toughness was carried out and compared with the fracture energy. For the improvement of fracture strength the inorganic (asbestos) fiber reinforcement was most effective, while the best reinforcing effect of impact toughness was achieved by organic (polyacryl) fiber. And steel fiber proved to be most adequate for improvement of both fracture strength and impact toughness. Steel fiber also showed the highest fracture energy and fracture toughness among all of the fibers.

This study is to investigate the ultimate shear load of prestressed girder made of Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). Nine girders were tested until failure in shear. An analytical model to predict the ultimate shear load was formulated based on the Two Bounds Theory. A fiber reinforcing model was constituted based on the random assumption of steel fiber uniform distribution. The predicted values were compared with the conventional predictions and the test results. The proposed equations for computing the ultimate shear strength can be used for the ultimate failure status analysis, which could also be utilized for numerical limit analysis of prestressed UHPFRC girder. The established fiber reinforcing theoretical model can also be a reference for micro-mechanics analysis of UHPFRC.
Environmentally friendly biocomposites were made using plant-based natural fibers, such as henequen and kenaf. The natural fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) and unsaturated polyester (UP) biocomposites were examined in terms of the reinforcing effect of natural fibers on thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Kenaf (KE) and henequen (HQ) fibers were treated with an electron beam (EB) of 10 and 200 kGy doses, respectively, or with a 5 wt% NaOH solution. Four types of biocomposites (KE/PP, HQ/PP, KE/UP and HQ/UP) were fabricated by compression molding and each biocomposite was characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The kenaf fiber had the larger reinforcing effect on the dynamic mechanical properties of both PP and UP biocomposites than the henequen fiber. The highest storage modulus was obtained from the biocomposite with the combination of UP matrix and 200 kGy EB treated kenaf fibers.

Reinforced concrete frame buildings in regions of low to moderate seismicity are typically designed only for gravity loads with non-seismic detailing provisions of the code. These buildings possess strong beam-weak column, which brings about the brittle structural performance like the column sidesway failure mechanism during the strong lateral load. The objective of this paper is to enhance the column strength and deformation capacity for reconfiguring the structural failure mode by averting a column soft-story collapse and moving to a more ductile beam-sides way mechanism suing new reinforcing materials. Aramid fiber sheet and reinforcing rod-composite materials was used for this purpose. The column was modeled by the 2/3 scale experimental specimen retested. According to the concept of the capacity design, the damaged column was strengthened by the column jacketing using new reinfocing materials such as rod-composite materials. In conclusion, the improvement of the flexural strength is observed and the capacity of the energy dissipation and the ductility is enhanced, too.

The result of an experimental study on the mechanical properties of different types of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete are presented in this paper. This study has been performed to obtain the properties of PFRC such as slump, Vee-Bee time, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, toughness and resistance to impact. The test variables are fiber content, fiber types, fiber length and W/C ratio. Polypropylene fibers were effective in reinforcing the matrix. A remarkable increase in toughness was observed by the addition of polypropylene fibers.

Modulus of rupture (MOR) and flexural toughness in hybrid fiber reinforced cement pastes mixed with micro-fiber (carbon fiber) and macro-fiber (steel fiber) and replaced with silica fume according to the fixed ratio were researched. Reinforcing efficiency in specimens were estimated by two factors, such as strengthening factor $(F_s)$ and toughening factor $(F_t)$, which were calculated from the analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the response values, such as MOR and absorbtion energy $(W_0)$. According to the experimental design by the fractional orthogonal array, nine hybrid fibrous reinforced paste series and one non-reinforced control paste were manufactured. Specimens of each series were tested by the INSTRON Inc. 8502(model) equipment in three-points bending and then measured the load-deflection response relationships. Considerable strengthening of cement pastes resulted in' the case of other factors without carbon fiber and toughening of cement pastes about all factors showed high. Based on the significance of factors related to response values from ANOVA, following assessments were available; $F_s$ or MOR: silica fume $\gg$ steel fiber $\gg$ carbon fiber; $F_t\;or\;W_0$: steel fiber > carbon fiber > silica fume. Optimized composition condition was estimated by steel fiber of $1.5\%$, carbon fiber of $0.5\%$ and silica fume $7.5\%$ in side of strengthening and steel fiber of $1.5\%$, carbon fiber of $0.75\%$ and silica fume $7.5\%$ in side of toughening.

Basalt fiber has many advantages as a reinforcing fiber such as high tensile strength and similar density to concrete. This study investigated the bonding property and the effect of fiber orientation on tensile strength of basalt fiber. Single fiber pullout tests for basalt and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were performed to evaluate the bonding property between basalt fiber and mortar. And then tensile strength of basalt, PVA, and polyethylene (PE) fibers according to fiber orientation were measured. From the test results, it was exhibited that the chemical bond, frictional bond, and slip-hardening coefficient of basalt fiber were 1.88, 1.03, 0.24 times of PVA fibers, respectively. And the strength reduction coefficient of basalt fiber was 9 times of PVA fiber and 3 times of PE fiber.

This study aimed to review the performance stability of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) fiber reinforcing materials among the synthetic fiber types for which the application of performance reinforcing materials to fiber-reinforced concrete is being reviewed by examining short-term and long-term performance changes. To this end, the residual performance was analyzed after exposing the PET fiber to an acid/alkali environment, and the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture by age were analyzed, and the surface of the PET fiber collected from the concrete specimen was examined using a scanning microscope (SEM). The changes in were analyzed. As a result of the acid/alkali environment exposure test of PET fiber, the strength retention rate was 83.4~96.4% in acidic environment and 42.4~97.9% in alkaline environment. It was confirmed that the strength retention rate of the fiber itself significantly decreased when exposed to high-temperature strong alkali conditions, and the strength retention rate increased in the finished yarn coated with epoxy. In the test results of the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture, no reduction in flexural strength was found, and the equivalent flexural strength result also did not show any degradation in performance as a fiber reinforcement. Even in the SEM analysis results, no surface damage or cross-sectional change of the PET reinforcing fibers was observed. These results mean that no damage or cross-section reduction of PET reinforcing fibers occurs in cement concrete environments even when fiber-reinforced concrete is exposed to high temperatures in the early stage or depending on age, and the strength of PET fibers decreases in cement concrete environments. The impact is judged to be of no concern. As the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength according to age were also stably expressed, it could be seen that performance degradation due to hydrolysis, which is a concern due to the use of PET fiber reinforcing materials, did not occur, and it was confirmed that stable residual strength retention characteristics were exhibited.
Sixteen concrete mixes reinforced with hybrid steel-polybinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and a control concrete mix with no fiber were tested in order to examine the effect of the micro and macro fibers on the slump and different mechanical properties of concrete. Main variables investigated were length and volume fraction of steel and PVA fibers. The measured mechanical properties of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete were analyzed using the fiber reinforcing index and compared with those recorded from monolithic steel or PVA fiber reinforced concrete. The initial slump of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete decreased with the increase of the aspect ratio and the volume fraction of fibers. In addition, splitting tensile strength, modui of rupture and elasticity, and flexural toughness index of concrete increased with the increase of the fiber reinforcement index. Modulus of rupture and flexural toughness index of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete were higher than those of monolithic fiber reinforced concrete, though the total volume fraction of hybrid fibers was lower than that of monolithic fiber. For enhancing the flexural toughness index of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete, using the steel fiber of 60 mm length was more effective than using the steel fibers combined with 60 mm and 30 mm lengths.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of high strength R/C interior beam-column joints regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar. Five specimens of retrofitted the beam-column joint regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar were constructed and tested for their retrofitring performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the interior beam-column joint regions (IJIR series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity. Specimens of IJIR series, designed by the retrofitting of advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 114.2~123.5% and its energy dissipation capacity by 1.55~1.85 times in comparison with the standard specimen of SIJC with a displacement ductility of 5.
