The four different polymer compounds were manufactured to make cable sheath for ship industry. Two kinds of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) were selected as main matrix polymers for compounding with fire retardant, crosslinking agent, filler, plasticizer, and other additives. The properties of the four compounded materials were investigated with the contents of fire retardant, silane coated aluminum hydroxide (S-ATH). Rheology, Mooney viscosity, and tensile strength increased with S-ATH contents by reinforcing effect. With increasing fire retardant amount, fire resistance increased, but cold resistance didn't show an obvious enhancement due to polar effect of vinyl acetate in EVA.
This study conducted on the introduction of recycled cellulose fibers, which are widely used in the textile industry as eco-friendly biomass materials, into polypropylene resins, which are mainly used for interior and exterior materials such as door trims and console parts of automobiles. In general, cellulose fibers can affect mechanical properties and have a lightening effect when used as a reinforcing agent. However, since cellulose fibers have hydrophilic properties and have relatively low compatibility with industrial polymer resins, they are used in combination through fiber hydrophobic surface treatment. Therefore, through this study, the reforming reaction conditions optimized in terms of hydrophobicity and workability for cellulose fibers are studied. Furthermore, polypropylene containing surface-modified cellulose fibers was prepared to compare physical properties by fiber content and study optimized content.

A huge amount of de-icing agent is sprayed during winter to promote traffic safety in cold regions, and the quantity of de-icing agent sprayed has increased each year. The main ingredients in commonly used de-icing agents are chlorides, such as calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) and sodium chloride(NaCl). While calcium chloride is mostly used in Korea and sodium chloride is usually used in the U.S. and Japan, all de-icing agents include chloride ions. The chlorides included in sprayed calcium chloride-based de-icing agents have severe adverse effects, including the corrosion of reinforcing steels through salt damage by infiltrating into road structures, reduced structural performance of pavement or damage to bridge structures, and surface scaling, in combination with freezing damage in winter, as well as water pollution. In addition, the deterioration of paved concrete road surface that occurs after the use of calcium chloride-based de-icing agent accelerates the development of visual problems with traffic structures. Therefore, the present study was performed to prepare an environment-friendly liquid de-icing agent through a reaction between waste organic acids and calcium-based by-products, which are industrial by-products, and to analyze the properties of the de-icing agent in order to evaluate its applicability to road facilities.
In this study, to investigate the strength enhancement and stress transfer effect of the inflatable chemicals used in the recovery of soft ground or partial settlement, the dilatant solution was prepared and classified by measuring the density and the earth pressure in the sand ground. The inflation reinforcing agent was prepared by injecting into a separate impervious vacuum sheet by dividing into a relatively high expansion group and a low expansion group, and a cementation experiment was performed in the lower part of the homogeneously formed model ground. As a result, reinforcing effect was shown up to about 15cm above the expansion reinforcement, and the soil pressure showed a compaction tendency similar to the concentrated load of $1.150{\sim}11.298t/m^2$.

Carbon nanotube buckypaper (CNTs-BP)/thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomer composites were successfully fabricated. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites exhibited simultaneous improvements in both tensile modulus and strength by 1360 and 430%, respectively, as compared to pure PU. Possible reinforcing mechanisms were evidenced by SEM analyses and tensile tests. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites can be potentially used as an inter-reinforcing agent in ultra-lightweight, high-strength aircraft, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, etc.
Composite materials are created by combining two or more component to achieve desired properties which could not be obtained with the separate components. The use of reinforcing fillers, which can reduce material costs and improve certain properties, is increasing in thermoplastic polymer composites. Currently, various inorganic fillers such as talc, mica, clay, glass fiber and calcium carbonate are being incorporated into thermoplastic composites. Nevertheless, lignocellulose fibers have drawn attention due to their abundant availability, low cost and renewable nature. In recent, interest has grown in composites made from lignocellulose fiber in thermoplastic polymer matrices, particularly for low cost/high volume applications. In addition to high specific properties, lignocellulose fibers offer a number of benefits for lignocellulose fiber/thermoplastic polymer composites. These include low hardness, which minimize abrasion of the equipment during processing, relatively low density, biodegradability, and low cost on a unit-volume basis. In spite of the advantage mentioned above, the use of lignocellulose fibers in thermoplastic polymer composites has been plagued by difficulties in obtaining good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion because lignocellulose fiber is hydrophilic and thermoplastic polymer is hydrophobic. The application of lignocellulose fibers as reinforcements in composite materials requires, just as for glass-fiber reinforced composites, a strong adhesion between the fiber and the matrix regardless of whether a traditional polymer matrix, a biodegradable polymer matrix or cement is used. Further this article gives a survey about physical and chemical treatment methods which improve the fiber matrix adhesion, their results and effects on the physical properties of composites. Coupling agents in lignocellulose fiber and polymer composites play a very important role in improving the compatibility and adhesion between polar lignocellulose fiber and non-polar polymeric matrices. In this article, we also review various kinds of coupling agent and interfacial mechanism or phenomena between lignocellulose fiber and thermoplastic polymer.
The National Chuncheon Museum has carried out a conservation process in order to prevent corrosion of the seated iron Śākyamuni Buddha statue from Goreyo Dysnasty for its exhibition. Before the conservation process, the surface of the artifact showed exfoliation and the artifact was damaged from rear to legs so exhibition was impossible. Therefore a process to get rid of pollution and to reinforce and protect the artifact was carried out. Before the reinforcing process, a basic test was carried out using micro crystalline wax type with reference to foreign and domestic experiment results. As a result, as wax(in xylene) 5wt% of Dongnam petrochemical Ltd. showed no efflorescence and little change in surface color and was convenient to use, it was chosen as a reinforcing agent and used to suppress corrosion. For the restoration of damaged parts, an internal support was made and used with an epoxy resin, allowing removable restoration, thus increasing effectiveness for exhibition.

Epoxy resins are widely used as high performance thermosets in many industrial applications, such as coatings, adhesives and composites. Recently, a lot of research has been carried out in order to improve their mechanical properties and thermal stability in various fields. Carbon nanotubes possess high physical and mechanical properties that are considered to be ideal reinforcing materials in composites. CNT-reinforced epoxy system hold the promise of delivering superior composite materials with their high strength, light weight and multi functional features. Therefore, this study used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and gamma rays to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy. The diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as epoxy resins were cured by gamma ray irradiation with well-dispersed MWNTs as a reinforcing agent and triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate (TASHFA) as an initiator. The flexural modulus was measured by UTM (universal testing machine). At this point, the flexural modulus factor exhibits an upper limit at 0.1 wt% MWNT. The thermal properties had improved by increasing the content of MWNT in the result of TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). However, they were decreased with increasing the radiation dose. The change of glass transition temperature by the radiation dose was characterized by DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis).
The objective of this research is to develop paper sludge reinforced thermoplastic composites which incorporate the advantages of each component materials. The effects of paper sludge content(0, 10, 20, 30, 40----), mesh size(20~40, 60~80, less than 100mesh), and coupling agent(Epolene E-43 and Epolene G-3003) on the mechanical properties of paper sludge-polypropylene composites were investigated. Composite density increased with an increase in the paper sludge content. When paper sludge is incorporated into a polypropylene matrix, the flexural properties of the composite increase significantly with an increase in the paper sludge mixing ratio. Especially, flexural modulus was improved with increasing paper sludge content. The flexural strength of composites was improved, but flexural modulus reduced somewhat with decreasing paper sludge particle size. The flexural properties of paper sludge-polypropylene composites were improved by using coupling agents to enhance the bonding between reinforcing filler and matrix. Use of the epolene E-43 and G-3003 resulted in considerable improvement in the flexural strength over control specimens. The flexural strength of the G-3003 composite system is higher than that of the E-43 system. Generally, izod notched impact strength of paper sludge-polypropylene composite decreased slightly, whereas izod unnotched impact strength decreased significantly with increasing paper sludge contents. There was no effects of paper sludge particle size on impact strength of paper sludge-polypropylene composites. And izod unnotched impact strength of epolene E-43 composite system sharply decreased but that of G-3003 composite system was no tendency with increasing additive content.
For safe conservation treatment of damaged accessory relics that were unearthed, the quality of the material should be accurately identified through a nondestructive analysis and failure analysis. This study provides the basic conservational scientific data regarding material analyses and conservation treatment that were conducted for 11 relics, including amber and agate that were discovered during the repair of Geumsansa Temple's Hall of Maitreya Buddha and Left Attendant Buddhas in June 2008. An ultraviolet analysis, SEM-EDS analysis and FT-IR microscope analysis revealed that the physical and chemical characteristics of the 11 relics are the same as those of amber. It is inferred that the cracks and exfoliation of the surface of most amber relics is attributable to darkening of the color due to C=C bond oxidation. It is also assumed that cracks and exfoliation occurred from the weathered layer on the amber surface. As such, it is appropriate to engage in conservation treatment of the damaged amber relics by using $Paraloid^{(R)}$ B67 reinforcing agent that is diluted in nonpolar solvent. The greatest care is needed for future handling of organic artifacts.
