  • This paper is results of numerical analysis on the behavior of colluvium slope with combinations of soil nails and earth anchors during excavation. In order to maintain the stability of the colluvium cut, being composed of gravel and boulder and thus local in stability being expected during slope cut, temporary reinforcing method of soil nailing with shotcrete might be used. Subsequent method of cast-in-place facing with earth anchors can be used to maintain cut slope stable permanently. For the cut slope where these methods had been applied, the numerical techniques were applied to their behaviors and investigate the stability of the slope. Limit equilibrium methods were used to confirm to maintain the slope stability during and after excavation and application of those reinforcing methods. Another numerical technique of FEM was also used to find the stress and strain as well as deformation distribution in reinforcing materials and slope ground during excavation.

  • This study investigated filling performance of concrete which can pass between reinforcing bars and be fully filled, and examined fundamental properties of concrete which is before or after hardened state, in response to maximum size of coarse aggregate. This study was also originally intended to find out one of the method that can improve concrete quality, using crushed coarse aggregate. Test showed that passing ratio of concrete decreased as aggregate site increased and as space between reinforcing bars decreased. In addition concrete using bigger size of coarse aggregate exhibited slightly higher compressive strength and showed lower length change ratio of drying shrinkage.

  • The core drilling method is considered to be the most effective and common method of assessing the compressive strength of concrete in existing reinforced concrete buildings for structural repair and retrofit. In general, core specimens within reinforcing bars are not permitted in the regulations with regard to assessing concrete strength even if the core specimens can contain the bars in some cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the reinforcement arrangement on the concrete compressive strength as a basic research to propose the quantitative criteria of strength for core specimens containing reinforcements. To complete the basic research, cylinder specimens inserted in a variety of reinforcement arrangements were prepared and tested.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression testes were performed to increase field applications of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected and auto cutter was used to obtain reliable length of fibers. Remolded soil specimens were tested for obtaining the basic data to be applied to the reinforcement of soft clay, embankment or barrier and clay liner of wastes landfill etc. Conversion equations from weight to volume of clay mixed with short fiber are introduced and relationships between fiber content and fiber concentration are derived. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure increases. The best efficient reinforcing effect is given at the aspect ratio of 80~120 and the fiber content of 1.2%~2.4% and the fiber diameter of 0.27mm.

  • Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) braces can be used to reduce seismic residual deformations observed in steel braced Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames. To further enhance the seismic performance of these frames, the use of SMA bars to reinforce their beams is investigated in this paper. Three-story and nine-story SMA-braced RC frames are designed utilizing regular steel reinforcing bars. Their seismic performance is examined using twenty seismic ground motions. The frames are then re-designed using SMA reinforcing bars. Different design alternatives representing different locations for the SMA reinforcing bars are considered. The optimum locations for the SMA bars are identified after analysing the design alternatives. The seismic performance of these frames has indicated better deformability when SMA bars are used in the beams.

  • The effect of the surface area of silicas on their reinforcing performance to styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds was systematically investigated. The feasibility of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area ($S_{BET}$) as a parameter representing the characteristics of the silicas was discussed compared to the mesopore volume, c value, oil absorption, and uptake of silane. The increase in $S_{BET}$ of silicas caused a considerable increase in Mooney viscosity, minimum torque, and hysteresis loss of the silica-filled SBR compounds, while significantly enhancing their abrasion property. These changes were explained by the attrition between the hydrophilic silica surface and the hydrophobic rubber chains. As expected, the change in $S_{BET}$ did not induce any remarkable changes in the cure, processing, tensile, and dynamic properties of the silica-filled SBR compounds because the crosslinking density of the rubber chains mainly determined these properties.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests for compacted short fiber reinforced clay were performed to increase the field applications, e.g. retaining wall, waste landfill, soft ground etc. of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected. To acquire reliable length of fibers, an auto cutter was used and a helical mixer was also used to avoid floating of fibers during mixing soil and fibers. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure is increased. Reinforcing effect has a maximum value at the aspect ratio of 120 and the fiber content of 0.6%∼1.2% and low confining pressure like 50kPa.

  • In this study, an experimental work is conducted to evaluate the bond performance between reinforcing bars and surrounding concrete in a lapped splice. The major variable of this test is a transverse reinforcement in lap-spliced tension reinforcing bars. The test results indicate that the bond strength per unit splice length increases with an increase in the transverse reinforcement factor $K_{\alpha}$. The specimens taken less than (c+$K_{tr}$)/$d_b$=3.0 tend to be very brittle at failure. But the specimens taken longer than (c+$K_{tr}$)/$d_b$=3.0 tend to be somewhat ductile at failure.

  • The study was carried out to evaluate material characteristics and environmental effects of anti-corrosion inhibitor which is known to be very easy to use, since the admixture is added during concrete mixing. Specimens were fabricate with 6 different dosages of anti-corrosion inhibitor and cured in the autoclave chamber with different number of cycles. As a result of measuring corrosion of reinforcing bars embedded in concrete, it was found that even small amount of admixture application can prevent reinforcing bars from corrosion and the efficiency is gradually decreased with increase of the number of autoclave cycles and of percentage of chloride content. In addition, the admixture will not affect material characteristics such as compressive strength and air content.

  • It is not feasible for agricultural facility managers to estimate how severe damages are and what are causes of them when agricultural hydraulic facilities get damaged for some reasons. Moreover, it is nearly impossible for agricultural facility managers to take immediate actions to repair and reinforce the damaged structures. Thus, there have been needs for well-established systems to help agricultural facility managers understand its severity and causes, and take proper actions to reduce speed of deterioration and to repair/reinforce them. Thus repairing and reinforcing systems of agricultural hydraulic structures based on agricultural facility management policies, developed in this study, can be efficiently used in field works to determine top priority location and the budget of repairing and reinforcing projects if detailed information of damages in concrete structures and damage types are well compiled and classified with standardized image data complemented.
