  • Two-arch tunnels require minimal spacing between the 2 tunnels and thus occupy small amount of land compared to parallel tunnels. But it is rather expensive. The parallel tunnel is not as expensive, but it requires more land than 2-arch tunnels. This may cause a problem when there is a land shortage. The new design is to connect these two types of tunnels by another pair of parallel tunnels where the separation distance is gradually increasing. The applicability of this new design to the cases where rock condition is not even fair has to be verified since the width of the pillar between the connecting tunnels can be quite narrow. Therefore both two and three dimensional numerical analyses were conducted and pillar stability was examined for rock classes IV and V in two different ways. Results showed that this new design is still effective for poor rock conditions if central pillar is properly reinforced by tension bolts as long as overburden is less than five times of the tunnel diameter.

  • The endpoint of the Yangbuk tunnel constructed at the national road between Gyeongju and Gampo is composed of massive cutting because the road is driven through the sides of mountain. PAP(Prestressed Anchor and PC Pannel) retaining wall as a slope stability method was established over this section. Part of the anchor in PAP wall became broken after six months. We performed inverse analysis through its measurements obtained until that time. An geological investigation to confirm the condition of ground layering and the attraction force test to find as to whether some errors might be present in the anchor were made. According to the back analysis, it was turned out that the value with soil parameter 90% that was applied to the original design was pertinent. In the redesign, the permissible stress in the anchor body was changed from 306 kN to 591 kN and 784 kN and the fixation position was increased from 11.0 m to 23.0 m. Nevertheless, five months have passed since the exchange of the anchor, the measurement results validate that stable state has been maintained. This research is considered a case that the immediate maintenance helps prevent the slope accidents.

  • Due to the collapse of corrugated bulkheads subject to accidental flooding which is thought to be a primary cause of bulk carrier losses International Maritime Organization(IMO), the International Association of Classification Societies(IACS) and the leading classification societies are taking a growing concern for the structural safety of corrugated bulkheads of bulk carriers. To prevent progressive collapse of corrugated bulkhead in flooded condition particularly of forward cargo ho1d they try to make rules which require reinforcement of corrugated bulkhead structure. However, we are still confronted with the urgent problem of more accurate and efficient ultimate strength assessment for corrugated bulkheads. This paper develops a special purpose nonlinear FE program for analyzing progressive collapse behavior of corrugated bulkheads subject to lateral pressure loads. As verification examples, the program is applied to collapse strength analysis of steel corrugated bulkhead test model.

  • Jet grouting method is widely being used in many geotechnical problems, especially for the purpose of reinforcement of clayey ground and cut-off wall of sandy ground. However, its design depends on highly empirical method, in which many researches have been undertaken. This study investigated the effect of cavitation on jet grouting. Small-scaled model tests were carried out using specially designed and fabricated device to analyze the effect of cavitation on jet grouting with various test conditions including ground condition, injection pressure, and injection time. The test results show that cavitation has a significant effect on jet grouting, and it has a potential for engineering application.

  • Road bridges are deteriorating gradually, and it is forecasted that the number of road bridges aging over 30 years will increase by more than 3 times of the current number. To maintain road bridges in a safe condition, current safety conditions of the bridges must be estimated for repair or reinforcement. However, budget and professional manpower required to perform in-depth inspections of road bridges are limited. This study proposes an estimation model for safety rating of road bridges by analyzing the data from Facility Management System (FMS) and Yearbook of Road Bridges and Tunnel. These data include basic specifications, year of completion, traffic, safety rating, and others. The distribution of safety rating was imbalanced, indicating 91% of road bridges have safety ratings of A or B. To improve classification performance, five safety ratings were integrated into two classes of G (good, A and B) and P (poor ratings under C). This rearrangement was set because facilities with ratings under C are required to be repaired or reinforced to recover their original functionality. 70% of the original data were used as training data, while the other 30% were used for validation. Data of class P in the training data were oversampled by 3 times, and Repeated Incremental Pruning to Produce Error Reduction (RIPPER) algorithm was used to develop the estimation model. The results of estimation model showed overall accuracy of 84.8%, true positive rate of 67.3%, and 29 classification rule. Year of completion was identified as the most critical factor on affecting lower safety ratings of bridges.

  • This study introduces a reinforcement work case using Twin-Jet Method. The area is located behind the abutment of the bridges built on soft clay along the $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Express Highway. Its foundation was constructed by installing EPS blocks on the original ground to reduce the embankment load under the highway. However, the ground deformation has continuously occurred due to the settlement of the foundation soft cohesive soils. The amounts of subsidences at the surface turned out to be 20~30.0mm, After the pavement patch work on April 23, 2009, a drastic subsidence occurred together with 10mm swell, For this reason, Twin-Jet grout column construction was applied by passing through the EPS banking blocks without closing traffic flows on the express highway. The outcomes of core sample tests after reinforcing the ground turned out to be TCR 92.5%, RQD 64.6% and unconfined compressive strength 2.3~8.6Mpa. The test results showed that the condition of the ground foundation had improved using Twin-Jet grouting in most layers of ground including the cobble and gravel layer.

  • There are various schemes to improve the environment of a rir in which we dwell. Among them environment color is one of formative elements that compose a city environment, the recognition about it is coming to be high gradually. A stabilized appropriate color of city environment gives a psychological social cultural effect to the people and also can be a useful method even in public information of city image, To give a citizen sensitive aesthetic and emotional satisfaction, a systematic rational design approach is necessary in an environment color plan. Hereupon, this study suggests one model of a concrete substantial color design through analyzing a present condition, for example, an existing environment, a case study about similar space, and a question investigation for finding out preference image and applying them to the color design. Through a rational systematic environment color design one can expect several effects making identity in a region, increasing a peculiar image or unity reinforcement by total application of color scheme, creating a visual environment with aesthetic characteristic, and efficiency of continuous color management system.

  • This paper presents the design case of the 3-arch tunnel under Daejeon railroad station building. The original construction method was the underpinning method supported by pipe-roof, but it was changed to the mined tunnelling method because of the complex construction condition and the safety problem. This 3-arch tunnel has a width of 28 meters and a height of 10 meters. Overburden is only 23m and the ground around the tunnel is a weathered rock. The allowable settlements for the station building and some railroads are very strict. Accordingly, various measurements for the tunnel stability and the settlement minimization was applied and they were reviewed by 2-D and 3-D numerical analysis.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate applicability of epoxy injection method to cracked RC beams and structural behavior of repaired RC beams considering pre-loading conditions. For this purpose, five test beams were fabricated under two experimental variables. The main variables of this experimental study were pre-loading conditions and repair methods. The two pre-loading conditions were selected as $70\%$ and $90\%$ of nominal strength and the repair methods were to repair the cracked RC beams under free loading after crack and sustained loading. The comparative study was executed to evaluate effects of pre-loading conditions on the structural behavior of the cracked RC beams after crack-repair. The strains of reinforcement and concrete and deflections of beams at each loading step were measured and evaluated. As the results of this study, repair methods have much influence on structural behavior of epoxy injected RC beams and epoxy injection method for cracks of RC structures is appeared to be efficient.
