  • Prior to the introduction of modern seismic guidelines, it was a common practice to provide straight bar anchorage for beam bottom reinforcement of gravity load designed building. Exterior joints with straight bar anchorages for beam bottom reinforcements are susceptible to sudden anchorage failure under load reversals and hence require systematic seismic upgradation. Hence in the present study, an attempt is made to upgrade exterior beam-column sub-assemblage of a three storied gravity load designed (GLD) building with single steel haunch. Analytical formulations are presented for evaluating the haunch forces in single steel haunch retrofit. Influence of parameters that affect the efficacy and effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit are also discussed. The effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit for enhancing seismic performance of GLD beam-column specimen is evaluated through experimental investigation under reverse cyclic loading. The single steel haunch retrofit had succeeded in preventing the anchorage failure of beam bottom bars of GLD specimen, delaying the joint shear damage and partially directing the damage towards the beam. A remarkable improvement in the load carrying capacity of the upgraded GLD beam-column sub-assemblage is observed. Further, a tremendous improvement in the energy dissipation of about 2.63 times that of GLD specimen is observed in the case of upgraded GLD specimen. The study also underlines the efficacy of single steel haunch retrofit for seismic upgradation of deficient GLD structures.

  • Hollow reinforced concrete columns confined with GFRP tubes (GRCH) are composite members composed of the outer GFRP tube, the PVC or other plastic tube as the inner tube, and the reinforced concrete between two tubes. Because of their high ductility, light weight, corrosion resistance and convenient construction, many researchers pay attention to the composite members. However, there are few studies on GRCH members under eccentric compression compared with those under axial compression. Eight hollow columns were tested under eccentric compression, including one axial compression column and seven eccentric compression columns. The failure modes and force mechanisms of GRCH members were analyzed, considering the varying in hollow ratio, reinforcement ratio and eccentricity. The test results showed that configuring steel bars can greatly increase the bearing capacity and ductility of the members. Each component (GFRP tube, concrete, steel bar) had good deformation coordination and the strength of each material could be fully utilized. But for specimens with larger eccentricity ratio (er=0.4) and larger hollow ratio (χ=0.55), the restraining effect of GFRP tube on concrete was significantly decreased.

  • With the increase of the skyscraper center, the development of large-diameter and high-strength reinforcing bars is being carried out to solve the dense reinforcement. In case of the steel reinforced concrete with a small cross section such as beam-column joints, the development length becomes short when straight bars are used. Therefore, it is possible to solve the problem that the development length becomes short by using the bearing strength of the hooked bar and headed bar. In this study, the exterior beam-column joint test of SD700 hooked bar and headed bar with anchorage length of 20db was conducted to extend the development length limitation of hooked bar and headed bar. As a result of the evaluation of the anchorage strength using the design equation by KCI, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.31 for the hooked reinforcing bars. In the case of headed bars, the average of the [measured value]/[predicted value] ratio was 1.12. In addition, in order to compare the anchorage performance of the hooked bar and the headed bar, the measured values were divided by the square root of the compressive strength of the concrete to compare the anchorage strength. Under the same conditions, the anchorage strength of headed bars was 8.5% higher than the hooked bars.

  • This study experimentally investigated the flexural capacity of a concrete beam reinforced with a newly developed GFRP bar that overcomes the lower modulus of elasticity and bond strength compared to a steel bar. The GFRP bar was fabricated by thermosetting a braided pultrusion process to form the outer fiber ribs. The mechanical properties of the modulus of elasticity and bond strength were enhanced compared with those of commercial GFRP bars. In the four-point bending test results, all specimens failed according to the intended failure mode due to flexural design in compliance with ACI 440.1R-15. The effects of the reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength were investigated. Equations from the code were used to predict the deflection, and they overestimated the deflection compared with the experimental results. A modified model using two coefficients was developed to provide much better predictive ability, even when the effective moment of inertia was less than the theoretical $I_{cr}$. The deformability of the test beams satisfied the specified value of 4.0 in compliance with CSA S6-10. A modified effective moment of inertia with two correction factors was proposed and it could provide much better predictability in prediction even at the effective moment of inertia less than that of theoretical cracked moment of inertia.

  • Bond between reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete is supposed to safely transfer load in the design process of reinforced concrete structures. Bar with high relative rib area will be studied further not only static load but also dynamic loading conditions to sustain better performance of bond for reinforced concrete structures under earthquake. To determine the bond behavior of high ribbed bars in beam and column joints under repeated loads, 31 pullout specimens were tested. Bond strength increases as relative rib area increases. Also the effect of relative rib area on bond is larger in cyclic loading than in monotonic loading.

  • The success of analyzing the behavior of reinforced concrete structures at elevated temperature greatly depends on how accurately certain thermal properties, especially thermal expansion, specific heat and density thermal conductivity can be determined in a wide temperature range. In this Paper, in order to Predict the behavior of reinforced concrete structure in fire hazards thermal expansion characteristics of normal concrete are formulated through experimental investigation.
