This study aims at the development of computer Program for the deformation analysis of soft clay layers, and using this computer program, study the constraint effect of deformation- heaving, lateral displacement-of the soft clay layers reinforced with sheet pile at the tip of banking or improvement of soft clay layer up to hard strata, under intact state (natural) and the state of vertical drain respectively. For this study, Biot's consolidation theories and modified Cam-clay theory for constitutive equation for FEMI were selected and coupled governing equation, and christian-Boehmer's technique was applied to solve the coupled relationship. The following results are obtained. 1. Sheet pile or improvement of soft clay layer to the hard strata work well against the settlement of neighboring ground. B. In view of restriction of heaving or lateral displacement, sheet pile is not supposed to be of use. 3. Sheet pile is of effect only when vertical drain is constructed for acceleration of consolidation and load increases gradually. B. The larger the rigidity of improvement of layer to hard strata is, the less settlement occurs.
Epoxy/S2-glass reinforced composites (SGRPs) infused with Cloisite 30B nanoclays were manufactured using the vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) process. Prior to infusion, the matrix and clays were thoroughly mixed using a direct mixing technique (DMT) and a high shear mixing technique (HSMT) to ensure uniform dispersion of the nanoclays. Structures with varying clay contents (1-3 wt%) were manufactured. Both pristine and SGRP nanocomposites were then subjected to mechanical testing. For the specimens manufactured by DMT, the tensile, flexural, and compressive modulus increased with increasing the clay content. Similarly, the tensile, flexural, compressive, interlaminate shear and impact strength increased with the addition of 1 wt% clay: however the trend reversed with further increase in the clay content. Specimens manufactured by HSMT showed superior properties compared to those of nanocomposites containing 1 wt% clay produced by DMT. In order to understand these phenomena a morphological study was conducted. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed that HSMT led to better dispersion and changed the nanoclay structure from orderly intercalation to disorderly intercalation giving multi-directional strength.
A numerical study has been conducted to examine the improvement achieved in the ultimate pullout capacity of horizontal circular anchor plates embedded in undrained clay, by constructing granular columns of varying diameter over the anchor plates. The analysis has been carried out by using lower bound theorem of limit analysis and finite elements in combination with linear programming. The improvement in uplifting capacity of anchor plate is expressed in terms of an efficiency factor (${\xi}$). The efficiency factor (${\xi}$) has been defined as the ratio of ultimate vertical pullout capacity of anchor plate having diameter D embedded in soft clay reinforced by granular column to the vertical pullout capacity of the anchor plate with same diameter D embedded in soft clay only. The variation of efficiency factor (${\xi}$) for different embedment ratios and different diameter of granular column has been studied considering a wide range of softness of clay and different value of soil internal friction angle (${\phi}$) of the granular material. It is observed that ${\xi}$ increases with an increase in diameter of the granular column ($D_t$) and increase in friction angle of granular material. Also, the effectiveness of the usage of granular column increases with decrease in cohesion of the clay.
The strengthening efficiency of biopolymer treated soil depends on biopolymer type, concentration ratio, soil type, initial water content, curing time and mixing method. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of xanthan gum (XG) treated kaolinite were investigated through compaction test, Atterberg limit test, triaxial test and unconfined compression test. The results indicated that the optimum water content (OWC) increased from 30.3% of untreated clay to 33.5% of 5% XG treated clay, while the maximum dry density has a slight increase from 13.96 kg/m3 to 14 kg/m3 of 0.2% XG treated clay and decrease to 2.7 kg/m3 of 5% XG treated clay. Meanwhile, the plastic limit of XG treated clay increased with the increase of XG concentration, while 0.5% XG treated clay can be observed the maximum liquid limit with 79.5%. Moreover, there are the ideal water content about 1.3-1.5 times of the optimum water content achieving the maximum dry density and curing time to obtain the maximum compressive strength for different XG contents, which the UCS is 1.52 and 2.07 times of the maximum UCS of untreated soil for 0.5% and 1% XG treated clay, respectively. In addition, hot-dry mixing can achieve highest UCS than other mixing methods (e.g., dry mixing, wet mixing and hot-wet mixing).
This study aimed at the strength increase of the soft ground and analyzed the strength characteristics of clay soil reinforced with hair fiber which is environmentally friendly. The study varied the length of hair fiber, the amount of hair fiber, the amount of cement, and curing days to investigate both the compressive and tensile strengths and the stress-strain relationship of hair fiber mixed clay soils. The test results indicated that both the compressvie and tensile strengths increased with hair fiber mixed, especially in the tensile strength. In addition, the hair fiber mixed clay soil allowed larger displacement to failure. Based on the test results, it is thought that the environmentally friendly hair fiber could be utilized practically to increase the clay strength in the future.
Earth reinforcement by using geogrids as reinforcing materials are widely applied to several earth structures. The bearing capacity of geogrid reinforced foundation soils is usually examined on based on the rigid plasticity theory or Limit Equilibrium Method. Method of analysis such Limit Equilibrium Method provide no detail information about failure behaviour or strain which develop in the reinforcement or foundation. In this paper the analysis of failure behaviour of strip footing on geogrid-reinforced sand over a soft caly was investigated by using a numerical method. A series of finite element analyses were performed on a geogrid-reinforced strip footing over a soft clay including number of geogrid layers, length, depth. We effectively investigated the failure behaviour and improvement of bearing capacity on the reinforced foundation soil by using FEM program.
Laboratory model tests to determine the permanent settlement of a surface strip foundati on supported by geogrid -reinforced saturated clay and subjected to a low -frequency cyclic load were performed. In conducting the test, the foundation was initially subjected to an allowable static load. The cyclic load was then super -imposed over the static load. The variation of the maximum permanent settlement with the intensity of the static load and the intensity of the amplitude of the cyclic load are also presented.

Sand Compaction Pile method is one of the widely used ground improvement techniques at loose sand or soft clay ground in Asian countries. However, due to environmental and economical problems concerning shortage of sand resources alternative materials are needed to substitute sand for SCP. This study is on the applicability of slag as an alternative material SCP. Consolidation and direct shear test are performed for the slag-clay composite specimens to find out the positive effects of consolidation rate and shear resistance of slag reinforced ground. The result shows that slag has similar effects with sand in consolidation and shear resistance behavior in composite ground, which says slag can be used as alternative material of sand for SCP.

The masonry structure is constructed by cement mortar binding material of brick objects and uses reinforced hardware (connected hardware or wall tie) together when building. However, over time, the corrosion of reinforced steel and the deterioration of joint mortar as well as bricks cause the risk of collapse. In particular, when the externally decorated brick wall is installed on the concrete girder for each floor, the angle bracket is not constructed or corroded, the full-layer weight load is applied to the wall of 0.5B, which is an example of full-scale or collapse. The purpose of this study is to provide numerical information on the reinforcement design by experimentally studying the structural performance of concrete reinforcement brackets that reinforce the vertical load of the exterior wall.
