  • Realistic assessment of the performance of reinforced concrete structural members like columns is needed for designing new structures or maintenance of the existing structural members. This assessment requires analytical capability of employing proper material models and cyclic rules and considering various load and displacement patterns. A computer application was developed to analyze the non-linear, cyclic flexural performance of reinforced concrete structural members under various types of loading paths including non-sequential variations in axial load and bi-axial cyclic load or displacement. Different monotonic material models as well as hysteresis rules, were implemented in a fiber-based moment-curvature and in turn force-deflection analysis, using proper assumptions on curvature distribution along the member, as in plastic-hinge models. Performance of the program was verified against analytical results by others, and accuracy of the analytical process and the implemented models were evaluated in comparison to the experimental results. The computer application can be used to predict the response of a member with an arbitrary cross section and various type of lateral and longitudinal reinforcement under different combinations of loading patterns in axial and bi-axial directions. On the other hand, the application can be used to examine analytical models and methods using proper experimental data.

  • Small-size buildings are not designed by professional structural engineers in Korea. Therefore, their seismic performance can not be exactly estimated because their member sizes and reinforcement may be over- or under-designed. A prescriptive design criteria for the small-size buildings exists, but it also provides over-designed structural members since structural analysis is not incorporated, so it is necessary to revise the prescriptive criteria. The goal of this study was to provide an information for the revision, which is seismic performance and capability of small-size reinforced concrete moment frame buildings. For the study, the state of existing small-size reinforce-concrete buildings such as member size and reinforcement was identified by investigating their structural drawings. Then, over-strength, ductility and response modification factor of the small-size reinforced concrete moment frame buildings were estimated by analytical approach along with seismic performance check. The result showed that they possess moderate over-strength and ductility, and may use slightly increased response modification factor.

  • Tensile behavior in concrete has been neglected until recently. However, the effect of tensile stresses in concrete must be considered where the member primarily carries tensile forces or when ultimate strength is affected by the cracking history. In this paper, a series of experiments were performed with a reinforced rectangular beams of 15 specimens in order to investigate the effect of tension stiffening into the nonlinear analysis and cracking behavior. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of load-deflection curves and strain fracture energy with respect to the main experimental variables such as types of specimen, strength of concrete and steel ration. The results from experiments and finite element analysis were compared in terms of load-deflection relationship and cracking pattern. The results are as follows ; The tension stffening effects of reinforced concrete beams were observedc up to yielding of members after cracking showing strain energy difference of 35 % at the beam of 0.57% steel ratio compared with that of beam ignoring the tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening of concrete strength 400kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 600kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ increased by 8% and 13%, respectively, compared with that of concrete strength 200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The tension stiffening effects were greater at a ductile member rather than a brittle one. The load-deflection results of finite element analysis showed very similar results from experiment. The crack growth and pattern might be predicted from the nonlinear finite element analysis considering concrete stiffening.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected. local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • This paper discusses the composite mechanism and its effect upon the behavior of a steel reinforced concrete (SRC) member subjected to a flexural load. The relationship between member strength and deformation is established using the bond strength between the steel and reinforced concrete. An analytical model is proposed and used to incorporate the sectional strains and bond strength at the elastic and inelastic stages for moment-curvature relationship derivation. The results from the flexural load tests are used to validate the accuracy of the proposed model. Comparisons between the experimental information and the analytical results demonstrate close moment-curvature relevance, which justifies the applicability of the proposed method.

  • A ground motion resulting from the destructive earthquakes can subject reinforced concrete members to very large forces. The reinforced concrete shear walls are designed as earthquake-resistant members of building structure in order to prevent severe damage due to the ground motions. The current research activities on seismic behavior of reinforced concrete member under ground motions have been limited to the shaking table test or equivalent static cyclic test and the obtained results have been summarized and proposed for the seismic design retrofit of structural columns or shear walls. The present study predicted the seismic response and failure behavior of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to base acceleration using the finite element method. A decrease in strength and stiffness, yielding of reinforcing bar, and repetition of crack closing and opening due to seismic load with cyclic nature are accompanied by the crack which is necessarily expected to take place in concrete member. In this study the nonlinear material models for concrete and reinforcing bar based on biaxial stress field and algorithm of dynamic analysis were combined to construct the analytical program using the finite element method. The analytical seismic response and failure behaviors of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to several base accelerations were compared with reliable experimental result.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical expression for computing crack angles based on reinforcement volumes in the longitudinal and transverse directions, member end-fixity and length-to-width aspect ratio. For this a reinforced concrete beam-column element is assumed to possess a series of potential crack planes represented by a number of differential truss elements. Depending on the boundary condition, a constant angle truss or a variable angle truss is employed to model the cracked structural concrete member. The truss models are then analyzed using the virtual work method of analysis to relate forces and deformations. Rigorous and simplified solution schemes are presented. An equation to estimate the theoretical crack angle is derived by considering the energy minimization on the virtual work done over both the shear and flexural components the energy minimization on the virtual work done over both the shear and flexural components of truss models. The crack angle in this study is defined as the steepest one among fan-shaped angles measured from the longitudinal axis of the member to the diagonal crack. The theoretical crack angle predictions are validated against experimentally observed crack angle reported by previous researchers in the literature. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.

  • In the Ultimate Strength Design, the design strength of a member is determined by multiplying the strength reduction factor to the nominal strength. This concept may be a reasonable approach, however it can not consider failure modes appropriately. Moreover, column design strength diagram show an abrupt change at a low level of axial load, which does not seem to be reasonable. This research compares the design strength determined by the strength resistance factors. As the material resistance factors for flexure and compression, 0.65 and 0.90 are proposed for concrete and steel, respectively. The design strength calculation process by applying material resistance factors addresses failure modes more effectively than by applying member strength reduction factor, and provides more resnable design strength for reinforced concrete flexural and compression members.

  • In recent years the research and development about the new material proceeds rapidly and actively in building industry. We are concerned with high-strength concrete as a new material. As the building structure becomes bigger, higher and more specialized, so does the demand of material and member with high strength for building expands greatly. In the future, we will quite need to research repair and rehabilitation to make high strength concrete structural building for our safe. So, I did an study on carbon fiber sheet rehabilitation(CFSR) of reinforced high strength concrete beams. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) bonding method is widely used for reinforcing the existing concrete structure among the various methods. The test results indicate that CFS is very effective for strengthening the damaged beams and controlling deflections of the repaired beams. When carbon fiber sheet rehabilitation of reinforced high strength concrete beams happened diagonal crack, the increase in the number of CFS layer didn't effect the increase in strength of beams. Also, by changing the CFS stick position gave diversified ultimate load in CFSR beams.
