  • A 30-year-old male novice golfer was diagnosed with a clay-shoveler's fracture. During golf practice, he experienced persistent posterior neck and upper back pain for a month. Cervical radiographs and computed tomography revealed a series of sequential spinous process fractures from C7 to T3. The patient was prescribed analgesic medication and fitted with a cervical brace alongside extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) directed explicitly toward the upper back region, subsequently leading to a notable reduction in pain. Therefore, ESWT could be considered an additional method for pain management in patients with clay-shoveler's fractures.

  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disease that requires multidisciplinary medical care, including rehabilitation management. The emergence of a genetic therapy-based approach for SMA has markedly changed the disease course. Nonetheless, currently, updated physical therapy and rehabilitation are warranted for individuals with SMA in the era of gene therapy. In this review, we discuss the physical therapy and rehabilitation strategies currently performed for people with SMA, such as positioning and bracing, supported standing, management of musculoskeletal deformities, stretching, physical exercise training like aerobics and strengthening exercises, assistive devices, pulmonary rehabilitation, and dysphagia treatment.

  • Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a severe disease that usually needs surgical treatment. We have treated two CSM patients with Korean traditonal medicine, which includes acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine and manual treatment (Chuna). For objective evaluation, we used Nurick's classification, JOA (Japanses Orthopedic Association) score, grip and release test and hand grasping power measurement. Post-treatment analysis has shown that grip and release test score and grasping power of two patients were both remarkably improved, along with the improvements on both Nurick's classification and JOA score. This study showed that Korean traditional medicine could be effective conservative treatment for CSM.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of complex rehabilitation with and without acupuncture in a hospital setting. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was performed at Rehabilitation center "Kamenskoe Plato" in Almaty, Kazakhstan. 160 patients with Post COVID-19 condition were randomly equally divided into an acupuncture with complex rehabilitation methods and a only complex rehabilitation methods group in the period from March 1, 2022 to July 1, 2022. Either groups was performed for an 10-14 days period. The outcome measures were the Bartel index, the Borg scale, Modified Dyspnea Scale and the 6-minute walking test. Adverse events also were monitored and documented. Results: We found statistically significant improvement after the rehabilitation course with acupuncture in the all scales. And in the group without acupuncture, only on two scales: MDS and Borg scale. Conclusion: Rehabilitation with acupuncture is possible and effective in patients recovering from post-COVID-19. Our findings may be useful to guide clinicians taking care of patients with post-COVID-19.

  • Objectives This study is aimed to evaluate the feasibility of further clinical research of warm needle acupuncture as an effective and safe treatment for chronic low back pain. Methods Thirty participants will be randomly assigned to the Warm needle acupuncture group (n=15) and Dry needle acupuncture group (n=15). All patients will receive acupuncture therapy twice a week for 6 weeks, but only the experimental group will receive thermal stimulation. The primary outcome will be measured using the visual analogue scale for bothersomeness of low back pain, and the secondary outcome will be measured using the VAS for pain intensity, Oswestry disability index, 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Beck's depression inventory, and amount of analgesics used. Conclusions The results of this study will be used to determine the feasibility of a future large-scale randomized controlled trial that provides clinical evidence for the efficacy and safety of warm needle acupuncture in the treatment of patients with chronic low back pain.

  • Bertolotti's syndrome is a rare spinal disease and it is known to cause low back pain due to a lumbosacral transitional vertebra. There has been rare study of Bertolotti's syndrome. This study reports the effects of Korean medicine treatment on the patient who was diagnosed on Bertolotti's syndrome. The patient was treated with Korean medicine treatment including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, and Chuna manual therapy during 40 days. Numerical rating scale (NRS), Euroqol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, Oswestry disability index (ODI), lumbar range of motion were used for assessment. After treatment, low back pain NRS decreased from 3 to 2, and low limb pain NRS decreased from 5 to 2. EQ-5D index, ODI and lumbar range of motion also were improved. This study shows Korean medicine treatment can be an effective care for Bertolotti's syndrome.
