Dynamic analysis of slack moored spar platform with 5 MW wind turbine

  • Spar platforms have several advantages for deploying wind turbines in offshore for depth beyond 120 m. The merit of spar platform is large range of topside payloads, favourable motions compared to other floating structures and minimum hull/deck interface. The main objective of this paper is to present the response analysis of the slack moored spar platform supporting 5MW wind turbine with bottom keel plates in regular and random waves, studied experimentally and numerically. A 1:100 scale model of the spar with sparD, sparCD and sparSD configuration was studied in the wave basin ($30{\times}30{\times}3m$) in Ocean engineering department in IIT Madras. In present study the effect of wind loading, blade dynamics and control, and tower elasticity are not considered. This paper presents the details of the studies carried out on a 16 m diameter and 100 m long spar buoy supporting a 90 m tall 5 MW wind turbine with 3600 kN weight of Nacelle and Rotor and 3500 kN weight of tower. The weight of the ballast and the draft of the spar are adjusted in such a way to keep the centre of gravity below the centre of buoyancy. The mooring lines are divided into four groups, each of which has four lines. The studies were carried out in regular and random waves. The operational significant wave height of 2.5 m and 10 s wave period and survival significant wave height of 6 m and 18 s wave period in 300 m water depth are considered. The wind speed corresponding to the operational wave height is about 22 knots and this wind speed is considered to be operating wind speed for turbines. The heave and surge accelerations at the top of spar platform were measured and are used for calculating the response. The geometric modeling of spar was carried out using Multisurf and this was directly exported to WAMIT for subsequent hydrodynamic and mooring system analysis. The numerical results were compared with experimental results and the comparison was found to be good. Parametric study was carried out to find out the effect of shape, size and spacing of keel plate and from the results obtained from present work ,it is recommended to use circular keel plate instead of square plate.

부소파제의 부체 개발을 위한 기초적 실험 연구 (A Preliminary Experiment Study for Development of Floater of Floating Breakwater)

  • 해양의 활용범위를 확대시키기 위해서 방파제는 필수적인 요소이며 특히 친환경적인 부소파제의 활용은 증대될 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구에서는 친환경 소재인 폴리에틸렌 파이프와 시트를 활용하여 새로운 개념의 부소파제용 부체를 개발하며, 이에 대한 소파 성능평가를 위하여 기초적 실험연구를 수행한다. 입사되는 파랑은 연결된 파이프와 시트를 통과하면서 일부는 반사되고 일부는 투과되는데, 투과되는 파랑은 파이프를 지나면서 와류유기가 발생하여 파랑 에너지가 소멸된다. 따라서 입사파랑 에너지를 감소시킬 수 있다. 개발된 부체의 성능평가를 위하여 규칙파 및 붙규칙파에 대한 수리모형 실험을 수행한다. 입사파랑 주기가 6초 이하 조건에서는 소파 성능이 양호하였으나, 장주기의 입사파랑에 대해서는 부체 전체가 해수면과 같이 거동하면서 소파성능을 거의 나타내지 못하였다. 향후 소파성능 개선을 위한 추가적인 연구가 요구되어진다.

다원주 파일군 구조물에 의한 항내 정온도 향상에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the improvement of harbor tranquility by Multi-cylinder piles Structure)

  • 연안역의 파랑을 효율적으로 제어하고 경제적으로 유리한 구조물로서 다원주 파일군을 제안하고, 이 구조물의 수리학적 특성을 검토하기 위해 3차원 수리모형실험을 수행하였다. 이 실험에서는 콘크리트를 사용한 기존의 파제제와 아크릴로 제작된 다원주 파일 형태를 이용한 구조물을 동일 평면배치 상에서 파고분석을 통해 파랑제어 및 항내 정온도 향상 여부를 분석하였다. 결과적으로 동일 평면배치 상에서의 항내 정온도 효과는 파제제 설치 > 교차 배열 다원주 파일군 설치 > 정방형 배열 다원주 파일군 설치 순으로 나타났다.

Dynamic Response Analyses of Fixed Type Substructures for 2.5MW Class Offshore Wind Turbine

  • This paper explores a series of numerical simulations of dynamic responses of multi-piles (dolphin) type substructures for 2.5MW class offshore wind turbine. Firstly computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to evaluate wave loads on the dolphin type substructures with the design wave condition for the west-south region of Korea. Numerical wave tank (NWT) based on CFD was adopted to generate numerically a progressive regular wave using a virtual piston type wave maker. It was found that the water-piercing area of piles of the substructure is a key parameter determining the wave load exerted in horizontal direction. In the next the dynamic structural responses of substructure members under the wave load were calculated using finite element analysis (FEA). In the FEA approach, the dynamic structural responses were able to be calculated including a deformable body effect of substructure members when wave load on each member was determined by Morison's formula. The paper numerically identifies dynamic response characteristics of dolphin type substructures for 2.5MW class offshore wind turbine.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL FREE-SURFACE FLOW AND WAVE TRANSFORMATION OVER CONSTANT-SLOPE BOTTOM TOPOGRAPHY

  • A method for the numerical simulation of two-dimensional free-surface flow resulting from the propagation of regular gravity waves over topography with arbitrary bottom shape is presented. The method is based on the numerical solution of the Euler equations subject to the fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions and the appropriate bottom, inflow and outflow conditions using a hybrid finite-differences and spectral-method scheme. The formulation includes a boundary-fitted transformation, and is suitable for extension to incorporate large-eddy simulation (LES) and large-wave simulation (LWS) terms for turbulence and breaking wave modeling, respectively. Results are presented for the simulation of the free-surface flow over two different bottom topographies, with constant slope values of 1:10 and 1:20, two different inflow wave lengths and two different inflow wave heights. An absorption outflow zone is utilized and the results indicate minimum wave reflection from the outflow boundary. Over the bottom slope, lengths of waves in the linear regime are modified according to linear theory dispersion, while wave heights remain more or less unchanged. For waves in the nonlinear regime, wave lengths are becoming shorter, while the free surface elevation deviates from its initial sinusoidal shape.

추파중(追波中)에서 항행(航行)하는 선체(船體)에 작용(作用)하는 파강제력(波强制力)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Wave Exciting Forces Acting on Ships in Following Seas)

  • When a ship is travelling in following seas, the encounter frequency is reduced to be very low. In that case broaching phenomenon is most likely to occur, and it may be due to wave exciting forces acting on ships. It is thought that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas almost consist of two components. One is hydrostatic force due to Froude-Krylov hypothesis, and the other is hydrodynamic lift force due to orbital motion of water particles below the wave surface. In the present paper, the emphasis is laid upon wave exciting sway force, yaw moment and roll moment acting on ships in following seas. The authers take the case that the component of ship speed in the direction of wave propagation is equal to the wave celerity, i.e., the encounter frequency is zero. Hydrostatic force components are calculated by line integral method on Lewis form plane, and hydrodynamic lift components are calculated by lifting surface theory. Furthermore captive model tests are carried out in regular following waves generated by means of a wave making board. Through the comparison between calculated and measured values, it is confirmed that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas can be predicted in terms of present method to a certain extent.

Dynamic Behavior Assessment of OC4 Semi-submersible FOWT Platform Through Morison Equation

  • This paper proposes an effective inertia coefficient (EIC) in the Morison equation for better wave-force calculations. The OC4 semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platform was considered to test the feasibility. Large diffraction at large Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) numbers and the interaction between columns can result in errors in estimating the wave force using the Morison equation with a theoretical inertia coefficient, which can be corrected by the EIC as a function of the wave period and direction. The horizontal and vertical wave forces were calculated using the Morison equation and potential theory at each column, wave period, and wave direction. The EICs of each column were then obtained, resulting in a minimal difference between the Morison inertia force and the wave excitation force by the potential theory. The EICs, wave forces, phase angles, and dynamic motions were compared to confirm the feasibility of an EIC concept under regular and random waves.

KCS 선형의 규칙파 중 구속모형시험에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Captive Model Test of KCS in Regular Waves)

  • In order to investigate maneuvering characteristics of KCS in waves, captive model test in regular waves was conducted. Purpose of the test is measuring maneuvering hull forces when ship is maneuvering in waves. Model test was carried out using CPMC (Computerized Planar Motion Carriage) of ocean engineering basin in KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering). Total 6 degrees-of-freedom motion were fixed by two points supporting captive model test device, which is specially designed for this test. This system estimates 6 degrees-of-freedom forces and moments through 12 strain gauge signals. Mapping matrix from strain gauge signals to 6 degrees-of-freedom forces and moments was derived by a well-organized calibration test. Static drift test was conducted in calm sea and in regular waves with various wave conditions. Hydrodynamic coefficients related to drift angle were extracted for each wave conditions, and the effect of waves on course stability was analyzed.

Simulating three dimensional wave run-up over breakwaters covered by antifer units

  • The paper presents the numerical analysis of wave run-up over rubble-mound breakwaters covered by antifer units using a technique integrating Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Direct application of Navier-Stokes equations within armour blocks, is used to provide a more reliable approach to simulate wave run-up over breakwaters. A well-tested Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Volume of Fluid (VOF) code (Flow-3D) was adopted for CFD computations. The computed results were compared with experimental data to check the validity of the model. Numerical results showed that the direct three dimensional (3D) simulation method can deliver accurate results for wave run-up over rubble mound breakwaters. The results showed that the placement pattern of antifer units had a great impact on values of wave run-up so that by changing the placement pattern from regular to double pyramid can reduce the wave run-up by approximately 30%. Analysis was done to investigate the influences of surface roughness, energy dissipation in the pores of the armour layer and reduced wave run-up due to inflow into the armour and stone layer.

Computational study of the wave propagation in three-dimensional human cardiac tissue

  • We developed a three dimensional cardiac tissue model based on human cardiac cell and mono-domain approximation for action potential propagation. The human myocyte model proposed by ten Tusscher et al. (TNNP model) (2004) for cell electrophysiology and a mono-domain method for electric wave propagation are used to simulate the cardiac tissue propagation mechanism using a finite element method. To delineate non-homogeneity across cardiac tissue layer, we used three types of cardiac cell models. Ansiotropic effect of action potential propagation is also considered in this study. In this 3D anisotropic cardiac tissue with three cell layers, we generated a reentrant wave using S1-S2 protocol. Computational results showed that the reentrant wave was affected by the anisotropic properties of the cells. To test the reentrant wave under pathological state, we simulated a hypertopic model with non-excitable fibroblasts in stochastic manner. Compared with normal tissue, the hypertropic tissue result showed another center of reentrant wave, indicating that the wave pattern can be more easily changed from regular with a concentric focus to irregular multi-focused reentrant waves in case of patients with hypertrophy.
