This study aimed to understand the spatiotemporal variations in nitrogen content in the Gyeongan stream along the main stream and at the discharge points of the sub-basins, and to identify the origin of the nitrogen. Field surveys and laboratory analyses, including chemical compositions and isotope ratios of nitrate and boron, were performed from November 2021 to November 2022. Based on the flow duration curve (FDC) derived for the Gyeongan stream, the dry season (mid-December 2021 to mid-June 2022) and wet season (mid-June to early November 2022) were established. In the dry season, most samples had the highest total nitrogen(T-N) concentrations, specifically in January and February, and the concentrations continued to decrease until May and June. However, after the flood season from July to September, the uppermost subbasin points (Group 1: MS-0, OS-0, GS-0) where T-N concentrations continually decreased were separated from the main stream and lower sub-basin points (Group 2: MS-1~8, OS-1, GS-1) where concentrations increased. Along the main stream, the T-N concentration showed an increasing trend from the upper to the lower reaches. However, it was affected by those of the Osan-cheon and Gonjiamcheon, the tributaries that flow into the main stream, resulting in respective increases or decreases in T-N concentration in the main stream. The nitrate and boron isotope ratios indicated that the nitrogen in all samples originated from manure. Mechanisms for nitrogen inflow from manure-related sources to the stream were suggested, including (1) manure from livestock wastes and rainfall runoff, (2) inflow through the discharge of wastewater treatment plants, and (3) inflow through the groundwater discharge (baseflow) of accumulated nitrogen during agricultural activities. Ultimately, water quality management of the Gyeongan stream basin requires pollution source management at the sub-basin level, including its tributaries, from a regional context. To manage the pollution load effectively, it is necessary to separate the hydrological components of the stream discharge and establish a monitoring system to track the flow and water quality of each component.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of rice farming on seasonal, regional quality of shallow ground water. Ammonium $(NH_4\;^+)$ concentration of paddy soil was found to be the highest in April. Nitrate $(NO_3\;^-)$ concentration of soil and the ground water was determined to be lower during the growing period, May to August than any other periods. Seasonal change of K concentration in soils was shown to be in the tendency similar to that of $NH_4\;^+$. However, $Cl^-$ concentration of soils and the ground water was not changed significantly. $NH_4\;^+$, $NO_3\;^-$, K and $Cl^-$ concentration in W-3 ground water was higher than those of W-1 and W-2. It was clear that nutrients ($NH_4\;^+$, $NO_3\;^-$, K, $Cl^-$) should be leached from the adjacent soil to W-3 ground water by water stream. From this study it is apparent that nutrients can be easily leaching from sandy soils and transported into ground water, but rice plant farming is not non point source of groundwater pollution.

Cheonji, the largest caldera lake in Asia, is located at the summit of Baekdu Mountain. Cheonji is covered with snow and ice for about six months of the year due to its high altitude and its surrounding environment. Since most of the sources of water are from groundwater, the water temperature is closely related to the volcanic activity. However, in the 2000s, many volcanic activities have been monitored on the mountain. In this study, we analyzed the dimension of ice produced during winter in Baekdu Mountain using Sentinel-1 satellite image data provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). In order to calculate the dimension of ice from the backscatter image of the Sentinel-1 satellite, 20 Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) layers were generated from two polarization images using texture analysis. The method used in calculating the area was utilized with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to classify the GLCM layer which is to calculate the dimension of ice in the image. Also, the calculated area was correlated with temperature data obtained from Samjiyeon weather station. This study could be used as a basis for suggesting an alternative to the new method of calculating the area of ice before using a long-term time series analysis on a full scale.

This study carried out the density and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and particle size analysis which are the physical characteristics of coal dust by collecting samples of coal dust in the five domestic mines to control the coal dust through ventilation in the workplace for coal mining in the country. This will contribute to a more comfortable working environment by understanding the physical characteristics of the coal dust which is derived from any hard coal produced domestically. In particular, the result of PSA analysis showed that the size of coal dust sample for this study ranged from $0.007{\sim}88.614{\mu}m$ were the particles less than $3.5{\mu}m$, the size range responsible for pneumoconiosis. To observe the flow of coal dust collected on the wind speed, the fallout of coal dust produced by the wind tunnel for the wind was measured and the particle size analysis of coal dust fallout was carried out. In addition, airborne dust is measured according to the mine velocity by using a multi-stage Anderson sampler in the mine where fine dust is generated in a large amount and the wind speed is found out to control the coal dust below $3.5{\mu}m$. In addition, natural ventilation pressure of A mine was calculated to prevent over design of the main fan.
We have studied orientational characteristics of vertical rift and grain planes developing in 108 quarries for Mesozoic granites. Orientations of these planes vary in different localities. In general, orientations of these planes are predominantly NNE in South Korea. From the regional distribution chart, orientations of these planes show three dominant sets in terms of frequency orders: (1) $N2{\sim}10^{\circ}E(1st-order),\;(2)\;N15{\sim}25^{\circ}E(2nd-order),\;(3)\;N45{\sim}70^{\circ}E,\;N10{\sim}30^{\circ}W\;and\;N70{\sim}80^{\circ}W(3rd-order)$. These granite quarries are classified by the relative difference in the easiness of rock splitting between horizontal and vertical quarrying planes into: R-type, G-type, and H-type. The results showed that quarries for Triassic granites belong to R and G-types;those for Jurassic granites belong to R, G and H-types. In addition, quarries for Cretaceous granites belong mainly to R-type. Among these quarry types, the most diverse type was identified in the quarries for Jurassic granites. R-type (77.8%) shows a higher distribution ratio compared with G and H-types (22.2%). In general, anisotropy of physical properties is found in granitic rocks and there exists close correlation between orientations of granitic rock splitting planes and those of the open microcracks. Meanwhile, it has been reported that preferred orientations of open microcracks suggest maxinum principal stress orientations.
Hydrological drought is directly associated with lack of available water in rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater. It is important to analyze hydrological drought for efficient water resource management because most of rainfall is concentrated in wet seasons and water supply is highly dependent on dams and reservoirs in South Korea. Generally, a threshold level method is useful for defining hydrological droughts. However, this method causes interdependent problems between drought events which result in skewed results in further statistical analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to determine a proper threshold level to represent regional drought characteristics. In this study, applying 50~99 percentiles of daily flow-duration curve, hydrological drought events were extracted, and independence tests were conducted for 12 watersheds. The Poisson independence test showed that 87~99 percentiles were available for most stations except for Yeoju and Pyeongtaek. The generalized Pareto independence test showed that 80~90 percentiles were the most common. Mean excess plot showed that 80 ~ 90 percentiles were the most common. Therefore, the common ranges of the three independent tests were determined for each station and proper threshold levels were recommended for large river basins; 70~76 percentiles for the Han River basin, 87~91 percentiles for the Nakdong River basin, 86~98 percentiles for the Geum River basin, and 85~87 percentiles for the Youngsan and Seomjin River basin.
Alluviums in the Keum River watershed cover an areal extent of $3,029{\;}\textrm{km}^2$ and contain about 8.1 billion tons of groundwater. However, the waters are severely polluted by nitrate, possibly due to the application of nitrogen fertilizer (>250 N kg/ha) on agricultural land. This paper aims to elucidate the pollution status and behaviors of nitrate in alluvial groundwaters in the Keum River watershed area, based on regional hydrogeochemical study. Most of the collected samples (n = 186) are polluted by nitrate (average = 42.2 mg/L, maximum = 295 mg/L). About 29% of the samples have the nitrate concentrations exceeding Korean Drinking Water Standard (44 mg/L $NO_3$). The distribution of nitrate concentrations in the study area is largely dependant on geochemical environments of alluvial aquifers. In particular, the decrease of redox potential of alluvial groundwaters showed a good correlation with the decreases of nitrate, iron, and manganese concentrations. Thus, the change of redox state in alluvial aquifers, likely reflecting their sedimentary environments, controls both the behavior and fate of nitrogen compounds and their natural attenuation (denitrification) in aquifers. A carbon-rich, silty layer within alluvium strata forms a reducing condition and possesses a buffering capacity on nitrate pollution.
The studied Nangsan area is widely covered by the Jurassic biotite granodiorite, which is mainly light grey in color and medium-grained in texture. Results of the regional fracture pattern analysis for the granodiorite body are as follows. Strike directions of fractures show three dominant sets in terms of frequency order. The sets are in an order of a (1) $N80^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}E$ (1st-order)>(2) $N70^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}E$ (2nd-order)>(3) $NS{\sim}N10^{\circ}E$ (3rd-order). Spacings of the fractures are mostly predominant in less than 200 cm. Therefore, the granodiorite of the area has more potential for non-dimensional stones than dimension ones. And orientations of vertical quarrying planes can be also divided into two groups in terms of frequency $N14^{\circ}W{\sim}N16^{\circ}E$ (1st-order) and (2) $N78^{\circ}E{\sim}N88^{\circ}E$ (2nd-order). The orientations of the two groups are more or less different from those of the regional fracture patterns. These can be mainly attributed to the preferred orientations of microcrack developed in the quarries. Of physical properties, specific gravity, absorption ratio, porosity, compressive strength, tensile strength and abrasive hardness are 2.65, 0.28%, 0.73%, $1,628kg/cm^2,\;100kg/cm^2$ and 31, respectively. Contrary to the porosity, both granites of the Nangsan and Sogrisan areas show almost similar values of the abrasive hardness. These can be explained by the differences of Qz+Af modes, which can be regarded as an index for abrasive resistance. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that comprehensive understanding of the orientations of vertical quarrying planes and characteristics of various physical properties will be utilized as an important information for stone resources.
Pacific island countries, including Kiribati, are suffering from a shortage of essential resources as well as a reduction in their living space due to sea level rise and coastal erosion from climate change, groundwater pollution and vegetation changes. Global activities to solve these problems are being progressed by the UN's efforts to implement SDGs. Pacific island countries can adapt to climate change by using abundant marine resources. In other words, seawater plants can assist in achieving SDGs #2, #6 and #7 based on SDGs #14 in these Pacific island countries. Under the auspice of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) established the Sustainable Seawater Utilization Academy (SSUA) in 2016, and its 30 graduates formed the SSUA Kiribati Association in 2017. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea awarded ODA fund to the Association. By taking advantage of seawater resource and related plants, it was able to provide drinking water and vegetables to the local community from 2018 to 2020. Among the various fields of education and practice provided by SSUA, the Association hope to realize hydroponic cultivation and seawater desalination as a self-support project through a pilot project. To this end, more than 140 households are benefiting from 3-stage hydroponics, and a seawater desalination system in connection with solar power generation was installed for operation. The Association grows and supplies vegetable seedlings from the provided seedling cultivation equipment, and is preparing to convert to self-support business from next year. The satisfaction survey shows that Tarawa residents have a high degree of satisfaction with the technical support and its benefits. In the future, it is hoped that SSUA and regional associations will be distributed to neighboring island countries to support their SDGs implementations.
This study compares and analyzes the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Terra MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) as coniferous, deciduous and mixed forest with Yongdam Dam upstream (904.4 km2). The hydrologic evaluation period was set to 10 years from 2010 to 2019, and the applicability of the 8-day MOD15A2 Leaf Area Index (LAI) data, 3 TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) (GB, JC, CC), and 1 Flux Tower (DU) evaporation volume (YDD) data was simulated. As a result, the R2 of coniferous forest, deciduous forest and mixed forest are 0.95, 0.89, 0.90, soil moisture and evaportranspiration stations R2 were analyzed at 0.50 to 0.55 and 0.51, respectively, with R2 at 0.74, RMSE 2.75 mm/day, NSE 0.70 and PBIAS 14.3% for Yongdam inflow. Based on the calibrated and validated watersheds, the annual average evaportranspiration was calculated as coniferous 469.7 mm, deciduous 501. mm and 511.5 mm mixed forest, total runoff were estimated at coniferous 909.8 mm, deciduous 860.6 mm and 864.2 mm mixed forest. In the case of annual average evaportranspiration, it was evaluated that deciduous were high, but in the case of streamflow, it was evaluated that coniferous were high. Unlike other hydrologic with similar patterns throughout the year, the average annual evapotranspiration was about 7% higher than coniferous due to the higher evapotranspiration of deciduous with high leaf area index in summer and fall. In addition, deciduous were 9% and 6% higher for surface runoff and lateral flow, but the groundwater of coniferous was 77% higher. Therefore, it was confirmed that the total runoff was in order of coniferous, mixed forest, and deciduous.
