Air-source heat pumps are widely used in residential heating systems. However, the decrease in the capacity of the heat pump is unavoidable when operating at very low and high ambient temperatures. The vapor injection technique is considered a promising technology to overcome this problem. Recent research on vapor injection cycles have mainly adopted a scroll compressor with an internal heat exchanger at severe operating conditions. This study measured the COP and EER of a gas injection heat pump using a flash tank with an inverter-driven rotary compressor at severe operating conditions. Compared to non-injection heat pumps, the heating capacity and COP of the gas injection heat pump improved up to 15% and 2.9%, respectively, at outdoor temperatures of $-10^{\circ}C$ to $7^{\circ}C$. The cooling capacity of the gas injection heat pump was 11% higher than the non-injection heat pump at an outdoor temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. At the same time, the EER of the gas injection heat pump was similar to that of the non-injection heat pump.

The performance of a refrigerant mixture of propane(R290)/isobutane(R600a) as a substitute for CFC12 was investigated in a domestic refrigerator with single evaporator. A thermodynamic cycle simulation indicated an increase in COP of a 1.7 to 2.4% with R-290/600a in the composition range of 0.2 to 0.6 mass fraction of R290 compared to CFC12. For the tests, two units($299{\ell}$, $465{\ell}$) were used. All refrigeration components remained the same throughout the tests, except that the length of capillary tube and amount of charge were changed for the mixture. The refrigerators were fully instrumented with more than 20 thermocouples, 2 pressure transducers, and watt/watt-hour meter for each refrigerator. 'Energy consumption test' and 'no load pulldown test' were performed under the same condition. The experimental results obtained with the same compressor indicated that R-290/600a mixture at 0.6 mass fraction of R290 showed a 3 to 5% increase in energy efficiency and a faster cooling speed compared to CFC12. The R-290/600a mixture showed a shorter compressor on-time and a lower compressor dome temperature than CFC12. In conclusion, the proposed hydrocarbon mixture seems to be an appropriate candidate to replace CFC12 without causing more environmental problems.

Thermodynamic properties of R-32 are calculated and its refrigeration performance is evaluated for the purpose the feasibility study of replacing R-22 with R-32. (1) Refrigeration effect of R-32 is superior to that of R-22 because heat of evaporation of R 32 is about 50% higher than that of R-22. However, COP of R-32 system is 10-30% lower than that of R-22 system. It is mainly attributed to the vapor pressore of R-32 being about 62% higher than R-22. (2) Since the pressure ratio and the specific heat ratio of R-32 system is higher than those of R -22, compressor discharging temperature rises as high as to $130-150^{\circ}C$. It may cause mechanical failure of compressor due to the breakdown of lubricant. Compressor should be improved to lower the temperature if R-32 is to replace R-22. (3) Averaged two-phase heat transfer coefficient of R-32 is about 10-20% higher than that of R-22. It may assume better heat exchanger effectiveness but not guarantee the better COP of R-32 system than R-22. (4) The high vapor pressure is the first reason to drop R-32 out of the line of R-22 alternative refrigerant. So, refrigerant mixtures based on R-32 are recommended to adjust the vapor pressure first and keep superior volumetric capacity of R-32.

In order to reduce the compression power and to use the overall energy contained in LNG effectively, a combined cycle is devised and simulated. The combined cycle is composed of two cycles; one is an open cycle of liquid/solid carbon dioxide production cycle utilizing LNG cold energy in $CO_2$ condenser and the other is a closed cycle gas turbine which supplies power to the $CO_2$ cycle, utilizes LNG cold energy for lowering the compressor inlet temperature, and uses the heating value of LNG at the burner. The power consumed for the $CO_2$ cycle is investigated in terms of a production ratio of solid $CO_2$. The present study shows that much reduction in both $CO_2$ compression power (only $35\%$ of power used in conventional dry ice production cycle) and $CO_2$ condenser pressure could be achieved by utilizing LNG cold energy and that high cycle efficiency ($55.3\%$ at maximum power condition) in the gas turbine could be accomplished with the adoption of compressor inlet cooling and regenerator. Exergy analysis shows that irreversibility in the combined cycle increases linearly as a production ratio of solid $CO_2$ increases and most of the irreversibility occurs in the condenser and the heat exchanger for compressor inlet cooling. Hence, incoming LNG cold energy to the above components should be used more effectively.

The performance of a $CO_2$ heat pump water heater was measured with a variation of operating conditions such as refrigerant charge amount, outdoor temperature, compressor frequency, EEV opening, and water mass flow rate. The optimum refrigerant charge amount of the $CO_2$ system was 1800 g. At water mass flow rates of 75, 85, and 95 kg/h, the water heating temperatures were 74, 67, and $62^{\circ}C$ and COPs were 2.6, 2.8, and 3.0, respectively. Besides, the compressor frequency and water mass flow rate were adjusted to maintain the water heating temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ with the decrease of outdoor temperature. As the outdoor temperature decreased by $5^{\circ}C$, the compressor frequency increased beyond 60 Hz and the water mass flow rate decreased by 16.7%.
A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/ evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.

Performance factors such as the EER(Energy Efficiency Ratio) and the COP (Coefficient of Performance) are being replaced by seasonal energy efficiency factors, like the SEER (Seasonal EER) and the SCOP (Seasonal COP) to evaluate the performance of a heat pump by the time of the year. Seasonal performance factors, such as the CSPF (Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor) and the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) are used to describe the heat pump's performance during the cool and hot seasons. In this study, the optimization of all heat pump's operating parameters was experimentally conducted to enhance the SEER based on the EU standard (EN 14825). Moreover, the SEER was improved by the compressor frequency, as well as indoor and outdoor fan speeds. In addition, the performance characteristics of the heat pump were studied under partial load conditions. As a result, the SEER was enhanced by 17% when the compressor frequency was optimized. An additional 2% improvement was achievable with the optimization of indoor and outdoor fan speeds.
In this study, experimental study on the heating performance of a $CO_2$ heat pump water heater with a variation of operating conditions such as refrigerant charge amount, outdoor temperature, compressor frequency, EEV opening and water mass flow rate. Based on the test results, the optimum charge amount was 1800 g. At the water mass flow rates of 75, 85, 95 kg/hr, the water heating temperature was 62, 67, $74^{\circ}C$ and COP was 2.6, 2.8, 3.0, respectively. Besides, the water mass flow rate and compressor frequency were varied to maintain above the water heating temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ with the decrease of outdoor temperature. So, The compressor frequency increased beyond 65 Hz and the water mass flow rate was 45 kg/hr at the outdoor temperature of $-13^{\circ}C$, 65 kg/hr at $-8^{\circ}C$, 75 kg/hr at $-3^{\circ}C$ and 85 kg/hr at 2, $7^{\circ}C$. As the outdoor temperature decreased, the heating COP decreased by 2.5-39.8%.

Typical temperature control methods of a cooler for machine tools are hot-gas bypass and compressor variable speed control. The hot-gas bypass system has been widely used to control the cooler temperature in many general industrial fields. On the contrary, the compressor variable speed control is focused on special fields such as aerospace and high precision machine tools which need high precision control. The variable speed control system usually has two control variables such as target temperature and superheat. In other words, the variable speed control system is basically multi-input multi-output(MIMO) system. In spite of MIMO system, the proportional integral derivative(PID) feedback control methodology that based on single-input single-output (SISO) system is generally used for designing the variable speed control system. Therefore, it is inevitable to describe transfer functions for dynamic behaviors of every controlled variables and decide the PID gains with tremendous iteration process. Moreover, the designed PID gains do not provide optimum system performances. To solve these problems, high performance controller design method based on a state space model is suggested in this paper. An optimum controller is designed to minimize both control errors and energy inputs. This method was more simple to describe dynamic behaviors and easier to design the cooler controller which is MIMO system.
