유기물 박막에서의 광도파 현상 (Optical Waveguiding in the Polymerized Organic Films)

  • 슬라이드 글라스와 위에 1μm 가량의 산화막을 입힌 실리콘 웨이퍼 위에, 폴리우레탄이나 에폭시 등의 유기 물질을 스핀너 (spinner)로 코우팅시켜서 평판형 유전체 도파관(dielectric slab waveguide)을 제작하고, 프리즘으로 빛을 커플링 (coupling) 시켜서 광도파 현상을 화인했다. 실리콘 웨이퍼나 슬라이드 글라스 위에다 알루미늄이나 은(Ag)을 진공증착시킨 것을 기관으로 사용하여 금각판 도파관(metal clad waveguide)을 제작하고, 프리즘 2개로 커플링 (coupling), 디커플링 (decoupling)시켜서 모우드 라인(mode line)을 관찰했다. 포토리지스트 K. P. R.의 굴절율이 폴리우레탄의 굴절율보다 큰 점을 이용하여 2층 구조의 박막 프리즘을 제작하고 빛이 꺾이는 현상을 확인했다.

  • 발사체의 추력을 증진시키기 위해서 사용되는 고체 부스터나 궤도 투입을 위한 킥 모터 플룸의 주요 성분인 알루미나 입자의 복사물성을 도출하기 위해서 입자의 복사특성을 분석하였다. 특히 입자의 흡수나 산란현상이 파장의 함수이므로, 이를 전 파장에 대한 총방사율로 표현할 수 있도록 수식을 정리하였고, 입자의 크기 및 Complex Index of Refraction을 Mie 이론에 도입하여 최종적으로 총 방사율을 도출하였다. 결과적으로 방사율은 온도에 따라 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • The low-k SiOCH thin films were prepared by CCP-PECVD method using BTMSM(Bis-trimethylsilylmethane) precursors deposited on p-Si wafer. The structural complexity originate the complex refractive constants of the films, and resulted the elliptical polarization of the incident linearly polarized light source of Xe-ramp in the range from 190nm to 2100nm. Phase difference and amplitude ratio between s wave and p wave propagating through SiOCH thin film was studied. After annealing, the amplitude of p wave was reduced more than s wave, and phase difference between p and s wave was also reduced.

  • The optic industry is a high value-added advanced technology industry combined with the precision machine industry and the digital electronics industry. The aspheric lens, one of optic parts, is a key technology having a significant influence on the performance of optic equipment. So this study relates to designing an aspheric lens to which a ray-tracing method is applied. In the ray-tracing method, a refractive index of material is used, which take an advantage that the location of a light source and incident angle can be fixed, unlike the ray back-tracing scheme.

반사시트의 메커니즘 및 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Mechanism and Design of Reflective Sheet)

  • The shape and the material of a reflective sheet affect the amount and the range of retroreflection on incident angle of light, significantly. In this study, the method to determine the shape and the material of the reflective sheet is introduced for the maximum retroreflection. Since the microprism shape with an equilateral triangle base has been used widely, the shape optimization of the microprism shape is carried out. The path of the light within the prism is geometrically calculated to find the relationship between incoming and outgoing light to and from a microprism. The optimal shape of a microprism found by the simulation has almost same figure with the one being used in industry for the maximum retroreflection. It is also found that the refraction index of the reflective sheet is another parameter to control for maximum retroreflection and the range of retroreflection.

  • We have deposited hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) films by pulsed laser deposition of graphite. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) can be utilized to generate films with desired properties quite different from those of the starting material. Since DLC films grown by PLD using turbo pump are perpared without hydrogen, they have a higher density and a higher index of refraction than the hydrogenated DLC films. In this study, effects of the substrate temperature and laser energy density on the properties of DLC films were systematically investigated. The structure and properties of the films have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy.

Field Measurements of Wave Directionality in Water of Finite Depth

  • Field measurements of directional waves were carried out during the summer of 2002 at two coastal sites in water of finite depth. A couple of general purpose instruments were used employing acoustic Doppler technology. The aim of the study was to investigate the spatial behavior of the directional movement of waves as they come ashore. In total,74 tests were carried out during which sea states of low to moderate intensity were recorded. A great number of these runs displayed bimodal characteristics of the spreading function at high frequencies. It was found that in general, the frequency-integrated directional width tends to broaden as the water shoals and when refraction effects are negligible. This is attributed to wave-wave interactions that become pronounced in shallow water. The same directional width showed, also, a tendency to increase with increasing peak frequency of the sea state spectrum. The behavior of the kurtosis of the spreading function was also examined. It was found that for higher frequencies this index tends to increase in wave spectra above a certain sea severity threshold.

  • Titanium dioxide antireflection (AR) Coating, which is deposited on Si substrates using an organotitanium solution by the spinning technique, has been studied. The coated films on Si substrates were subsequently heated to $450^{\circ}C$. The thickness and index of refraction of films were varied continuousely from $740{\AA}$ to $1380{\AA}$ and from 1.7 to 2.1 respectively as a function of heat treatment temperature and time. Silicon solar cells AR-coated by the spinning technique showed as much as 31% improvement in conversion efficiency over the uncoated cell.

  • The power of semiconductor laser diodes has been limited primarily by the heating effects which occur at high optical intensities. The actual limiting event can take one of a number of forms such as. catastrophic optical damage or filamentation. A general approach to this problem is to design a heterostructure which creates a high powered output while maintaining low internal optical intensities. A graded index separate confinement heterostructure (GRIN-SCH) is one such structure that accomplishes the above task. Here, the active region is sandwiched between graded index layers where the index of refraction increases nearer to the active layer. This structure has been shown to yield a high efficiency due to the confinement of both the optical power and carriers, thereby reducing the optical intensity required to achieve higher powers. The optical confinement also reinforces the optical beam quality against high power effects. Quantum dots have long been a desirable option for laser diodes due to the enhanced optical properties associated with the zeroth dimensionality. In our work, we use PICS3D software created by Crosslight Software Inc. to simulate the performance of In0.67A10.33As/A10.2Ga0.8AsquantumdotsusedwithaGRIN-SCH. The simulation tools are used to optimize the GRIN-SCH structure for high efficiency and optical beam quality.
