  • Various technologies for new reflective LCDs with high performance are reviewed in this paper. Among of them, reflective STN-LCDs with single polarizor, novel single polarizor reflective LCDs based upon R-IPS mode and VA(vertical aligned) mode reflective color TFT-LCDs are discussed comprehensively. In addition, some new technologies which are under developed for the moment are also introduced briefly, including single polorizor reflective AF-LCDs (Antiferroelectric LCD) and reflective LCDS with none polorizor. Finally, we research the method to optimize the reflective LCDs.

  • Characteristics of reflective LCDs, which have gained a lot of notice in recent years, rely largely on optical design of circular polarizers and the quarter-wave plates, as a component. Important design includes wavelength dispersion, viewing angle, uniformity of display and matching of refractive index. Our work has contributed to improving performance of reflective LCDs by enhancing the characteristics of polymer film using stretching and optical lamination technologies. To design that offers higher contrast and wider viewing angle, we have discovered that it is necessary to control viewing angle variation of the polarizing axis in order to compensate for the viewing angle of the polarizing film as well as the optical anisotropic properties of liquid crystal. Applying this technology to circular polarizers used for reflective LCDs enables design of wide viewing angle circular polarizers. In order to realize higher contrast for reflective LCDs, it is also necessary to design other optical materials including polarizing films. For design of hybrid optical film, it is particularly necessary to reduce surface reflection and interface reflection. This paper also reports our findings concerning this topic.

  • With the increasing demands for hand-held devices with lightweight and low-power-consumption displays, the role of reflective liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is becoming more and more important. Especially, the single polarizer mode is considered as a suitable structure for reflective LCDs because it can provide high brightness. However, the single-polarizer LCDs have demerit in that the contrast is lower than double-polarizer LCDs because of the light leakage in thedark state. (omitted)

  • Reflectors for reflective LCDs must be designed to be able to control the direction of the image and the viewing angle range for optimal display. In this paper, we tried to optimize the reflector for reflective LCDs. The conventional surface structures showed many defects and problems. Therefore we made efforts to improve the surface structures of the conventional reflectors through both a theoretical approach and analytic work. As a result, we proposed surface structures which showed almost uniform reflectance within the viewing angle range specified by a user even at any oblique incidence. By using Beckmann's equations, we could check the reflective property of the proposed surface structures.

  • Quality of the reflective LCD as a display is strongly influenced by the environment where the display is evaluated. Up to now, several methods for the evaluation of the reflective LCDs have been proposed. We have developed a new method in which the optical characteristics of the reflective LCDs from the spot light and the diffuse light can be obtained at the same time. The results obtained in our experiments by using the new method showed a good agreement with those evaluated at office and outdoor environments.

  • Reflectors for reflective LCDs are required to be able to control the direction of the image and viewing angle range for optimal display. To achieve these required characteristics, we performed elementary experiments on conventional reflectors, and theoretical analyzed the reflective property of rough surfaces by using scattering theory. We also proposed a reflector structure by which we can control the direction of the image and viewing angle characteristics simultaneously. If we fabricate and apply this reflector to the reflective LCDs, we can realize high performance display.

  • We present the results of a study of the polarizing photovoltaic (PV) effects in an aligned polymer bulk heterojuction PV layer. The fairly uniform in-plane uniaxial alignment of the PV layer with a macroscopic axial orientational order parameter of 0.40 was achieved by means of a simple rubbing technique. Moreover, reflective polarizing PSCs having the aligned PV layers were applied to power-generating reflective type liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which exhibited a maximum contrast ratio of 1.7. These results form a promising foundation for various energy harvesting polarization dependent opto-electrical LCD device applications.

  • We designed and fabricated a monocolor holographic reflector for reflective LCDs with DuPont holographic photopolymer as a holographic recording media. By recording at 514 nm as holographic operating wavelength, it was possible to get the brightest image in green color. High contrast ratio is possible due to misalignment of the images with surface reflection and we achieved on/off contrast ratio of 6:1 by applying the fabricated holographic reflector to a TN-LC cell.
