  • In this work, we proposed a reflective antiferroelectric liquid crystal display (AFLCD) using a half-wave cell whose tilt angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. To check the validity of our design, we fabricated a reflective half-wave AFLC cell of which tilt angle is $24.9^{\circ}$, and measured viewing angle dependent reflectance and VIS reflection spectra. In the results, the half-wave AFLC cell in the reflective configuration exhibits high brightness, high contrast ratio of 20:1.

  • Reflectors for reflective LCDs are required to be able to control the direction of the image and viewing angle range for optimal display. To achieve these required characteristics, we performed elementary experiments on conventional reflectors, and theoretical analyzed the reflective property of rough surfaces by using scattering theory. We also proposed a reflector structure by which we can control the direction of the image and viewing angle characteristics simultaneously. If we fabricate and apply this reflector to the reflective LCDs, we can realize high performance display.

  • In this paper, a tolerance allocation method using Monte-Carlo simulation with measured reflective eccentricity for high-sensitive IR optics is proposed. During optics fabrication and alignment, reflective eccentricity was measured using an optical centration measurement instrument. A Monte-Carlo simulation was performed using measured eccentricity data, and it gives statistical estimated performance of the optics after fabrication. The validity of the proposed tolerance allocation method was verified comparing the estimated MTF result with the measured MTF result of the fabricated optics.

  • The mode (reflective and transmissive) switchable LCD has been developed by using a treated SR (Selective Reflector) polarizer. We believe that our approach will be a solution to overcome weak points for a reflective and transflective mode in a dark environment and a transmissive mode in a bright environment. Therefore, this can minimize power consumption, and also be easily fabricated in a current manufacturing process, ready for large sizes.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the teachers' belief of efficacy and their personality dispositions (reflective thinking, emotional adaptability, and motivation orientation). A survey was conducted of 282 kindergarten teachers working in the area of Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do. Data were processed and analyzed by statistical methods of descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regressions. Results showed that teachers' belief of efficacy was positively correlated with their personality dispositions of reflective thinking, emotional adaptability, and motivation orientation-approach. They were negatively correlated with motivational orientation-avoidance. Teachers' belief of efficacy was highly correlated with emotional adaptability in all variables, followed by reflective thinking and motivation orientations-avoidance.

  • In this paper, the configuration of a reflectIve bistable tWIsted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal cell is optmnzed for high contrast and high brightness operation. We searched for the optimum opncal parameters of a reflective BTN cell by calculating its optical performances at 3 wavelengths; red, green, and blue. By studying the effect of each optical parameter on the optical performances, we found that the angle of !he polmlzer IS more important than any other opnea! parmlleters iu the deSIgn of a reflective BTN cell. We fablicated a reflective BTN cell with a wide-band retardation Him, whose measmed contrast ratio is 10.6: 1. .6: 1.

  • Adopting an elaborately designed reflective objective consisting of four mirrors, we have developed a rotating-polarizer-type microspot spectroscopic ellipsometer (SE) with an ultra-small spot size. The diameter of the focused beam, whether evaluated using a direct-image method or a knife-edge method, is less than 8.4 ㎛. After proper correction for the polarizing effect of the mirrors in the reflective objective, we unambiguously determine the dispersion of the complex refractive index and the thickness of monolayer MoS2 using the measured microspot-spectroellipsometric data. The measured ellipsometric spectra are sensitive enough to identify small variations in thickness of MoS2 flakes, which ranged from 0.48 nm to 0.67 nm.

  • A virtual reality system is implemented for the operator supervising a robot's operation at a remote site. For this implementation, a two D.O.F force-reflective joystick is designed to reflect the force/torque measured at the end of robotic manipulator and to generate the motion command for the robot by the operator using this joystick. In addition, the visual information that is captured by a CCD camera, is transmitted to the remote operator and is displayed on a CRT monitor. The operator who is holding the force reflective joystick and watching the CRT monitor can resolve unexpected problems that the robot confronts with. That is, the robot performs the tasks autonomously unless it confronts with unexpected events that can be resolved by only the operator. To demonstrate the feasibility of this system, a remote peg-in-hole operation is implemented and the experimental data are shown.

  • This study aims to analyze middle school students' systemic thinking to express organic relations between different organ systems about the movement of food and air and teachers' reflective thinking about science teaching through their reflective journals after the lesson of digestion, circulation, respiration and excretion. Firstly, when investigating the moving route of hamburger eaten inside the body, students expressed the names, locations and forms of organs in the digestive system more than those in the circulatory system or the excretory system. When investigating the moving route of a painkiller taken inside the body, students seemed to have more difficulty in expressing the related organ systems than when investigating the moving route of other things, and they mostly drew pictures of organs in the digestive system as done for the moving route of hamburger. However, when investigating the moving route of water drunk inside the body, students mostly described organs in the digestive system but drew more pictures of organs in the excretory system, than when investigating the moving route of other things. When investigating the moving route of air inhaled inside the body, students mostly drew pictures of organs in the respiratory system, but the rate of their drawing pictures of circulatory organs was low. Secondly, this study analyzed one of the teachers' reflective journals, named Mr. Park. According to his journal, students showed different levels of understanding of organ names, depending on their degrees of familiarity with each organ, and in regard to the locations of organs, science teachers mostly aim to achieve learning objectives so much that they often forget to instruct the locations of organs in fact. As for the forms of organs, science teachers mostly spend so much time explaining the functions of organs that they often forget to describe the exact form of each organ.
