  • An optical fiber-based beam width measurement technique is presented. The proposed system can be applied to the optical fiber industry in applications such as lensed fiber, optical fiber based laser beam source, and fiber optic sensor. The measurement system is composed of optical fiber, which is used as a transceiver, and a single grating panel which consists of a multi-reflection area with an even non-reflection area. The grating panel is used to vary the reflected light. When the widths of the reflection area and non-reflection area are larger than the optical beam width, the reflected light is varied at the interface between the reflection area and the non-reflection area by the movement of the grating panel. Experiments were conducted in order to verify the feasibility of the proposed technique. Multi-mode fiber combined with a collimator was selected as an emitter and a receiver, and the beam width measurement system was contrived. Subsequently, the proposed method and the system were verified by comparing the experimental results with the results of the conventional charge-coupled device technique.

  • We have studied sngle-frequency yield of 1.55${\mu}$m DFB lasers with uniform sinusoidal grating using an effective index transfer matrix method considering both threshold gain difference and spatial hole-burning effect. Optimum grating height and mirror reflectivities that maximize the single-frequency yield are found for a low-reflection (LR)/high-reflection(HR) mirror structure and a LR/as-cleaved miror structure for an assumed basic waveguide structure. LR/HR structure has a high yield of about 80% in a narrow range of grating height while LR/as-cleaved mirror structure has a low yield of about 50% in a relatively wide range of grating height. The effect of the low-reflection facet reflectivity is also studied.

  • By incorporating a polarization-diversity loop configuration (PDLC), we have demonstrated inline conversion between transmission and reflection spectra of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) without reconfiguration of the fiber filter structure. The proposed apparatus consists of a polarization beam splitter, an FBG, and two quarter-wave plates (QWP's). The inline conversion operation between transmission and reflection spectra of the FBG was performed by proper adjustment of QWP's within the proposed filter. The band rejection ratio and side-mode suppression ratio in transmission and reflection modes of the fabricated filter were measured as ~17.0[dB] and ~16.4[dB], respectively.

  • A Superstructure Grating(SSG) Distributed-Bragg-Reflector(DBR) laser has a broad tuning range with a good mode suppression ratio. However, gaps of channel are observed in the wavelength-tuning characteristics of an SSGDBR laser which employs linearly-chirped DBR mirrors. We found by numerical simulation that the gaps may be attributed to the nonuniform reflection-peak heights of a linearly-chirped DBR mirrors. We propose a nonlinearly chirped grating DBR mirror structure that makes reflection-peak heights almost uniform. Therefore a nonlinearly chirped grating structure can be employed in an extended tuning range semiconductor laser to achieve gap-free tuning and low threshold current operation simultaneously.

  • In this paper, when a refractive index grating and a gain grating were simultaneously present in a DFB laser having a wavelength of 1.55 ㎛, a dielectric film coating was applied so that reflection did not occur on the right mirror surface, so that 𝜌r=0. In case of 𝛿L>0, the characteristics of the oscillation frequency and oscillation gain were analyzed. When the grating phase of the left mirror surface continues to decrease from 𝜋, the graph lines of each mode gradually shift to the left. In case of 𝜅L=10, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode is the lowest. In this case, the mode selectivity is relatively low. From 𝜅L=0.5 to 𝜅L=6, the mode selectivity and the frequency stability are excellent. In the case of DFB lasers with an anti-reflection coated mirror, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode increases but the mode selectivity is about twice as excellent, compared with DFB lasers of having two cleaved facets.

  • A widely tunable U-shaped SGDBR (Sampled Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector) laser diode is designed and analyzed by means of a time-domain simulation. The U-shaped SGDBR laser diode consists of SGDBR, active, phase, and TIR (Total Internal Reflection) mirror sections, so the coupling losses across the sections should be carefully considered. The tuning range of the designed U-shaped SGDBR laser is about 1525-1570 nm, which is confirmed by the simulation. The simulation results show that the loss in the TIR mirror region should be less than about 2 dB, and the refractive-index difference at the butt coupling between the passive and active regions should be less than 0.1, to provide the complete tuning range.

  • The electromagnetic scattering characteristics by a periodic strip grating on a grounded dielectric slab for TE polarization case is examined from the viewpoints of both the reflection grating and the leaky wave antenna problems. Numerical results for two kinds of Bragg blazing (resonance type and non-resonance type) phenomena are given and some discussions on the properties such as complex propagation constants, scattering characteristics, and distributions of strip current density are presented.

  • We investigate the efficiency of an optical intensity modulator based on an electrically tunable $LiNbO_3$ reflection grating. Assuming a grating coupling coefficient and the waveguide propagation loss, waveguide length is varied to find its effect on the modulator slope efficiency and the device capacitance. With the low propagation loss of the $LiNbO_3$ waveguide, a very efficient optical intensity modulator can be achieved for a low frequency (${\sim}1GHz$) as long as the requirement for the grating coupling coefficient is satisfied.

  • An analysis method for the electromagnetic scattering of a Tm polarized plane wave from a periodic strip grating over a grounded dielectric slab is considered from the viewpoint of reflection grating problem. The parameters of strip gratings showing Bargg and Off-Bragg blazing phenomena at the frequency of 10GHz are derived teoretically. The strip grating structure is implemented using Aluminum plate(groung conductor), paraffin(dielectric material.epsilon.$_{r}$=2.24), and copper(strip conductor0.08m thickness). The experimental results(reflection power) of Bragg as well as Off-Bragg blazing phenomenon for TM polarized plane wave have been compared with the theoretical results and fairly good agreements between theory and experiment have been observed.d.

  • We fabricated 1-D and 2-D diffraction gratings of SiOx anti-reflection (AR) film grown on a quartz substrate and integrated them into a c-Si photovoltaic (PV) submodule. The light-trapping effect of the resulting submodules was studied in terms of the oblique optical incident angle, ${\theta}_i$. As the ${\theta}_i$ increased, solar conversion efficiency, ${\eta}$, was improved as expected by the increased optical transmission caused by the grating. For ${\theta}_i{\leq}30^{\circ}$, the relative solar conversion efficiency, ${\Delta}{\eta}$, of a 1-D SiOx (t=300 nm) grating, compared to that of a flat SiOx AR-coated integrated PV submodule, was improved very little, with a small variation of within 2%, but increased markedly for ${\theta}_i{\geq}40^{\circ}$. We observed a change of ${\Delta}{\eta}$ as large as 10.7% and 9.5% for the SiOx grating of period t=800 nm and 1200 nm, respectively. For a 2-D SiOx (t=300 nm) grating integrated PV submodule, however, the optical trapping behavior was similar in terms of ${\theta}_i$ but its variation was small, within ${\pm}1.0%$.
