  • In machine tools, often a gearbox is installed to control the rotating speed of spindle, which sometimes generates problems of noise and vibration due to errors in tooth-meshing. In this study, the characteristics of, noise and vibration of given gearbox for a machine tool are analyzed experimentally. From the measurement, it was observed that the tooth-meshing component of the sound pressure level from the gearbox took its maximum at a specific operational speed. Therefore, the main content of this study is to investigate the reason why the above mentioned characteristics are observed. By investigating the natural frequencies of the components in gearbox, it was found that the natural frequencies of the rotating gear-shaft and gearbox for twisting mode were closely related to the first and second peak of sound pressure levels respectively. Thereform, in this study, those relations were identified by the impact test of rotating gear-shaft and-gearbox. In addition, we inserted the rubber between housing and bed, and analyze the effect of the rubber insertion on noise reduction by Operational Deflection Shapes.

  • This paper introduces a base isolation system-tuned mass damper inerter (BIS-TMDI) hybrid system to the AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP), which reduces seismic damage potential of the NPP structure. The effects of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) caused by the passive containment cooling system water storage tank (PCCWST) on NPP's seismic performance are investigated. The FSI of water tank theoretical model is considered based on the Housner's model, and a series of time history analyses are performed to prove the rationality of the proposed model. Three single-objective optimization strategies are employed to minimize the relative displacement variance and absolute acceleration variance of the upper structure, as well as the filtered energy index (FEI). Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization strategy considering all these three indexes is proposed to obtain optimal parameters of vibration control. The influence of vibration control strategies on the relative deformation and acceleration of the upper structure is explored with various water level ratios. The analytical results indicate that the proposed BIS-TMDI strategy has significantly reduced the NPP structure's seismic response. The effectiveness of the vibration control strategy is influenced by the water level ratio, emphasizing the significance of designing an appropriate water level ratio to reduce NPP structure's seismic response.

  • Recently, the construction wastes rapidly increase because of redevelopment, the development of new urbanization of large housing development, the expansion of social infrastructure. With increase of the construction noise, vibration, and dust caused by these developments, environmental conflicts and civil appeals increase. Moreover, the Government will reduce environmental level in the near future. Therefore, it will be expected to increase environmental conflicts and civil appels related to construction noise, vibration, and dust. To minimize environmental conflicts and civil appels, this study suggest the plan of prevention of environmental confliction and civil appeal by analyzing and measuring vibration, noise level, and dust of in-site crusher facilities at large and development district.

  • In this paper the tuned mass-damper-inerter (TMDI) is considered for passive vibration control and energy harvesting in harmonically excited structures. The TMDI couples the classical tuned mass-damper (TMD) with a grounded inerter: a two-terminal linear device resisting the relative acceleration of its terminals by a constant of proportionality termed inertance. In this manner, the TMD is endowed with additional inertia, beyond the one offered by the attached mass, without any substantial increase to the overall weight. Closed-form analytical expressions for optimal TMDI parameters, stiffness and damping, given attached mass and inertance are derived by application of Den Hartog's tuning approach to suppress the response amplitude of force and base-acceleration excited single-degree-of-freedom structures. It is analytically shown that the TMDI is more effective from a same mass/weight TMD to suppress vibrations close to the natural frequency of the uncontrolled structure, while it is more robust to detuning effects. Moreover, it is shown that the mass amplification effect of the inerter achieves significant weight reduction for a target/predefined level of vibration suppression in a performance-based oriented design approach compared to the classical TMD. Lastly, the potential of using the TMDI for energy harvesting is explored by substituting the dissipative damper with an electromagnetic motor and assuming that the inertance can vary through the use of a flywheel-based inerter device. It is analytically shown that by reducing the inertance, treated as a mass/inertia-related design parameter not considered in conventional TMD-based energy harvesters, the available power for electric generation increases for fixed attached mass/weight, electromechanical damping, and stiffness properties.

  • During handling unitized products, they are subjected to a variety of environmental hazards. Shock and vibration hazards are generally considered the most damaging of the environmental hazards on a product and it may encounter while passing through the distribution environment. A major cause of shock damage to products is drops during manual handling. The increasing use of unitization of pallets has been resulted in a reduction of the shock hazards. This has caused an increasing interest in research focused on vibration caused dam age. Damage to the product by the vibration most often occurs when a product or a product component has a natural frequency that falls within the range of the forcing frequencies of the particular mode of transportation being used. Transportation vibration is also a major cause of fruit and vegetable quality loss due to mechanical damage. This study was conducted to determine the vibration characteristics of the corrugated fiberboard bones for packages of pears, and to investigate the degree of vibration injury of the pears in the boxes during the simulated transportation environment. The vibration tests were performed on an electrohydraulic vibration exciter. The input acceleration to exciter was fixed at 0.25 G for a single container resonance test and 0.5 G for the vertical stacked container over the frequency range from 3 to 100 Hz. Function generator (HP-33120A) was connected by wire to the vibration exciter for controlling the input acceleration at a continuous logarithmic sweep rate of 1.0 octave per min. The peak frequency and acceleration on the single box test were 22.02 Hz, 1.5425 G respectively, and these values on the vertical stacked boxes were observed from the bottom box 19.02, 18.14, 16.62 and 15.40 Hz and 2.2987, 3.7654. 5.6087, and 7.9582 G, respectively. The pear in the bottom box had a slightly higher damage level than the fruit packed in the other stacked boxes. It is desirable that the package and transportation system has to be so designed that 15∼20 Hz frequency will not occur during the transportation environment.

  • The quality of various noises generated in the refrigerator is one of the important factors in deciding quality of the product. The main focus of sound control design has been shifted from reduction of sound level to improvement of sound duality for customer's preference. Up to date the purpose of noise control is the minimization of noise level. However despite of gradual decrease of noise level, occasionally the perceptional quality of noise has not been improved. In this paper, the relation between subjective and objective evaluation of sound quality has established and sound quality index is developed using ANN for evaluation of refrigerator's noise of both the starting noise and the stable running noise of compressor. To verify the usefulness of the index, the results in this paper have been compared with those surveyed by Consumer Union in USA.

  • Reduction of acoustic loads of space launch vehicles can be achieved by acoustic absorbers satisfying strict cleanness requirements. This limited the use of general porous materials and requires non-porous sound absorbers. Micro-perforated panel absorbers(MPPA) is one of promising sound absorbers satisfying the cleanness requirement for launch vehicles. However, its applicability was limited to low sound pressure levels according to the acoustic impedance model of micro-perforated panels. In this paper the applicability of micro-perforated panel absorbers at high incident sound pressure was investigated in experimental ways. The absorption characteristics of a micro-perforated panel absorber was simulated according to its design variables, e.g., minute hole diameters and aperture ratios. It was shown that optimal design can be readily done by using proposed design charts. Experiments were conducted to measure acoustic properties of the designed micro-perforated panel absorbers. The results showed that acoustic resistance increases rapidly as incident sound pressure level does but change of acoustic reactance can be neglected in a practical point of view. This caused the decrease of peak value of absorption coefficient at high incident sound pressure level, but the amount of reduction can be accepted in practice. The major advantage of the micro-perforated panel absorber(wide absorption bandwidth) was still kept at high sound pressure level.

  • Along with industrial development, various architectural structures have become bigger and higher, leading to an expansion in the size and capacity of construction equipment. And with the development of public transportation, the use of subways as a means of transportation in the city center is increasing, so that vibrations and structural noises are emerging as a new environmental issue. Considering that architectural structures may be used from several decades to hundreds of years after the time of construction, they can be seen as semi-permanent. Due to changes in the vibration-proof polyurethane mats installed in the foundation of these structures, settling may occur and vibration reduction may become inadequate. Therefore, in view of service life, it is necessary to have a high-level standard of reliability and stability. In accordance with this, the Floating Floor System, which uses soft polyurethane foam and can be constructed within a relatively short period of time, has excellent vibration resistant characteristics. It is presented as a great alternative solution to the issue of vibrations caused by subways, railways and building structures. At present, vibration-proof polyurethane mats have been developed up to the same product level as in other advanced countries. However, in the construction of structure foundations, the physical properties of this product and its shape incur changes. If they are installed as such in the structure of a building, it may cause significant impact on stability, requiring that this cause be urgently identified and improved.

  • In this study, the effects were analyzed by applying the vibration absorption liner into the guide rail bracket as a part of method to reduce the vibration and noise on the high-rise apartment. As the result of vibration absorption liner performance, it was checked that the level of vibration and noise was reduced around 65.49% in the car side and around 90.05% in the counterweight side. Therefore, the vibration absorption effect by the vibration absorption liner of elevator guide rail bracket became fairly good. In case of the vibration absorption liner application, there was an effect on the reduction of 7.26 to 22.22% at hoistway section area, 3,840,000 to 9,780000 KRW at the cost of material and installation by comparing with the damping beam application. Also, in case of the vibration absorption liner application with light weight instead of damping beam with heavy weight, it was thought to become significant effect at preventing the safety from the accidents on installation site.
