This study investigated the effects of high pressure with or without thermal treatment on the cured color development and residual nitrite contents of model meat systems (pork, NaCl and sodium nitrite). At low nitrite levels (${\leq}50{\mu}g/g$), 200 MPa of pressure alone (P) did not develop the cured meat color (p>0.05). Thermal treatment (T) showed curing pigmentation (higher CIE L* and CIE a*), and the impacts were more effective when pressure was combined with thermal treatment (PT). In contrast, nitrite levels did not contribute to the cured meat color when ${\geq}200{\mu}g/g$ of nitrite was added to the meat. At high nitrite levels, although the typical cured color that is induced by thermal treatment did not present by pressure alone, the PT treatment still showed a pinker color with low residual nitrite content compared to the T treatment. The higher the pressure level (300 MPa), the greater the cured meat pigmentation with lower residual nitrite. Therefore, the present study demonstrates the possible application of high pressure, both for cured pigmentation and reducing residual nitrite, respective to typical thermal treatments.
The peels of Carya cathayensis Sarg. (PCCS) were treated under subcritical water conditions ($130^{\circ}C$ to $280^{\circ}C$ for 0 to 120 min). The extract from PCCS included reducing sugar, proteins, and compounds with radical scavenging activity. Addressing the reducing sugar that is a resource of bioethanol, we could maximize the reducing sugar under the subcritical water ($190^{\circ}C$ for 60 min) and obtain 0.24 g/g-sample together with 9.7 units/mg-sample of radical scavenging activity. The obtained extract was estimated to correspond to 1 L of bioethanol/100 g-sample. It was therefore considered that the treatment by subcritical water could yield reducing sugar and natural compounds with radical scavenging activity.
One of the indigeneous plants to this country, Syringa dilatata $N_{AKAI}$ (Oleaceae) is known in commerce as 'Ya-Jung-Hyang' (野丁香) and has been known to be of effect as bitter stomachics. Seasonal variations in the content of polyalcohols and free reducing sugars in leaves of this plant which contains syringin glycoside, mannitol and free reducing sugars etc. were studied. Application of chromotropic acid to formaldehyde which was obtained from polyalcohols and reducing sugars by treatment with periodic acid results in reddish violet coloration and the solution has absorption maximum at wave length $570m\;{\mu}$. By the use of ionic exchange resin chromatography, poyalcohols were separated from the above mixture. The content of polyalcohols of this plant was plentiful in the growing season while that of free reducing sugars was decreasing vice versa.

A large diameter roundwood is an important element of Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, and is hard to be dried without surface cracks. Four different pretreatments, such as pre-cracking, oil heating, kerfing-oil heating and PEG impregnation, were investigated for reducing the surface cracks of large-diameter roundwood specimens during heat treatment. The roundwood specimens of pre-cracking, oil heating and kerfing-oil heating showed surface cracks during pretreatment, but that of PEG impregnation did not. It was confirmed that kerfing reduced the total crack width. Among the four pretreatments and control only the PEG impregnation roundwood specimen had no crack on both outer and inner surfaces after heat treatment. The PEG impregnation specimen shrank only 1.6% in the tangential direction while the pre-cracking did 8.0%.
Protein-bound polysaccharide is derived from Acanthopananx senticosus by the cold water extraction. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of PS against weight loss and hematological change as a indication of toxicity produced by the treatment of cisplatin. PS protected the weight loss caused by cisplatin (6 mg/kg) and significantly recovered hematological change. Treatment of PS showed the recovery on the weight loss and hematological change as indicators of toxicity of cisplatin treatment. By increasing lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, PS may be highly effective in protecting against cisplatin-induced toxicity. The results suggest PS might have a role in reducing toxicity or permitting larger dose of cisplatin to be given.

To compare the extent of heat treatment in domestic infant formula, pH,titratable acidity, undenatured whey protein contents, HMF contents and protein-reducing substances of three commercial products (A, B, C) were measured. The pH of B products was lowest and the titratable acidity of B product was highest. The contents of undenatured whey protein per 100ml serum were 0∼30mg(A products), 90∼130mg(B products)and 80∼90mg(C products), respectively. Distinct differences of undenatured whey protein contents according to the manufacturer and infat's stage in age could be observed. The HMF contents of tested products showed 10.9∼21.5umol/L and B-2 product(B products for the second stage of 5∼9 month) was the highest among tested products. The protein-reducing substances showed 4.46∼9.50mg K4Fe(CN)6/100ml serum nd B-2 product was the highest among tested products.
Objective: The aim of this study was to report the effects of herbal medicine Jayeumganghwa-tang on reducing the major side effects of doxorubicin and carboplatin in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Methods: The clinical outcomes for a 61-year-old patient treated with Jayeumganghwa-tang for the side effects of doxorubicin and carboplatin combination were recorded by self-evaluation. Results: In the treatment of adverse events caused by chemotherapy, the administration of Jayeumganghwa-tang showed a tendency to reduce their incidence and severity. Conclusions: This study suggests that Jayeumganghwa-tang may be a promising treatment for reducing the side effects of chemotherapy in patients with ovarian cancer.

Improper management and unsanitary approaches are implemented in disposal of leachate, which has resulted in groundwater pollution at village Uruli Devachi, Pune, India. Various physico-chemical treatment methods are commercially available for leachate treatment. However, the application of biological methods viz. phytoremediation to the municipal solid waste landfill leachate has been limited. We report the remediation ability of Typha aungstifolia and Acrorus calamus that is capable of reducing hazardous constituents from the landfill leachate. After 96 h of hydraulic retention time (HRT), it was observed that T. aungstifolia-treated sample showed high reduction potential in reducing biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, hardness, total dissolved solids, Na, Mg, Ca and Ni whereas A. calamus showed greater reduction capacity for alkalinity, Cl, Cu, Zn and Cr. Furthermore, it was also observed that T. aungstifolia withstood longer HRT than A. calamus. In situ application of T. aungstifolia and A. calamus for remediation of landfill leachate carries a tremendous potential that needs to be further explored.

The effect of far-infrared (FIR) irradiation and heat treatment on the antioxidant activity of extracts from citrus pomaces (CP) was evaluated. CP were placed in pyrex petri dishes (8.0 cm diameter) and irradiated at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$ for 5, 10, 15, 20, 40 or 60 min with a FIR heater or simple heater, respectively. After FIR irradiation or simple heat treatment, 70% ethanol extracts (EE) and water extracts (WE) of CP were prepared and radical scavenging activity (RSA) and reducing power of the extracts were determined. The antioxidant activities of the extracts increased as the time of heating or FIR-irradiation increased. When CP were FIR-irradiated at $100^{\circ}C$ far 30min, the values of RSA and reducing power of EE increased from 14.9% to 44.2%, and 0.290 to 0.886, respectively, compared to the untreated control. Simple heat treatment of CP at $100^{\circ}C$ for 60 min also increased RSA and reducing power of EE to 44.7%, and 1.045, respectively. FIR irradiation and heat treatment increased RSA and reducing power of WE from CP, too. These results indicated the antioxidant activity of CP extracts was significantly affected by FIR irradiation and heating temperature and duration on CP, and that the FIR irradiation and heat treatment process can be used as a tool for increasing the antioxidant activity of CP.

To improve usability of super sweet corn, extracts were prepared with hydrolytic enzyme and changes in physicochemical and antioxidant properties were analyzed. Soluble solids and reducing sugars contents were higher in all enzyme treatment groups than in the control. When enzyme treatment time increased, contents of soluble solids and reducing sugars were also increased. There was no significant difference in lightness between treatment groups, with redness showing the highest value in the control and yellowness showing the highest value in the invertase treatment group. Free sugar content in the control was the lowest. However free sugar content in the enzyme combination treatment group was increased by more than four times compared to that in the control. Contents of ascorbic acid, flavonoids and polyphenols were higher in the enzyme treatment group than in the control. In particular, the enzyme combination treatment group showed the highest content. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging abilities were significantly higher in all enzyme treatment groups than in the control. Radical scavenging abilities of cellulase treatment group and enzyme combination treatment group showed high activity. The activity increased when enzyme treatment time increased. The combined enzyme treatment method for super sweet corn was suitable for food processing.
