Characteristics for Effects of Co2 Addition to Oxygen-Enriched Combustion (산소부화연소에서 Co2 첨가에 대한 연소 특성)

  • $CO_2$ is a well-known green house gas as well as the major source of global warming. Many researchers have studied to reduce $CO_2$ emission in combustion processes. Among the method for reducing $CO_2$ emission, oxygen-enriched combustion has been proposed. Because its adiabatic flame temperature is relatively too high, existing facilities must be changed or the flame temperature in the combustion zone should be reduced. The combustion characteristics, composition in the flame zone, temperature profile and emission gases were investigated experimentally for the various oxygen-enriched ratios(OER) by the addition of $CO_2$, under constant $O_2$ flow rate. Results showed that the reaction zone was quenched and broadened as the addition of $CO_2$ was increased. The emission of NOx in flue gas was decreased as decreasing temperature in reaction zone. It was also shown that the reaction was delayed by the cooling effect. As the addition of $CO_2$ was increased, the composition of CO in the flame zone was increased due to the increase of reaction rate by increasing mixing effect of oxidant/fuel at OER=0%, but the composition of CO was decreased by quenching effect at OER=50% and 100%.

  • In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, in order to improve clean room air quality, air washers are used to remove airborne gaseous contaminants such as $NH_3$, SOx and organic gases from the outdoor air introduced into clean room. Meanwhile, there is a large amount of exhaust air from a clean room. From an energy conservation point of view, heat recovery is therefore useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a clean room. Therefore it is desirable to recover heat from the exhaust air and use it to reheat the outdoor air. In the present study, numerical analysis and experiment was conducted to simulate the amount of energy reduction of exhaust air heat recovery type air washer system. The present numerical results showed good agreement with the results of the experimental data.

  • There is a great demand for reducing the amount of material used in mass-produced plastics parts for material cost constitutes a large percentage of the total cost of a product up to 75% It may be noted that the price of plastics is directly related to the price of petroleum. Material reduction therefore decreases the amount of oil needed for the manufacture of plastics and thus help conserve this natural resource. Therefore microcellular foaming process(MCPs) was studied for solving this problems alternatively in 1980's at M. I. T. Until now in microcellular plastics processes carbon dioxide gas was mainly used for microcellular foaming Because carbon dioxide has more solubility than any other gases such as nitrogen gas or helium gas. The purpose of the this research is measurement of changing of the microcellular plastics' weight by using nitrogen gas in injection molding an comparing weight reduction of microcellular foamed plastics for using carbon dioxide gas with nitrogen gas.

  • As the Kyoto Protocol, which aims at reducing greenhouse gases in accordance to the UNFCCC, came into force, research on environment friendly energy resources has been a matter of concern worldwide. As a general power generation system, among renewable energy resources, that is interconnected and operated with power system, the wind turbine is emerging as an effective alternative. Since power capacity of the wind turbine has been steadily increasing and its relative importance is also increasing in total facility capacity, we cannot ignore its effect. Because controlling generation output in the wind turbine is not as easy as in the synchronous machine due to its facility characteristics and it generates irregular output fluctuations when interconnected with power system, system interconnection was difficult. But the effect of large capacity wind turbine on isolated power system like Jeju island is serious problem on the frequency stability. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the effects of wind turbine on system interconnection and assess the optimum capacity of wind turbine that satisfies the most important principle of stable power supply. This paper have analyzed the effects of wind turbine capacity increases on the system and suggested the method of the capacity to achieve its steady operation. And It is applied to the Jeju island.

Influence of Diet on Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Cattle Manure

  • Livestock is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gases (GHGs). It accounts for 14.5% of the global GHGs emissions like methane ($CH_4$) from enteric fermentation and manure, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) from manure and fertilizer. Since enteric emissions are a major contributor of $CH_4$ than that of manure emissions hence primary efforts were made on reducing enteric emissions, with minor attention to dung emissions. Many researches were conducted by dietary manipulation to mitigate enteric $CH_4$ emission. However dietary manipulation also had significant effects on manure GHGs emissions too. Several works proved that manure $CH_4$ emissions were increased with high level of concentrate supplementation despite reduction in enteric $CH_4$. Fat and CP content of the diet has shown inconsistent results on manure $CH_4$ emissions. Amount of concentrate in the diet has shown little effect whereas dietary CP content exhibited conflicting effects on manure $N_2O$ emissions.

  • Recently, biomass application for energy is getting more interests from many countries since biomass is widely available over the nation wide, whereas fossil fuels are produced in several limited regions. Recognizing the importance, government is promoting renewable energy use in Korea. The locational characteristics of the existing biomass potential directly can be used to decide scale of power plant for local agricultural facility. Although there are a few studies on feasible biomass potential in local areas, it is expected that both government and commercial sectors recognize the potential of biomass energy and the importance of reducing greenhouse gases. When planning biomass energy systems, biomass price is determined by the costs of collection, transportation, chipping, drying if required. In this paper investigates the economic and spatial characteristic of biomass location by land use map. However typical area of each categories in local region is not correct to agricultural census data. Therefore we concerned about how to calculate feasible biomass potential which it can be describing total amount of plant scale, and to match both of data. Even though its spatial distribution, in rural area in Korea, to expand biomass energy programs in the area, government serve to find areas of higher biomass production with suitable locations for plants to convert to bio-energy in order to increase the usage of renewable energy.

  • A simulation program using the mass transfer correlation was constructed to analyze 1-D simplified condensing flow across the tube bank. Higher efficiency was anticipated by reducing the flue gas temperature down below the dew point where the water vapor in the flue gas is condensed at the surface of the heat exchanger; that is, the heat transfer by the latent heat is added to that by the sensible heat. Thus, there can be an optimum operating condition to maximize the heat recovery from the flue gas. The temperature rises of the flue gas and the cooling water between the inlet and the outlet of the tube bank were compared with the experimental data reported previously. The predicted results agree well with the experimental data. Using this simulation program, the parametric studies have been conducted fur various operating conditions, such as the velocities and temperatures of the vapor/gas mixture and the cooling water, the number of the rows, and the conductivity of the wall material.

  • Suddenly increasing numbers of automobiles result in making worse air pollution problems. In particular, the emissions from automobiles affect badly on atmosphere. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modem technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. The ceramic filter is very efficient in reducing particular materials up to 80-90% and is evaluated as a very efficient after-treatment technology. However, it comes with decreased engine performance due to increased back-pressure occurred by thermal crack. In order to solve these problems, several methods are proposed such as fuel additive, electric heater and burner types. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a ceramic filter on a displacement 11,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on the basic mechanism and characteristics on harmful materials generated by ceramic filter.

  • Diesel vehicle is growing in importance in light-duty sector as a way of reducing greenhouse gases due to improved fuel economy. Carbon monoxide, gas-phase hydrocarbon and organic fraction of diesel particulates can be oxidized to harmless products using a diesel warm-up catalyst (WCC). This study investigated the effect of a turbocharger and a baffle on flow fields and temperature distributions in the WCC for Diesel vehicles by a numerical analysis. In the case of the WCC with the turbocharger, velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC have the relatively homogeneous distributions by the swirl generated from the turbocharger. Velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC with the turbocharger and the baffle have the improved distributions in homogeneity compared with the case of the WCC without the baffle. The homogeneous flow field and the temperature distribution in the WCC may contribute to improve the conversion performance of the catalysts.
