  • Cathodoluminescence(CL) properties of ZnO:Zn green phosphor were investigated. ZnO:Zn phosphor was synthesized by varying reducing agents and firing temperatures. ZnS, charcoal and 5% H2 gas mixed with 95% N2 gas(5H2-95N2) were used as the reducing agent and atmosphere. The highest CL intensity of ZnO:Zn phosphor was observed under the condition of 5H2-95N2 atmosphere and firing temperature of 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Charocal and ZnO as reducing agents in the syntehsis of ZnO:Zn phosphor exhibited about 60% and 40%, respectively, of the CL intensity obtained with 5H2-95N2 atmosphere.

  • Influence of cooling atmosphere on the whiteness in white portland cement was studied. The effective composition of gaseous medium of cooling atmosphere is desirable less than 0.5% of $O_2$ and 0.5~1.5% of CO. When theclinker is quenched in nitrogen atmosphere, the color of clinker becomes bright pink. In a weakly reducing gaseous medium or vacuum, the absence of oxygen brings defects in crystal and transformation in the coordination of iron, and as a result, whiteness is raised.

  • Oxide phosphorescent phosphor has an wide application in ceramic art and decoration due to its chemical and mechanical properties. Here, phosphorescent properties of strontium aluminate phosphor ($SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$) emitting yellowish-green light was investigated with thermal treatment at $1250^{\circ}C$ under air and reducing atmosphere. The characterizations of thermally treated samples were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), fluorescence spectrometer. $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ still showed a good phosphorescent properties after annealing process in reducing atmosphere, while phosphorescence of $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ annealed in air seriously degraded, due to oxidation of $Eu^{2+}$ to $Eu^{3+}$ ions. It was also observed that $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ annealed in reducing atmosphere emitted yellowish-green light during 3 h after being exposed to sunlight.

  • Nano-sized ZnSe particles are successfully synthesized in an aqueous solution at room temperature using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and thioglycolic acid (TGA) as the reducing agent and stabilizer, respectively. The effects of the mass ratio of the reducing agent to Se, stabilizer concentration, and stirring time on the synthesis of the ZnSe nanoparticles are evaluated. The light absorption/emission properties of the synthesized nanoparticles are characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and particle size analyzer (PSA) techniques. At least one mass ratio (NaBH4/Se) of the reducing agent should be added to produce ZnSe nanoparticles finer than 10 nm and to absorb UV-vis light shorter than the ZnSe bulk absorption wavelength of 460 nm. As the ratio of the reducing agent increases, the absorption wavelengths in the UV-vis curves are blue-shifted. Stirring in the atmosphere acts as a deterrent to the reduction reaction and formation of nanoparticles, but if not stirred in the atmosphere, the result is on par with synthesis in a nitrogen atmosphere. The stabilizer, TGA, has an impact on the Zn precursor synthesis. The fabricated nanoparticles exhibit excellent photo-absorption/discharge characteristics, suggesting that ZnSe nanoparticles can be alloyed without the need for organic solutions or high-temperature environments.

  • Effects of calcination process and ZrO2 addition on the electrical properties of [(Ba0.82Sr0.08Ca0.1)O]m(Ti1-$\chi$Zr$\chi$)O2 ceramics have been investigated. With the variation of A/B-site ratio m of the dielectric formulations, sintering behavior and the resistivity after sintering in a reducing atmosphere have been affected by the calcination process. When the dielectric formulations of m=1.01 were sintered in a reducing atmosphere, the room-temperature resitivity of 109 {{{{ OMEGA }}.cm was obtained for samples processed with two-step calcination, which was much lower than 1012 {{{{ OMEGA }}.cm of samples calcined once. It was confirmed that high resistivity of Ca-doped BaTiO3 ceramics, after sintering in a reducing atmosphere, is maintained by acceptor-like behavior of CaTi" which is formed by Ca substitution to Ti-site. It was also found out that the critical amount of B-site Ca substitution for reduction inhibition of BaTiO3 is around 0.005 mol. With the increasing amount of ZrO2 addition to dielectric formulations, Curie peak was depressed and Curie temperature was lowered due to the enhanced diffuse phase transition.tion.

  • The (Sr$_1$-\ulcorner.Ca\ulcorner)TiO$_3$(0.05 x 0.2) ceramics were fabricated to form semiconducting ceramics by sintering at about 1350[$^{\circ}C$] in a reducing atmosphere($N_2$gas). After being fired in a reducing atmosphere, metal oxides(CuO) was painted on the both surface of the specimens to diffuse to the grain boundary. The capacitance changes slowly and almost linearly in the temperature region of -40~+85[$^{\circ}C$]. The capacitance characteristics appears a stable value within $\pm$10[%]. According to increase of the frequency as a functional of temperature, all specimens used in this study showed the dielectric relaxation, and the relaxation frequency was above 10\ulcorner[Hz]. The capacitance is almost unchanged below about 20[V] but it decrease slowly over 20[V]. The voltage-current characteristics of specimens observed in the temperature range of 25~125[$^{\circ}C$] as the current increased appears that it is due to space charge condensed to interface between grain and grain boundary.

  • Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) are essential passive components in the electronics industry, known for their high capacitance due to the multilayer structure comprising inner electrodes and dielectric layers. Nickel electrodes are commonly used in MLCCs as the inner electrodes, and to prevent oxidation during the co-firing of the dielectric layers with nickel electrodes, reducing atmosphere is required. However, reducing atmosphere sintering can also induce a reduction of the dielectric, necessitating precise control of oxygen partial pressure. To explore the possibility of using oxide electrodes that do not require reducing atmosphere sintering, we analyze the electrical properties of nickel oxide (NiO) as a potential candidate. As a preliminary study on its use as an alternative inner electrode, the correlation between microstructure and electrical properties of bulk NiO under different sintering conditions was investigated to gain insights into the conduction mechanisms of the material.

  • NiO-doped hibonite pigments were synthesized by the solid state method to get stabilized blue color pigment in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. Optimum substitution condition with NiO for hibonite blue pigment was investigated. Experimental results were comparable to those of previous cobalt-minimization studies performed with other phosphate- or oxide-based cobalt-containing ceramic pigments (having olivine ($Co_2SiO_4$), spinel ($CoAl_2O_4$), or with co-doped willemite ($(Co,Zn)_2SiO_4$) structures). Composition was designed varying the NiO molar ratio increasing with $SnO_2$. The optimum substitution content is 0.93 mole NiO with 0.75mole $SnO_2$. The characteristics of the synthesized pigment were analyzed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and UV-vis. Synthesized pigment was applied to a lime-barium glaze with 10 wt% each and fired at an oxidation atmosphere of $1250^{\circ}C/1h$ and a reducing atmosphere $1240^{\circ}C/1h$. Blue color was obtained with $L^*a^*b^*$ values at 43.39, -6.78, -18.20 under a reducing atmosphere and 41.66, -6.36, -14.7 under and oxidation atmosphere, respectively.

  • To study the effects of chemical composition on the fusion temperatures of coal ashes, the chemical composition, mineral matter, and fusion temperature were studied with 54 kinds of coal ash samples including Korean anthracite coals. CaO, MgO and $Fe_2O_3$ were observed to be major fluxing elements in reducing and oxidizing atmosphere. The fluxing effect of $Fe_2O_3$ was increased more in reducing atmosphere. In a base/acid ratio, the fusion temperature decreased with increasing amounts of basic components. Nevertheless, the correlation between a fusion temperature and base/acid ratio was not shown well in a higher ratio of $Fe_2O_3/CaO$. The differences of fusion temperatures between oxidizing and reducing atmosphere showed close relationship with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio rather than with $Fe_2O_3$ contents. Multiple regression was used to predict the fusion temperature of coal ashes, and it was established that the major predictors in oxidizing atmosphere were Base/Acid, $Fe_2O_3/CaO$, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$, and $(SiO_2/A1_2O_3){\cdot}(Base/Acid)$ and Base/Acid, $Fe_2O_3/CaO$, $SiO_2$, and $TiO_2$ were major ones in reducing atmosphere.

  • If the properties of artificial lightweight aggregates produced by rotary kiln can be predicted by using a simulator equipped with a small electric furnace and a specially designed device for specimen movement, large amount of raw materials and plenty of test time can be saved to produce test products of lightweight aggregates. In this study a simulator for the accurate prediction of the artificial lightweight aggregates produced by rotary kiln was assembled by our own design and the properties of lightweight aggregates produced by both the simulator and rotary kiln were compared to speculate its usefulness. The average diameter of aggregates was 8 mm and atmosphere in the furnace was controlled by the amount of carbon powders. Specific gravity, absorption rate (%), black-core area in the cross-sectional view of both aggregates were measured and compared. Unlike oxydizing atmosphere, both specific gravity and absorption rate of the aggregates sintered at reducing atmosphere were increased with increasing carbon addition. It is concluded that the sintering atmosphere was the closest to that of the rotary kiln when the carbon addition was 0.7 g to make a reducing atmosphere in the furnace and the properties of both agreggates was also similar to each other.
