  • We have studied about spatial wavefront analysis of a pulsed laser output beam by means of an imaging unstable ring resonator with an infinite Fresnel number. We have constructed a Newtonian telescope type NBUR (Negative Branch Unstable Ring) Nd:YAG laser with 4 plane mirrors. Provided that the NBUR resonator is under self imaging condition, the resonator could be reduced diffraction effects which were occuring to the beam transmitting through the circular aperture of scraper mirror in the resonator. We have observed enhancement in the spatial coherence of wavefronts of laser beam due to the iterative round trips of the self imaging beam inside the ring resonator. The information on the spatial wavefronts was determined by the fringe patterns from Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the fringe analysis by means of the Fourier transform method showed the distortion of wavefronts of less than 0.2), In comparison with a standing wave type resonator, we have confirmed that the spatial coherence of the NBUR Nd:YAG laser output beam was enhanced as much as 75%. s 75%.

  • A ring resonator based band-pass filter enabling enhanced sideband suppression was proposed and demonstrated. It is composed of a single-ring based band-pass section combined with a band-rejection section based on two different coupled rings. The sideband region of the transfer characteristics of the first band-pass filter section was selectively suppressed by means of the band-rejection section without causing any excessive insertion loss. As a result, the overall transfer characteristics of the proposed filter was unproved so that its sideband suppression was elevated to allow for sharper roll-off and narrower bandwidth. In this work, a conventional single-ring band-pass filter and a proposed filter including the band-rejection section were designed and fabricated. As for the achieved device performance, with the center frequency at about 4 GHz, the sideband suppression ratio was increased as much as 8 dB and the 3-dB bandwidth was reduced from 98 MHz to 48 MHz by about 51% with no remarkable excessive insertion loss as expected. And the quality factor of the device was increased by about 105%.

  • Antimalarial drugs play an important role in the control and treatment of malaria, a deadly disease caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium spp. The development of novel antimalarial agents effective against drug-resistant malarial parasites is urgently needed. The novel derivatives, SKM13-MeO and SKM13-F, were designed based on an SKM13 template by replacing the phenyl group with electron-donating (-OMe) or electron-withdrawing groups (-F), respectively, to reverse the electron density. A colorimetric assay was used to quantify cytotoxicity, and in vitro inhibition assays were performed on 3 different blood stages (ring, trophozoite, and schizonts) of P. falciparum 3D7 and the ring/mixed stage of D6 strain after synchronization. The in vitro cytotoxicity analysis showed that 2 new SKM13 derivatives reduced the cytotoxicity of the SKM13 template. SKM13 maintained the IC50 at the ring and trophozoite stages but not at the schizont stage. The IC50 values for both the trophozoite stage of P. falciparum 3D7 and ring/mixed stages of D6 demonstrated that 2 SKM13 derivatives had decreased antimalarial efficacy, particularly for the SKM13-F derivative. SKM13 may be comparably effective in ring and trophozoite, and electron-donating groups (-OMe) may be better maintain the antimalarial activity than electron-withdrawing groups (-F) in SKM13 modification.

  • We investigate modules M having the injective property relative to nonsingular modules. Such modules are called "$\mathcal{N}$-injective modules". It is shown that M is an $\mathcal{N}$-injective R-module if and only if the annihilator of $Z_2(R_R)$ in M is equal to the annihilator of $Z_2(R_R)$ in E(M). Every $\mathcal{N}$-injective R-module is injective precisely when R is a right nonsingular ring. We prove that the endomorphism ring of an $\mathcal{N}$-injective module has a von Neumann regular factor ring. Every (finitely generated, cyclic, free) R-module is $\mathcal{N}$-injective, if and only if $R^{(\mathbb{N})}$ is $\mathcal{N}$-injective, if and only if R is right t-semisimple. The $\mathcal{N}$-injective property is characterized for right extending rings, semilocal rings and rings of finite reduced rank. Using the $\mathcal{N}$-injective property, we determine the rings whose all nonsingular cyclic modules are injective.

  • A compact dual-band half-ring-shaped (HRS) bent slot antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide for wireless local area network (WLAN) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications is presented. The antenna consists of two HRS slots with different lengths and widths. The two HRS slots are connected through an arc-shaped slit, and the upper HRS slot is bent in order to reduce the size of the antenna. The optimized dual-band HRS bent slot antenna operating in the 2.45 GHz WLAN and 3.5 GHz WiMAX bands is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with dimensions of 30 mm by 30 mm. The slot length of the proposed dual-band slot antenna is reduced by 35%, compared to a conventional dual-band rectangular slot antenna. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna operates in the frequency bands of 2.40-2.49 GHz and 3.39-3.72 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio of less than 2, and measured gain is larger than 1.4 dBi in the two bands.

  • This study presents a practical application of topology optimization (TO) technique to seek the best form of perforated steel plate shear walls (PSPSW) in simple frames. For the numerical investigation, a finite element model is proposed based on the recent particular form of PSPSW that is called the ring-shaped steel plate shear wall. The TO is applied based on the sensitivity analysis to maximize the reaction forces as the objective function considering the fracture tendency. For this purpose, TO is conducted under a monotonic and cyclic loading considering the nonlinear behavior (material and geometry) and buckling. Also, the effect of plate thickness is studied on the TO results. The final material volume of the optimized plate is limited to the material volume of the ring-shaped plate. Finally, an optimized plate is introduced and its nonlinear behavior is investigated under a cyclic and monotonic loading. For a more comprehensive view, the results are compared to the ring-shaped and four usual forms of SPSWs. The material volume of the plate for all the models is the same. The results indicate the strength, load-carrying, and energy dissipation in the optimized plate are increased while the fracture tendency is reduced without changing the material volume.

  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the microstrip square open loop dual split ring resonator is presented for reducing the phase noise. The square-shaped dual split ring resonator having the form of the microstrip square open loop is investigated to reduce the phase noise. Compared with the microstrip square open loop resonator and the microstrip square open loop split ring resonator as well as the conventional microstrip line resonator, the microstrip square dual split ring resonator has the larger coupling coefficient value, which makes a higher Q value, and has reduced the phase noise of VCO. The VCO with 1.7V power supply has the phase noise of -123.2~-122.0 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, 11.74~11.75 GHz. The figure of merit (FOM) of this VCO is-214.8~-221.7 dBc/Hz dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the same tuning range. Compared with VCO using the conventional microstrip line resonator, VCO using microstrip square open loop resonator, the phase noise of VCO using the proposed resonator has been improved in 26 dB, 10 dB, respectively.

  • Let N be a right near-ring. N is said to be strongly reduced if, for $a\inN$, $a^2 \in N_{c}$ implies $a\;\in\;N_{c}$, or equivalently, for $a\inN$ and any positive integer n, $a^{n} \in N_{c}$ implies $a\;\in\;N_{c}$, where $N_{c}$ denotes the constant part of N. We will show that strong reducedness is equivalent to condition (ⅱ) of Reddy and Murty's property $(^{\ast})$ (cf. [Reddy & Murty: On strongly regular near-rings. Proc. Edinburgh Math. Soc. (2) 27 (1984), no. 1, 61-64]), and that condition (ⅰ) of Reddy and Murty's property $(^{\ast})$ follows from strong reducedness. Also, we will investigate some characterizations of strongly reduced near-rings and their properties. Using strong reducedness, we characterize left strongly regular near-rings and ($P_{0}$)-near-rings.

  • This study presents a new, simple method for improving the front-to-back (F/B) ratio of a microstrip patch antenna. The back radiation of the microstrip patch antenna is reduced by removing some metallic parts around the ground plane and placing a new soft-surface configuration, consisting of an array of stand-up split-ring resonators on a bare dielectric substrate near the two ground plane edges. Compared to the F/B ratio of a conventional microstrip patch antenna with a full ground plane of the same size, our proposed microstrip patch antenna experimentally achieves an improved F/B ratio of 9.6 dB.
