  • In general, printing inks are mainly composed of pigments and vehicles. Its characteristics are affected, to a greater or lesser extent, by the size and distribution of the pigment particles in the dispersion. Color strength, transparency and gloss generally increases with an decrease in particle size of pigments. On the contrary, opacity, lightfastness tend to increases with an increase in particle size of pigments In this work, we have investigated an effect of surface area of pigments on the physical properties of printing of printing ink which made up vehicles for sheet fed and organic pigment Lake Red C(C.I.Pigment Red 53:1) that different surface area and particle size. It was found that gloss, tack and yield value increases with an increase in surface are of pigments, but grindness is reduced.

A Trend in Research and Development of Natural Gardenia Pigments (천연 치자 색소의 연구개발 동향)

  • Natural pigments have many applications like colouring agent, pigments, food additives, and antiseptics. At present, instead of synthetic pigments that have contributed to the development of industry, many kinds of natural pigments have been developed. The constituents of gardenia fruits, Gardenia jasminoides ELLIS, are traditionally known as herb medicine and natural dyes/pigments due to the customer is needs. The fruits produce yellow carotenoid pigments and iridoid compounds. The two main components in the yellow pigments are called crocin and crocetin. The extraction mode of yellow pigment from Gardenia is depended upon the extraction time, temperature, and volume of solvent. Red pigments or blue pigments formed from geniposide and amino acids have been reported a lot. Geniposide, the principal iridoid glucoside contained in gardenia fruit, was hydrolyzed to genipinic acid or genipin as a precursor for the pigment by enzymatic or chemical reaction. These red or blue pigments prepared with materials hydrolyzed of geniposide and amino acid and had properties governed by the electrostatic character of the amino acid. The pigments showed good stability to heat and pH but were gradually bleached by light while the other natural pigments are unstable in light, heat, acid, and base solution. The safety of the pigments was considered to be of little virulences in comparison to synthetic pigments.

  • The characteristics of anthocyanin pigments extracted from cherry(Prunus serrulata L. var. spontanea Max. Wils.) were investigated at the various conditions, such as light, temperature, organic acid, metal ion and pH. The pigments were fairly stable under the sunlight during the 20 days storage period at room temperature. The pigments covered with the Al-foil, as well as red, blue, green and yellow films, were very stable at pH 2.5. The high thermal stability (over the 64% at $115^{\circ}C$, 30 min) of the pigments in the dark at pH 2.5 was also found. In the presence of organic acid, the hyperchromic effect of red color was greatly increased in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$. Addition of metal ion, such as $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mn^{2+}$, was contributed on the stability in color at pH 2.5 throughout 20 days storage period in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$. However, $Cu^{2+}\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ caused the rapidly degradation of pigments, and $Al^{3+}$ converted red color to blueish violet. The hyperchromic effect of the red color increased, as pH decreased. Therefore, these results indicated that cherry anthocyanin pigments might be used as the potential sources of natural red colorant for foods.

Production of Red Pigments by Monascus purpureus in Submerged Culture

  • For the purpose of mass producing Monascus red pigments optimum medium composition and environmental conditions were investigated in submerged flask cultures. The optimum carbon and nitrogen sources were determined to be 30g/L of glucose and 1.5 g/L of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Of the three metals examined, Fe$\^$2+/ showed the strongest stimulatory effect on pigment production and some stimulatory effect was also found in Mn$\^$2+/. Optimum pH and agitation speed were determined to be 6.5 and 700 rpm, respectively. Under the optimum culture conditions batch fermentation showed that the maximum biomass yield and specific productivity of red pigments were 0.20 g DCW/g glucose and, 32.5 OD$\sub$500/g DCW$\^$-1/h$\^$-1/, respectively.

Consideration of Making Techniques for Red Painted Roof Tiles from Presumed Site of Daetongsa in Gongju Using Nondestructive Analysis (비파괴 분석을 활용한 공주 대통사 추정지 출토 주칠흔 기와의 제작기술 검토)

  • The Daetongsa temple is the earliest temple to be constructed during the era of the Three Kingdoms in ancient Korea. The main architect, purpose, and name of the temple have been confirmed through ancient literature and archeological materials carved in the Chinese letter, Daetong, excavated around Gongju. However, the location and range of the temple have remained elusive and were discussed in various studies. In this study, we examine the roof tiles obtained from the presumed site of the Daetongsa temple. The tiles were found to contain traces of red paint (red pigments) on their surface and analyzed using nondestructive techniques. The results imply that roof tiles were made using clay tablets and wooden cylinders, with latticed cloth in between. Additionally, some wooden cylinders appeared to comprise numerous wooden plates tied together by strings. The clay tablets used to make the roof tiles were produced from the source clay via the sorting process. The traces of red paint on the surface of the roof tiles were verified to be traditional pigments used for painting wooden buildings. These pigments were extracted from red ocher or red clay (Seokganju), mainly consisting of iron oxide. In the literature, the location of provenance sites for Seokganju is estimated to be far from Gongju. However, the materials for extracting the red pigments were relatively easy to source because most rocks comprised iron oxides. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the provenance of the red pigments around the presumed site of Daetongsa.

Diagnosis of Coloration Status and Scientific Analysis for Pigments to Used Large Buddhist Painting(Gwaebultaeng) in Tongdosa Temple (통도사 괘불탱의 채색상태 및 사용 안료의 과학적 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal that coloring status and the degree of damage and the kinds of pigments used in large buddhist painting (Gwaebultaeng) of Tongdosa temple using a scientific analysis methods. It was observed that the physical damage patterns of the Gwaebultaeng were folding, lifting, fading, and peeling. Lead red, cinnabar and organic pigments were used as red pigments. Malachite and atacamite were used as green pigments, azulite and lazulite were blue pigments, lead white and talc were white pigment. It is estimated that overlapping organic pigments on the lead white were used as the yellow pigment and carbon was the black pigment. Through the analysis of the particle status of the pigments, it was confirmed that different types of raw materials were used for the green pigment, and the crystal form was easily distinguishable. Also, the dark blue color and the light blue color differed from each other depending on the size and shape of the raw material particles. Yellow and purple colors were organic pigments which did not have a graininess. The yellow and purple colors were organic pigments free from the graininess, and the pigments of dark red pigments was found to be mixed with the orange color pigments and carbon particles.

Species and Characteristics of Particles for Traditional Red and Green Pigments used in Temples (사찰에 사용된 적색 및 녹색안료의 종류와 입자특성 분석)

  • The purpose of the present study is to determine the species of red and green pigments used on paintings of Korean temples and also to compare the two pigments according to the particle characteristics. The component analysis shows that the red pigment consists of cinnabar, hematite, and minium and the green pigment are composed of atacamite, celadonite, and malachite. The result suggests that mixture of various pigments were applied to the painting. When it comes to the particle characteristics, there are various hedral or anhedral shapes such as sharp, long, angular, and platy shapes even in the same cinnabar. In addition, the green pigment also shows a similar pattern with those of the red pigment. Up to now, an identification of minerals has been relied on examination of component and crystal shape. However, it is notable that using form related characteristics can be a better and useful method not only for categorization of pigments which are similar in terms of color and species but also specific index.

A Consideration of Pigments name on Ceremonial writing of Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting, BongJeongsa (봉정사 영산회괘불도 화기에 기록된 안료명에 대한 고찰)

  • This study interpreted the chemicals of the pigments and the coloring techniques employed on Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting through a nondestructive analysis method and a microscopic observation. Based on the interpretation, this study closely examined the chemical properties of the names of the coloring materials specified on the ceremonial writing of the Buddhist painting. It is estimated that lead white was used for the white pigments, orpiment and organic pigment for the yellow pigment, cinnabar/vermilion, minium, red ochre, and red dyes for the red pigments, malachite or atacamite for the green pigments, azurite and indigo for the blue pigments, and ink stick for the black pigments. The pigment names specified on the ceremonial writing are juhong, jungcheong, hayeop, whangdan, and whanggeum, and it was verified that juhong is cinnabar or vermilion, jungcheong is azurite, hayeop is malachite or atacamite, whangdan is minium, and whanggeum is a gold foil.

  • The characteristics and stability of pigments produced by Monascus anka in a jar fermenter were examined The pigments produced by the mold were fractionated into four pigments, i.e., extracellular red pigment(ERP) extracellular yellow Pigment(EYP), intracellular red pigment(IRP) and intracellular yellow pigment(IYP) by the solvent fractionation method. These pigments showed characteristic absorption spectrum indicating that they were composed of different components of pigments. Each of these four pigments separated from Monascus anka were stable under ultraviolet light, fluorescent light and in dark conditions, but their color was faded rapidly under sun light. They were also very stable against temperature below 8$0^{\circ}C$, above which temperature the stability of the Pigments was decreased rapidly. Among the eight organic acids tested, tartaric and citric acids were found to be detrimental against the Monascus anka Pigments. And Cu$^{2+}$ ion showed the most deleterious effect on the color change of the pigments.s.

  • The azo red pigments for textile printing containing amino-N-substituted benzamide derivatives as diazo components and 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoyl derivatives as coupling components were prepared. They have been printed on cotton, and the fastness, such as light, washing, dry cleaning, rubbing and heat stability was estimated. The new azo red pigments were valuable colorants in case of textile printing.
