This study was performed to investigate the effects of low-power Helium Neon Infra Red(He-Ne IR)laser irradiation and exercise on the regeneration of experimentally cut sciatic nerve in rats. The thrity Sprague-Dawley adult mail rats were assigned to the 6 groups : normal group(1), injured control groups(2), experimental groups(3). There was made artificial injured in the sciatic nerve of rats the each experimental laser group and exercise group were treated from 3 days after being injured for the 5 minutes(laser group), 10 minutes(exercise group), and 15 minutes(exercise and laser group) everyday during 2 weeks. There were measured the changes of amplitude of compound muscle action potential and histological change by the light microscopy on the sciatic nerve injured rats. The results obtained as follows : 1. In the control groups, the regeneration were slowly and slightlly progressed to compared with the experimental groups. Inflammation were much more observed, and fibrous adhesion was also observed around the sutured region of the cut sciatic nerve. 2. The amplitude of compound muscle action potential in the experimental groups were significantly increased to the injured control groups at 1 week(p<.05). The compound muscle action potential of the exercise and lased group was significantly decreased to be similar to normal group at 2 weeks(p<.05). 3. In histologic finding, in the experimental groups were observed the proliferation of the schwann cells, the infiltration of inflammatory cells and the extent of destruction at adjacent tissue were remarkably decreased on the 2 weeks. From these experimental results, it may be suggested that the laser and exercise were effected the heeling process of peripheral nerve injuried rats.
In a previous study, we have shown that mulberry leaves (Mori Folium) extract MFE) and its compounds have the antioxidant effect in human red blood cells. However, the possible effect of MFE and its compounds on improvement of blood flow were not reported. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of MFE and its compounds on improvement of blood flow in a rat model of topical ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$)-induced carotid artery damage. The $FeCl_3$ treatment seriously damaged the carotid artery: the walls of the artery, blood flow rate, blood vessel diameter, blood vessel area and blood flow amount. However, administration of MFE or its compound has ameliorated the blood flow and suppressed thrombus in blood vessels. Moreover, the concentrations of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol in the MET and its compound groups were remarkably reduced in comparison to the control group, and HDL cholesterol concentration was higher in the MET and its compound groups than in the control group. These results suggest that MFE and its compounds ameliorate the thrombosis against blood vessel damage.

The title compound of nicotinato lead(II) complex [Pb$(C_5H_4NCOO)_2$] has been optimized at B3LYP/LANL2DZ and HF/LANL2DZ levels of theory. The calculated results show that the lead(II) ion adopts 2- coordinate geometry, which is the same as its crystal structure and different from the 4-coordinate geometry of isonicotinato lead(II) complex. Atomic charge distributions indicate that during forming the title compound, each nicotinic acid ion transfers their negative charges to central lead(II) ion. The electronic spectra calculated by B3LYP/LANL2DZ level show that there exist two absorption bands, which have some red shifts compared with those of isonicotinato lead(II) complex and the electronic transitions are mainly derived from intraligand $\pi$ -$\pi$ transition and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. CIS-HF method is not suitable for the system studied here. The thermodynamic properties of the title compound at different temperatures have been calculated and corresponding relations between the properties and temperature have also been obtained. The second order optical nonlinearity was calculated, and the molecular hyperpolarizability was $1.147754{\times}10^{-30}$ esu.

Resveratrol, or its glycoside form piceid, is a dietary antioxidant polyphenolic compound, found in grapes and red wine that has been shown to have protective effects against cardiovascular disease. However, very low water solubility of the compound may limit its application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The amylosucrase (AMAS) of Alteromonas macleodii Deep ecotype was expressed in Escherichia coli and showed high glycosyltransferase activity to produce the glucosyl piceid when piceid was used as an acceptor. The conversion yield of piceid glucoside was 35.2%. Biotransformation using culture of the E. coli harboring the amas gene increased the yield up to 70.8%. The transfer product was purified by reverse phase chromatography and recycling preparative HPLC, and the molecular structure of the piceid glucoside was determined using NMR spectroscopy. The piceid glucoside was identified as glucosyl-${\alpha}$-($1{\rightarrow}4$)-piceid. The solubility of glucosyl piceid was 5.26 and 1.14 times higher than those of resveratrol and piceid, respectively. It is anticipated that dietary intake of this compound is more effective by enhancing the bioavailability of resveratrol in the human body because of its hydrophilic properties in the intestinal fluid.
Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) has been used as an important medicinal plant in the Orient for a long time. It has been claimed that ginseng has many beneficial bioactive effects on human health, such as antitumor, antistress, antiaging and enhancing immune functions. Red ginseng possibly have new ingredients converted during steaming and dry process from fresh ginseng. In this study, pharmacological efficacy and ingredient conversion of ginseng by 9 repetitive steaming and drying process were investigated measuring conversion efficiency of acidic-polysaccharide, phenolic compounds and inhibition of peroxide lipides. It was found that acidic-polysaccarides were increased by heat treatment. In addition, maltol of phenolic compounds, strong antioxidant, produced during the process of red ginseng by Maillard reaction. Acidic-polysaccarides and maltol were increased after the 1st and 3rd steaming and drying treatments, but they were decreased gradually after 5th, 7th, and 9th treatments. Antioxidant activity was increased as increasing treatment times of steaming and drying without significance. Effect of red ginseng extract on inhibition of peroxide was increased gradually until after the 7th treatment, but remarkably decreased after the 9th treatment.
Red ginseng possibly has new ingredients converted during steaming and dry process from fresh ginseng. Kujeungkupo method which means 9 repetitive steamings and dryings process was used for the production of red ginseng from 6-year old ginseng roots. Saponin was extracted from each red ginseng produced at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th during the steaming and drying treatment, and we analyzed saponin content with TLC. Minor saponins, such as ginsenoside-Rg3, -Rh2, compound K, and F2, increased as the process time of steaming and drying, but major saponins (ginsenoside-Rb1, -Rb2, -Rc, -Rd, -Re, -Rf, -Rg1) were decreased. Major saponins were yet observed almost at the 1st process, then degraded as the increasing time of steaming and drying process. Especially, ginsenoside-Re and -Rg were observed as considerable amount after the 1st treatment, but there were no trace of them after the 9th treatment. Ginsenoside-Rg1, -Rb2, and -Rb1 were also reduced remarkedly by 96.6%, 96%, and 92.3%, respectively. Minor saponins were increased significantly, especially for ginsenoside-Rg3 and ginsenoside-F2. These results suggest that Kujeungkupo method is the very useful method for the production of minor ginsenoside-Rg3 and -Rh2.
Harmful algal blooms (HABs or red tides), caused by uncontrolled proliferation of marine phytoplankton, impose a severe environmental problem and occasionally threaten even public health. We sequenced the genome of an EPS-producing marine bacterium Hahella chejuensis that produces a red pigment with the lytic activity against red-tide dinoflagellates at parts per billion level. H. chejuensis is the first sequenced species among algicidal bacteria as well as in the order Oceanospirillales. Sequence analysis indicated a distant relationship to the Pseudomonas group. Its 7.2-megabase genome encodes basic metabolic functions and a large number of proteins involved in regulation or transport. One of the prominent features of the H. chejuensis genome is a multitude of genes of functional equivalence or of possible foreign origin. A significant proportion (${\sim}23%$) of the genome appears to be of foreign origin, i.e. genomic islands, which encode genes for biosynthesis of exopolysaccharides, toxins, polyketides or non-ribosomal peptides, iron utilization, motility, type III protein secretion and pigment production. Molecular structure of the algicidal pigment was determined to be prodigiosin by LC-ESI-MS/MS and NMR analyses. The genomics-based research on H. chejuensis opens a new possibility for controlling algal blooms by exploiting biotic interactions in the natural environment and provides a model in marine bioprospecting through genome research.
