  • The status of waste generation and recycling in 32 countries in the European Union (EU), Japan, and the United States was investigated and summarized to encourage overseas market expansion for domestic urban mining industries. Among the 32 EU countries, Germany has the highest amount of material consumption and generates the largest quantity of waste. Minerals such as mine and soil wastes constitute the largest type of waste in the EU. With respect to waste treatment techniques, landfill and recycling are applied to 39% and 38% of the waste, respectively, implying the necessity to promote recycling. Japan's total waste generation declined recently to less than 400 million tons. The largest amount of waste is generated by the manufacturing industries. The proportion of total recycled waste is estimated to be slightly over 50%, but the proportions are greater than 90% for metal scrap and 60% for waste plastics. The amount of waste produced in the United States recently exceeded 265 million tons; 52.1% of the waste is landfilled, while only 25.1% is recycled. Therefore, the recycling industry has to be developed further.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to investigate the current state of the practice, examining the steps in the process recommended by various agencies and the Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association (ARRA)-namely mix design, structural design, structural capacity evaluation, and material characterization-in order to better understand the implications of hot in-place recycling (HIR). METHODS : In addition, the current practice of state departments of transportation (DOTs) is here reviewed with the purpose of learning from successful past experiences so as to forestall any difficulties that may emerge under similar circumstances. Also, HIR benefits, including reduced costs, improved construction processes, and environmental friendliness are presented, as well as advantages and disadvantages of HIR application. RESULTS : Most of the United States highway system is now deteriorating so that rehabilitation or reconstruction techniques are required for the most distressed roads, taking into account ways to increase the effectiveness of existing budgets. Several options are available in rehabilitating distressed roads, and the choice among these depends on many factors, including pavement distress condition, funding, and design life. Among these techniques, Hot In-Place Recycling (HIR) has emerged as a cost-effective treatment for deteriorated pavements, and has been proven an effective long-term strategy for pavement rehabilitation.

  • This paper reviews recent technologies for recycling poly (ethylene terephthalate) wastes. Wide application and non-biodegradability of the PET creates huge amounts of waste and disposal, leading to an environmental problem and economic loss. Chemical recycling can be a promising technology to deal with these problems by converting the waste into useful feedstock material for polyester production. Chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate are processes where the PET polymer chain is destructed by the impact of glycol (MEG) causing glycolysis, methanol causing methanolysis or water causing hydrolysis. After intensive purification polyester oligomers or the monomers MEG, dimethyl telephthalate (DMT) or purified terephthalic acid (PTA) are received which are re-used to produce polyester products.

  • This paper presents the utilization of waste concrete as vertical drain material. The materials used as vertical drain material were the waste concrete, obtained from the demolished apartments or concrete structure and sand. In this study, laboratory model test was performed to investigate settlement and bearing capacity between sand compaction pile and waste concrete compaction pile. The results of laboratory model test showed that the improvement efficiency of soft ground by waste concrete compaction pile was better than sand compaction pile.

  • The study on the recovery of Nylon from a radiator of End-of-Life Vehicle was conducted by using triboelectrostatic separation technique. For the effective separation of the sample(Nylon, PP glass), charge polarity and amount of each sample with various charging materials have been investigated by faraday cage. And then, charging material was selected as carrying out basic separation experiments with materials that can be possible to polarize samples. Finally, the continuos type triboelectrostatic separator was developed with selected charging material and the recovery possibility of the sample was confirmed as carrying out various separation experiments.

  • Uses of nickel have been widened in 20th century thanks to development of steel industry and munitions industry and also the demand from each uses on nickel has grown rapidly. In recent 5 years, the market price of nickel has been in bull market, so the security of supply became a big issue for each nickel user. However the entire material flow of nickel is not completed yet in Korea and not even in advanced countries, so recycling rate of nickel from raw materials to finished goods is not sufficient. Although statistical data and report systems about nickel are unprepared in domestic market, this study is carried out with limited market data for the completed material flow of nickel in domestic market and establishing recycling policies of nickel.

  • This study calculated the three indices of Korea's resource productivity (and raw material productivity), material circulation rate and decoupling factor to evaluate the sustainability of domestic economic activities and resource consumption and examine the extent of dematerialization. Korea's resource productivity improved 22% from 1.32 million KRW/ton in 2000 to 1.61 million KRW/ton in 2007, with the annual average growth of resource productivity during the period standing at 2.88%. Raw material inputs accounted for 73-76% of domestic material consumption (DMC); raw material productivity for the year 2007 was 2.11 million KRW/ton, growing 3% on annual average from 2000 through 2007. The wastes released are circulated into the economic system through recycling and energization. Korea's material circulation went up from 10.9% in 2000 to 15.6% in 2007, growing by an annual average of 5.3% during the period. The rate of change in year-on-year growth, however, was found to be on the gradual decrease. This study also showed that Korea's economic activities were decoupled with its resource consumption as the country heads toward dematerialization through sustainable resource management.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of stabilization disposal and recycling on incinerated paper mill sludge ash as cement additives. It was investigated chemical(pH, ICP, TGA XRD) and physical(PDA, SEM) characteristics of the incineration ash. And the pozzolanic characteristics of incineration ash was applied to cement as additive to increase the compressive strength. The results were that the pH characteristic of incineration ash was strong alkalinity, the content of silica and alumina as a pozzolanic material was 50.97%, and the average particle size was $5.03{\mu}m$ respectively. When the ash contents as cement additive were varied in 0~15%(wt) of cement weight to explore the effect of the compressive strength on the solidified cement mortar, the proper amount of the incineration ash substituted was about 5~l0%(wt). Therefore we found that using the incineration ash as cement additive obtains the recycling of waste material, the stabilization disposal, the reduction of waste disposal expense, and the protection of environmental problem, too.

  • Recovery of pure cobalt and nickel from diverse resources is important due to the increased demand for these metals. In order to get cobalt and nickel with high purity, separation of them from other metal ions is necessary. In this review, several methods to obtain pure cobalt or nickel solution, such as solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation were introduced and compared. For solvent extraction, the advantage and disadvantage of the separation process together with detailed process conditions were investigated.
